Oil change questions

Does Subaru offer free oil changes?

Would I be able to get it changed if its under 7500 miles? Im at 6500

Should I get it changed at a non-dealer shop?

What type of oil should be used?

LeeMaster 03-30-2013 07:44 PM

Do your own oil change, it's ALWAYS free(Call your dealer if they offer free oil change). Yes you should change your break-in oil. What does the owners manual say about oil you could use for your car? the answer is on your oil cap and 5w-30

1. Not necessarily, but ask your dealer. If at all, just the first change.
2. You can get your oil changed anytime you want.
3. I would get the first oil change at the dealer, then from whomever you trust.
4. Type: Check owners manual: (synthetic, SAE 0W-20) The engine oil weight is also stated on the yellow engine oil fill cap)

You will get further advice, I am sure. Different preferences from different people depending on how they drive their cars, racing or otherwise. Some will only change the oil themselves because they don't trust anyone else or it is cheaper or is a hobby. Others only go to a dealer. Your call if you already have your BRZ.

I forgot to mention I will have to get it done at a different dealership from the one I bought the car from... I was told I can get it serviced at any Subaru

Id have to wait until next weekend where I can do it at my friend's house... Kind of hard when you live at an apartment complex with no jack or stands

For question 1, doesn't every BRZ sold in the US come with the same free services? Ive seen some people here say they get 3 free oil changes so why would that change from person to person?

You should already know this. If you bought the car new from a dealer, it would be in the sales agreement. Different dealers offer different selling agreements. Subaru may have different deals in different countries. In the USA, where I purchase my BRZ, the dealer gave me the first oil change at no charge. It was just Good Will on their part.

Some dealership offer free oil changes, others offer a service purchase agreement, and others dont give a crap about you and overcharge.

The three free oil change you mentioned is from Scion, the FRS guys get the free oil change, the Subaru people do not unless it was written when you signed the papers.

Didn't know the BRZ doesnt come with any free oil changes

Every BRZ in the U.S. is supposed to come standard with the new Subaru Maintenance Plan. Base (included in all BRZ's) plan is two (2) years full maintennce or 24,000 Miles, which ever comes first. If the Dealer did not give it to you then you need to ask them about it. If you get no response from the dealer, then I would contact your "regional" Subaru of America office to get the matter straighted out. There may be a few dealers hoping to not get revenues from future Scheduled Service plans that they can put aside at commencement of the sale (F&I guy) renegotiate them to lesser plans (like one. I doubt very seriouslyf

So far, I haven't seen any reference to this "New Subaru Maintenance Plan" in any of the documentation that I have received with my vehicle that I bought last summer. Maybe it is very new, but stay tuned, I will be taking my car in for service tomorrow, Monday , 1 April, and will ask my dealer what this may be all about..

I got 2 years of free oil changes for free with my BRZ. That should be standard.

slowbrz 03-31-2013 10:57 PM

I'll actually be doing the oil change myself.

I have a question though: Does Autozone sell a compatible oil filter or do I have to buy a Subaru OEM one?

I have a question though: What aftermarket oil filter should I get? K&N or Mobil?

Pick up an OEM filter from the Subaru dealer.

What's the difference other than price? I dont mind paying an bit extra if it saves me a 20 minute drive

The dealership I purchased from said that ALL new subaru's get 2 years/24000 miles of oil changes which they said averages 2/year. That's just what my dealership says...thought it was standard across the board...but maybe not....

This dealership also said I should get the first change at 3750 miles...Anybody else hear about that?

andrew20195 04-06-2013 11:48 AM

Subaru dealers in the Sunbelt region definitely offer the complementary 2/24 scheduled maintenance. It does require the sales/finance departments to set it up properly, so you may want to inquire at your dealer. As someone above said, if your dealer doesn't know or is unhelpful, call the SOA customer relations department and ask them about it.

Most Subarus recommend the first oil service at 3750, and at every 7500 miles thereafter. I'm having trouble finding the maintenance schedule online and I left my owner's manual at home. Sounds reasonable to me.

That's your dealership's service policy. The one I bought from offered a similar deal, but they're in another state so it's not of much use to me.

My local dealer suggested I follow the service schedule published by Subaru (starting at 7500) but said if I wanted to do it earlier, 3000 would be fine. They actually suggested I don't do it too soon.

I ended up doing mine yesterday at 3600. First time I did an oil change with 0W20 oil. damn I was not ready for how fast that stuff drains. Stuff ended up all over the place as my drain pan's funnel filled up faster than the air could escape the container! At least now I have a Fumoto valve with the hose extension. Next one should be much more manageable.
