Going back to school

So I graduated a few years ago (2010) in Marketing/Advertising. I have been working for a few years now and finally decided it is not for me. I emailed the admin offices today, and am looking to go back to school. I am going to see if I can get into the Animation program at BYU here in Utah. UVU and BYU have a couple of the best Animation programs in the country, so I will have to work my butt off to get in. Kind of a strange feeling to be going back to school and not be looking at an MBA too, but I am all about working in what you love, not what makes you the most cash.

Off topic, and random, but I thought I would share.

M-17 04-02-2013 12:55 PM

Anyway, @Tanuki just curious if you didn't like marketing and advertising? I ask this because this is one part of the field of business I'd like to add.

I suppose that I like it enough, but I don't exactly love it? From the places I have been so far, there is a lot of work, and very little recognition. I think one part that bugs me the most, is that you are driving sales, but the sales guys make more money than marketing. When you are in a company where your salesmen are basically just closers, I think that is wrong. If they are filling their own pipelines, I would feel differently.

Job is pretty fun, but I think the earning potential really isn't there for how much you have to put into it.

Seems like the company just doesn't recognize you. :(

New company? Or talk with a manager?

N8marsh 04-02-2013 01:04 PM

I'm back in school for engineering after graduating a few years ago with a BS degree in Communications. (See what i did there?)

Best decision I have ever made; it's giving me a chance to learn about things that fascinate me and I will make actual money when I'm done.

Good to go back, just make sure it's a justifiable expense.

I mean don't get me wrong, I make decent money and I get to travel, but if you look globally, the marketing guys almost always make less than the sales guys, unless you are a director etc.

Maybe a new company would make a difference, but I love art, and I would like to be a concept artist for Disney ;) That would be worth my time in going back to school I think.

IntotheOcean 04-02-2013 01:11 PM

I know someone who's looking for a job -on long island- in Marketing/Advertising but can not find one. Is it hard to get into? Or is she just being picky, Also they only interned for 4months too, not sure if this changes anything.
I ask out of curiosity and well, its been a year already and I don't want her at my job anymore -haha-

IntotheOcean 04-02-2013 01:14 PM

Ps: I was also looking into doing animation myself...I'm a bit worried since I'm more of a hands on person....rather than technical..Not sure if that makes sense. My community college offers a course I am going to take once I figure out my job situation.
Have you done it before? I really hope I enjoy it once given the chance.

I've been thinking about going back to school for Engineering after graduating with a BA in Psychology. Just don't want to be taking classes and doing hw again...

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Overtime some of my friends started to wise up about that. It also depends on the firm and product that's being pushed as well.

I admire marketing and advertising because you get to work on something different most of the time. Instead right now I'm just doing the same ol' thing in my office. Then my friends, in their eyes, are the ones that are jealous of me.

Good luck getting in BYU or UVA.

You're definitely right. Sales guys always make the big bucks. Because they're good talkers.

But if you find what you really love to do back in school go for it. You may even combine both of your degrees and present yourself in a creative way for the newer company.

My uncle got a special degree.. Psychological business marketing. Lol

Needless to say he's a CEO of a company and is now pursuing a political job in the county.

From my point of view... you have three options. Go back to school, talk with your GM about your job or look elsewhere.

Also depending on your age going back to school might be an expensive change.

Archetype 04-02-2013 01:16 PM

Do what makes you happy sir. I just can't wrap my head around the idea of doing something that you don't love, so that someone else makes money on your hard work and ideas for 50 years just to one day stop....or do die(whichever comes first).
I graduated from a Federal Service Academy, I drive container ships for a living, make 6 figures and work 5 months a year BUT I hate it. So In July I'm going back to school for high performance and auto racing. I've never been more excited about my future....live the dream man.

Yeah my cousin did this in one shot. She got an instant job offer right off the bat as soon as she graduated. I think her job has to do with something in transportations.

Same here. That's why I'm doing a class here or 2 classes there.

I would imagine it shouldn't take you too long since you've got all of your general ed stuff done.

I've taken a couple animation courses over my college career, its lots of fun to see a project come to life, but also, a TON of work.

If you get into using a program like Maya, be prepared for a mind f***, photoshop and illustrator look like child's play things in comparison. Very very powerful, but also very hard to navigate when you're first getting used to it. But its also very rewarding when everything comes together though.

Good luck to you sir :happy0180:

My final project after a term of Maya....a remake of a scene from the movie iRobot.

I think I've heard that you can do this before, but it still blows my mind it can be done that way. I wonder how this sounds?

Master of Science in Busineess, Administration, Graphic Design, Marketing & Advertising, and Photography.

Someday.... someday.

I think she is being picky. A lot of people think that these ad jobs are just like on mad men or something. It is about paying your dues and lots of hard work for no recognition. Eventually maybe you can manage those people. There are too many people that want big agency jobs and dont really understand that agencies don't pay well and are super competitive. There are jobs out there, you just have to be willing to start at the very bottom and work your way up.

dem00n 04-02-2013 02:46 PM

Good luck man.

I think we're approaching an era where run of the mill people are well versed in 2 or 3 more professions with degrees.

Its more common then ever to see people age 60+ going to college...

I have not. I have a lot of friends at some of the big studios, and I have done a lot of freelance work, but never an actual job in animation.

Thank you. I graduated from BYU originally, so I am hoping they let me come back. If not, I would be happy in sales as well, just not as happy.

I agree with this as well. I am just hoping that a double major is worth more to me than a masters.

I think even deeper, we are entering a new stage where the privileged help the privileged and very few from the lower and middle classes are able to supersede their circumstances.

IntotheOcean 04-02-2013 06:31 PM

Lower and middle class can make it out they just gotta work harder than the rich kids ;)

Well that is my hope at least. Sadly $ is freedom still.

Do you have any of your work online? I am nowhere near where I want to be with this all, but I am curious to see where others are starting from as well.

0 experience with anything on the computer. Maybe a little basic photoshop but that's it
So far the only thing I have to show is my demon baby and some other basic stuff I did.
I'm still pretty new to working with clay. Man... I miss making art, here's a link to some stuff

Some cool stuff there. Lots of potential

Here is a quick one I did last night for a guy. He wanted something like the one I had done a year ago on the left, but I kind of went overboard and characterized it.

Rayme 04-10-2013 09:11 AM

If you think of going back to studies, if you have the means I would say just go ahead and do it. I'm almost 31 and all the people I know that went straight to college / university after their high school eventually came back for something else / end up not working in their first choice.

I've been thinking for a looong time to go back to school for the 4th time in my life. I'm currently a Graphic Designer and I'm tired of it, I get bored easily of anything that doesn't change in my life..my long list of previous car/girlfriends are a testament of that, LOL.

Oh yea, I'd like to go as a car mechanic, been thinking about it for over 10 years now and never really got to do it...might be time now...the pay sucks but there's always going to be work if you are good.

Tanuki 04-10-2013 09:48 AM

I ended up enrolling in a couple of classes here at BYU as well as a schoolism class. I think I will end up going through the full curriculum at schoolism though and gain the skills I need to work in the illustration world.

UnOvertime 04-10-2013 11:45 AM

I started towards a degree in accounting then switched to finance, but then it hit me one day that I cannot do any of this for the rest of my life. Changed my major to history which I got panned for because "what did I want to become, a teacher?" Now I work in a museum which I love and I couldn't picture doing anything else. You have to do what makes you happy even when earning potential is not high.

Now finishing my thesis for my Master's is a whole other story...

WingsofWar 04-10-2013 12:10 PM

@Tanuki If your goal is to be a concept artist for Disney you are going to have to be a pretty good digital painter and work incredibly long hours.

My sister is currently a concept artist for Disney, she did the most recent art for the 7th princess inauguration and art for the new Attractions for the theme park. If you want I can ask her to chat with you so you can ask her questions about the industry.

Her and her husband did art/graphics/3d/animation/lighting/effects for; Harry Potter, 2012, Fantastic Four 1&2, IronMan 2&3, Spiderman 3, Final Destination 5, Hotel Transylvania, Battlestar Galactica, Battle Los Angeles, & Prometheus. Just an idea of the projects they work on.

I would absolutely love that. Time is something I have, and I am more than willing to put the hours in to make this a reality. I just wish I had made this decision years ago. Let me know if she is willing to talk to me, I would really appreciate that. Very nice gesture.

I see what you did there heh. I too earned a Bachelor's in Communications in college the first time around. Post graduation after 3 years of waiting tables and then 5 years working at a bank culminating with me being a commercial loan analyst hating life in a cube 8 hours a day M-F I had enough. I went back to school for Nursing and couldn't be happier with my decision. I've been an RN for a little over 2 years and really feel that I'm lucky to have a job where my work doesn't feel like a chore.
