Buying FRS or BRZ for 1K (maybe 2K) below MSRP?

I, myself, and 2 other friends want to buy a FRS. We are committed to the car. It's the price we hate. MSRP sucks.

What are the odds that all three of us can get a SCION dealer to sell us the FRS for 1K (maybe 2K) under the MSRP if we all decide to make the purchase on the same day at the end of March?

TL;DR Three people go into a Scion at the same time on March 31st and buys each themselves an FRS at 2K below MSRP. Will it work?

GT 86 Brah 03-27-2013 07:49 PM

their no haggle thing... probably low chance

Captain_Awesome_Pants 03-27-2013 07:54 PM

Chances on the "selling like hotcakes FR-S"? Very unlikely or an absolute impossibility without mitigating circumstances. If it had been sitting on the lot for more than a year? More likely.

wbradley 03-27-2013 07:58 PM

The markup isn't very big to begin with. And you will never be satisfied whatever you get.

Even better, negotiate a 3 car deal and then just take one to start.

On the other hand, just buy a Genesis coupe.

LOL. Now you're showing your age. Today the dealership makes much more if you put the minimum down and let them handle financing.

BlaineWasHere 03-27-2013 08:06 PM

Buying three cars at once won't help considering they'll be able to sell all three cars regardless.

It's not like you're walking in and trying to buy 3 Carollas or something that might sit on the lot.

Sarcasm is often missed on the web.

strat61caster 03-27-2013 08:12 PM

Dreg through the "how much did you pay" threads, some guys are claiming they paid <$24k, PM them how.

wbradley 03-27-2013 08:15 PM

Buy a used one

ZmZMWagon 03-27-2013 08:15 PM

1. Talk to Military Recruiter
2. Get DEP paper
3. Take to Dealer
4. Get $1000 off MSRP
5. Enjoy your car before boot camp
6. ??
7. Profit

jskurucz 03-27-2013 08:16 PM

Drive to Ohio and buy mine. Take over payments around 20k left to owe.

rxpx2012 03-27-2013 08:33 PM

I got mine in Ohio and it was less then $24,000. They are sitting around at a lot of the lots around here.

In a similar fashion.

1. Go to college
2. Graduate
3. Use transcript to receive $1000 off MSRP.

Also, car is a steal at the current price. It's not a Dodge Neon so don't expect it to sell for such. Or buy one used. :iono:

StOpNG0x 03-27-2013 08:47 PM

That would be one happy sales person.

My parents are with USAA and they were able to check different dealerships for discounts and I got mine for about $1,240 cheaper than MSRP.

I thought Scion reduced both military and college graduate amounts to $500.00?:iono:

I don't think that's going to work with SCION Dealers.
you may get freebies like accessories, cups hats keychain and stuffs.

raphy 03-27-2013 09:20 PM

it wont happen, I work for Toyota and there isn't more than 2k mark up in the entire car in-fact its less than 2k

Don_SA 03-27-2013 09:31 PM

I don't think there is $2,000 in markup in the car to begin with. If you want a discount why not get a BRZ?

tennisfreak 03-27-2013 09:58 PM

Damn! I will likely be getting mine Saturday and was hoping for that college discount. I read fine print and you have to have graduated in the last 2 years. I graduated in 05.

MykeH78 03-27-2013 11:12 PM

How to get $2k off your FRS.
Step 1: go to Subaru Dealership
Step 2: Get a BRZ
Step 3 Haggle on Price
Step 4 Get dealer to take $2K off
Step 5 Buy Scion FRS Badge Set and swap them
Step 6 Still pay over $1k more for the Subaru

This concludes our tutorial on how to save $2k on an FRS.
Thank you for coming, have a nice day, and happy hunting.
LOL

kthxbai 03-27-2013 11:19 PM

1. If you are in the mood to haggle, shop for a used frs or try haggling the price of a new brz.
2. If you are looking buy multiple cars target a high volume dealership due to the nature of allotments, but you may find it easier to locate multiple frs versus brz which takes you back to point one.
3. If you can use your trade to offset the frs sticker price, then there is haggling room there.

...just my two cents.

fistpoint 03-28-2013 12:34 AM

It can't hurt to TRY. But you three need to be prepared.

86BRZ 03-28-2013 12:49 AM

What is the chance to have 3 cars in stock there with all the options and color you 3 all like?
If yes, what is the chance this dealer willing to cut deal?

Let me suggest this: you 3 split up and compete to see who buy with the most discount, I think this will have some potential for good thing to happen...

campy 03-28-2013 01:09 AM

Scion has fixed pricing, so you probably won't get a discount.
Subaru still isn't keeping up with demand, so you probably won't get a discount.

TBH if you try to haggle they'll probably just say no and sell it to the next guy who walks in. Your plan would work on any other car except for an frs/brz.

jarviz 03-28-2013 09:16 AM

why don't you just go and try it. there's nothing to lose... even though all of us here already know it's not gonna happen at toyota.

Rustyspoon 03-28-2013 10:41 AM

I got a good deal by playing two dealerships against each other. Went to first one, found a well informed salesman and test drove. Went to second dealer and tried to haggle. They gave me a price that I thought was high. Went back to first dealer, got it for 600 over invoice. Other dealer called me and offered me at invoice but I did not like thier attitude.

TommyFive 03-28-2013 10:50 AM

If you think the price sucks and you're conspiring with friends to try to save $2k, you probably shouldn't be buying the car. $2k really doesn't add much to your payments in the end, so if the extra $40 or so a month breaks your budget you may want to save up a little longer before committing to a new sports car.

m.wood0213 03-28-2013 02:04 PM

expect to pay a mark up because of the demand for the car i had to pay a $2500 premium above sticker price.

More than likely you will not be able to negotiate $1-2k below msrp on a FRS and when it comes to a BRZ (yeah right). The Subaru dealerships (around 4) I have called or visited purposely mark up their BRZ's $6-8k. Next to that you have tax on each car + registration + potential extended warranties + protection options you may want to include. Once you add it all together you will really not like the final price.

I just experienced this as I purchased my FRS last week. However, I was expecting it so there was not a huge surprise when I saw the final total.

My only advice to you is if you really don't like the price but you still REALLY want the car you should finance it on a 7+ year term. Yes, it seems long but monthly payments will be far less AND you still have the ability to pay it off sooner if you so choose (or God forbid, sell it).

If you have any questions I would be happy to help (not that I am a guru) but I did just experience the whole new car purchase for the first time.

EBMCS03 04-13-2013 06:50 PM

So what happened? were you able to get a discount?

Well 40 bucks also isn't nothing either. I mean which would you prefer to pay? 360$ a month or 400$? or 310$ a month or 350$?

Not to mention an extra 40$ over a 60 month period is 2400$ extra without any interest.

But I think the moral of the story is more along the lines that this car is going to be difficult to haggle price with. If you really want it, be prepared to pay MSRP, or be okay with wasting a couple hours and walking out with nothing.

goodluck!

I 100% agree. $40 a month is a lot of money. However, you probably shouldn't be looking at this car if $40 every month makes or breaks your means of living comfortably.

hsayani 04-13-2013 10:15 PM

Yes it'll work for the BRZ. No it won't work for the FR-S.

this is true unfortunately! they receive a "kickback"
fron the various financial institutions. there is ONE possibility
and that is IF the dealer is "stuck" with a "'slow" moving vehicle
at the end of the month, and cash MAY be a negotiating tool to move a unit for allocation purposes...just sayin'

true! your only chance is if you can negotiate an "overallowance"
on your trade for the frs.some dealers will allow this if they believe you are serious and will buy the car right away! it's worth a shot! all they can say is no,and attempt to "low ball" you on the trade instead.

My sugestion is to buy used. Even better, buy from an individual. There are people who have bought the car and changed their mind. I have 3 sitting on lots around here that have less than 8k miles on them (one has 2k) and they stickers on them are ~$25k. Those are not part of Scion's no haggle policy and you can dig in and try and shoot for a 'deal' on them.
