DIY: APR Door Mirror Install

First things first, always inspect the products to make sure you have everything and it is in good condition before you start any install. We did and they look awesome!

I see a few people asking how to remove the mirror itself, so let’s start with that even though we started with the door card first.

Just below the mirror, you should see a black plastic cover, and we will pop that off to access the 3 bolts holding the mirror to the door. Fold the mirror all the way back to gain access to the plastic cover pry point.

See that little gap, yep, that is where we will start to pop the cover off.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0049-L.jpg

Once you get it cracked open, work your way down one side or the other.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0195-L.jpg

Once one side is fully popped off the clips, the other side should pop right out.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0196-L.jpg

Now with the mirror cover removed, lets jump back to the door card.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0176-L.jpg

To remove the door card, we will remove the 1 screw and 1 plastic clip that you can see here.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0162-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0177-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0158-L.jpg

Once these are out, you can pop the door card off. I started on the front inner portion as there is a place you can get your hand behind the door card. Use a bit of force to get the door card to pop off, but it should go without too much fuss.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0183-L.jpg

Once the door card is free from the clips, simply slide it up and you will now have access to the wiring harness and the door handle.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0184-L.jpg

The door handle comes off easily with 2 screws, just make sure to keep those along with the small black plastic retainer.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0186-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0188-L.jpg

Next, unplug the door's wiring harness. The driver side will have 2 plugs, the passenger side will have 1 plug. These gave a bit of resistance coming out, but just make sure you depress the release all the way and they should slide out.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0189-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0190-L.jpg

Passenger Side
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0046-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0047-L.jpg

Set the door cards and hardware off to the side, and move onto the wiring harness for the side mirror motors. This harness plug should slide right out.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0059-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0060-L.jpg

Take note that up behind the insulation, there is a small white plastic “guide” that holds the harness in place, make sure you remove the harness from the guide to avoid frustration and broken parts.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0058-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0061-L.jpg

The mirror is ready to come off! Grab your 12mm socket and remove the 3 bolts that hold the mirror to the door.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0197-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0198-L.jpg

With the mirror free, have a buddy help you fish the harness plug up through the door frame. The passenger side came out with ease, where our driver side took a bit more patience, but eventually came out without a problem.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0202-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0203-L.jpg

I wanted to re-use the rubber mirror grommet, so I had to cut a small portion of the rubber to get the harness plug through it. I re-installed the grommet on the new mirrors and they fit great.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0204-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0128-L.jpg

I like to pre-assemble the APR mirrors before they go on the car, but you do not have to, as it can be done later.

Use the included hardware to secure the new APR mirror to the door, making sure the grommet and mirror are fully seated and lined up with the door.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0205-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0134-L.jpg

Have your buddy help you adjust the mirrors, keeping all of the adjustment points finger tight, but loose enough to move freely.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0148-L.jpg

Once the desired position is found, tighten down the adjustments on the mirror and check for any movement or free play. The mirror should be secure with no movement.
Double check the mirror is in the correct position for yourself and adjust as needed. This is not something you really want to be doing while driving ;)

Time to put that door card back on!
Connect the door/window wire harnesses.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0191-L.jpg

Screw the door handle back onto the door card using the 2 screws and the plastic retainer.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0187-L.jpg

Slide the door card back on, make sure it is in the correct location and pop it back into place.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0154-L.jpg

Screw in the single screw and the plastic clip.
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0181-L.jpg
http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0180-L.jpg

You are all done! Well.. not quite, repeat the same process for the other side, and enjoy these beautiful, lightweight mirrors!

:laughabove: Teasing sure is fun though! Should not have to wait too much longer for an update, and it will be worth it. :)

Thanks,

That BRZ has really yellow eyes looks like it has liver disease.

Love the mirror though.

HAHA never thought about that before, in that light it does appear that way. In the right light, the yellow covers are just gorgeous.

Thanks! :)

How much weight does the mirror swap save? :D

NorseLegend 04-03-2013 10:11 PM

Hmm... Personally I like the stock side view mirrors more, though these actually look better than I thought but If I saw more pictures of the final install...

Lawnik 04-03-2013 10:41 PM

Nice write up. Very thorough, I could have really used it a couple weeks ago.

Yeah, still waiting on my Photographer to get me some proper pictures from his Photoshoot, but they should be up soon.

HAHA I actually rushed to get this up, as I saw a bunch of people asking how to take off the stock mirrors. Wish I had this up sooner though! :)

Thanks,
Rick

Man, I never like removing the door panel. It just doesn't go back on as tight as the first time.

That :(

The mirrors look great though :) If there is real weight to be saved there, I might look into it :)

RallySport Direct 04-11-2013 09:42 PM

Got the pictures up of the car on the first post with the APR mirrors, APR front lip and some other goodies installed. Thanks again guys! :)

Edit, car looks too good not to post it here as well!

Why did you replace the mirrors? These look off to me, maybe because they are so small.

BrianJC 04-12-2013 07:25 PM

Thanks for the DIY Rally. Do you know what the weight is for the OEM mirror?

GC GTS Aero Kit 04-14-2013 09:03 AM

I will try to weigh them when I go back out to the shop, but give me a few days on this :)

Nice! How do you like them so far? Took my a bit to get used to the size, but now that we have put some miles on them, I don't really notice it anymore, but I certainly notice how good they look on the car!

Thanks,
Rick

Rick yeah I like them the look especially....The only drama was adjusting the passenger mirror to be just right it was a fiddly process. Worth it now tho

I like the idea of a lighter and race inspired look achieved by the mirrors. But are there other mirrors out there for our FRS or BRZ with slightly larger mirrors? I really liked the size and looks of the Craft Square carbon mirrors (used in the Evasive FRS and TRD Griffon), but it is not compatible with our cars... In the TRD Griffon it seems they have a custom bracket to make it work, but man do those mirror look badass.

Not that I have seen, although I am sure there is something out there, or one coming out shortly that will have a larger mirror to it. I will keep my eye out for one :)

Thanks,
Rick

Does larger bumps on the road jar and throw off the mirror position?.. My GTR friend has Craft Squares and his, even after being fully tighten, would still move out of alignment.

TRD Griffon use Craft Square mirrors from Japan ($700-$800) uber expensive and I think they would be a custom version or prototype.

I've talked to Bulletproof and Evasive (both sells Craft Square mirrors). It seems both cars (TRD Griffon and Evasive FRS build) uses the universal mirror type, the problem is the screws doesn't seem to fit the FRS. So in the case of the TRD if you look carefully at the pics and video, they have a custom bracket that connects the mirror to the door (I've attached one below). Evasive on the other hand doesn't; I've emailed them, didn't fully understand their reply, but it seems they custom welded/mounted it on. Overall it seems you have to do some fancy handy work to make it work. I don't know the first thing about custom bodywork, so I didn't order them.. and yea, they are close to $900.

Huh, coming back to this thread now and looking at the updated pictures, these don't look to bad. Especially on yours GC GTS.

Not that I have seen, and I have driven it on some pretty rough roads. So far they seem to mount very securely. :)

Got mine! Great quality carbon fiber, clean edges, very nicely made base specific for the chassis, perfect fitment all around.

Was concern of the smaller size and less visibility, but turned out the convex mirror works well with enough to see cars in blind and backing up.

Overall, very impressed with the APR Performance GT mirrors!

Nice! And I was also worried about the visibility with the smaller mirrors, but once I got used to them I think they offer fantastic viewing for such a small mirror. APR did it right for sure

How has no one posted about how much weight this actually frees up?

I didn't get a chance to weight it, my guess would be only a few pounds per side.

Thanks! And I will measure the weight of the stock mirrors and these as well, I have been super busy recently, but it is on my list of things to do! :)

Thanks again,
Rick

digital_assassin 11-24-2013 01:00 AM

Thanks for the write up. It was a pretty self explanatory install but I had to go here for some reassurance on getting that damned plug out on the drivers side. Tried, tried, tried some more, and tried some more, searched for a DIY, continued trying, and trying and then finally it came out. Couldn't even tell you what angle or spot it had to be in but it was a mini triumph when that bastard finally slipped through the hole.

jm1681 11-24-2013 08:57 AM

...so.....weights?

Anyone?

I have a note here to weigh the stock mirrors as well as the APR's. It might be a few weeks, but I will post up here what I find. I see a few people asking about it. :)

Thanks,

So, I noticed you reconnected the power window harness. Does that mean these mirrors are adjustable via the power mirror controls?

They are not powered, so the factory mirror adjustments would not work with these mirrors. I do see the picture in question, and that was the only picture I had with all of the harnesses together, but you will not be able to hook them back up with the aftermarket mirrors. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks,
Rick
