STi Shark Fin Antenna

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ps0d8539c4.jpg

Accessory Brochure. Styling Gallery.

This is now available. I don't know yet if it will be plug and play yet for the USDM BRZ. I would assume that it won't be.

I would also assume that it will be for the rest of the world market BRZ's with the JDM style antenna.

japanparts.com now has it listed at 190ish. Ouch. The STi Catalog has still yet top be updated with the new parts - Key Fob Cover, Privacy Cover, Control Arms, Shark Fin, Struts, etc..

This antenna is "plug and play". Meaning that the harness provided will plug into the OEM USDM BRZ harness. But there is no provision for sat radio. So if you get this you will lose sat radio.

Now, this. This, I can dig.

humanshield 05-29-2013 05:44 PM

that white car has every add on doesn't it? haha...love the antenna. need more full car pictures though.

Lonewolf 05-29-2013 06:25 PM

Do you have a straight-on profile shot of the antenna installed?

BlueSTaR 05-29-2013 06:26 PM

Interested.

Gunman 05-29-2013 07:56 PM

How does reception compare to the OEM antenna?

Yep, I've just about cleared out the STi, TRD and all other OEM catalogs. One of the locals named my car the "Mid-Atlantic Catalog Car".

More pics here - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...ight=thermobox

I'll snap some.

I don't really listen to the radio. But I did try it a couple times for when this questions arose. It seems the same as the normal antenna. The only "real" loss is the sat radio.

rupert 05-30-2013 04:47 PM

Do you think a sat radio antenna would fit within the fin section of the antenna?

I can't say. I cracked all three antenna open. They are all very, very different as to where the antenna post attaches to the base. I would need to actually disect the OEM BRZ antenna to see how the sat antenna is wired, positioned, etc..
The JDM Shark Fin is about rock solid on the interior with little to no room to place any new bits in.

Pity. It looks like a sweet antenna, but I will need something that will allow the antenna part of this bad boy.

Thanks for the update though!

Does this sit over the antenna base? Or does it require removal complete of the black pod? (Canadian BRZ, so we don't have the SatRadio antenna)

It replaces the existing black antenna. Meaning you will take the roof liner down and remove the existing roof antenna and then install this piece. It comes with a harness adapter to make it plug-n-play but provides no SAT Radio antenna.

Yes...I think I found your other post where you said this explicitly. That's a lot of work for just an antenna.....

It's all relative to what one would consider "work". It took me all of ten minutes to complete. I plan to have the car for years and years to come. I will want to be happy looking at the car daily and the factory big, black antenna is not aesthetically pleasing to my eyes in any shape, way or form.

Ten minutes to remove headliner?? I've never had to do that on any of my cars, but I always figured that it would require removing all the other interior panels....guess not?

It was only a minute or two to remove the headliner. I didn't take the whole thing down as much as reach in to do the work. If you have trim removal tools it makes this kind of work a knack.

It's really annoying they make a "BRZ" part and you lose some functionality being USDM. This is supposed to be a worldwide car yet they do this. I don't have XM and keeping stock unit but still it is just .........

I have a feeling that satellite radio is only popular in NorthAmerica...

rupert 06-07-2013 11:57 AM

That is correct. The satellites themselves are designed to provide NA coverage.

Welcome to Japanese cars.

For as long as I've known them, there is always some difference. Be it as subtle as a simple road flare in the passenger footwell to as extreme as different turbos, interiors, bumper beams, exhausts, rear wipers, etc..

As long as there are multiple markets selling the same cars, there will be a multitude of differences in them.

Please post more info on the Legacy antenna for those of us who don't listen to satellite radio and don't want a giant shark fin. Is it from a 2013? Does it plug into the antenna cable? Got a part number by chance? Thanks

Yep, 2013 color matched Leggy antenna. No, it serves no other purpose than a plug for the roof hole and isn't plug and play to any degree. The other Suby models mostly have their antenna in the rear windshield. I placed the OEM BRZ antenna between the roof and the interior head liner. Nope, I didn't keep the part number but any Suby parts counter should have it readily available with a Satin White Leggy Ltd VIN.

If you need a VIN or part number I can look into it for you.

That would be great. It doesn't need to be functional since I don't listen to the radio at all. I'd need the part number for black and a VIN to use.

PM inbound. Thanks!

Is there any write up of how to remove the OEM antenna with the OEM shark-fin style antenna? I searched for it but couldn't find anything. The shark-fine style antenna looks badass

Thanks,

Beyer Subaru 08-22-2013 12:50 PM

You will remove the headliner (I just pulled it back enough to get my hands in there.), Disconnect the harness and remove the mounting nut. Voila you're done! Install in the reverse. Pretty simple.

how big/small is this antenna compared to beat sonic? is it smaller, shorter? And did you say it was $190 so ~ $200?

It's smaller in every dimension, but that's because it won't fit on the BRZ Limited's antenna base unless you mod/remove it. Beat-Sonic's is designed for the large base, but it makes it look comically large as a result.

Are we both talking about the STI antenna? What mod would I have to do to make it fit? Can't believe there's enough of a difference between jdm and usdm that the shark fins don't fit.

thanks in advance(really waiting for this thank button to appear lol)

The antenna bases are different. JDM vehicles do not have satellite radio, and use the same base that the FRS has (premium BRZs as well). Just look it up and you'll see the immediate difference.

Your kinda right @DSOmegaX.

All three antenna are different -
USDM BRZ - The biggest of the bunch. Most all of the piggy back style shark fins won't work.

USDM FR-S - The middle of the bunch. Most all of the piggy back style shark fins will work. This is a fixed upright antenna.

JDM/World BRZ/86/GT86 - The smallest of the bunch. All of the piggy back style shark fins will work. The difference between these and the USDM FR-S is that it is mobile and can stand erect or laid as flat as possible. This is like the current antenna used on the WRX/STi and past model Impreza/Forester.

I have no clue. The harness for the BRZ looks kinda like a number 8. The only pic I have is from the first page -
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...psacf7d889.jpg

Beyer Subaru 01-09-2014 01:21 PM

You can see where the two wires go into the right side of the harness and the left terminal is empty. The left side is where the XM (Sat) wire should be.

Found this pic in the for sale area. Looks like the ends might match up. Thanks again.

Beyer Subaru 01-14-2014 10:49 AM

Yerp. That's it. So it "should" be plug-n-play. My reception kicks butt now and the NAV works as well with the Shark Fin.

Bongertz 01-16-2014 07:58 AM

So what's the verdict, is this better than the beat sonic fins? Hahahaha.
