This might just be mines but...
Does anyone else feel an excessive shaking/vibrating through the shift knob? It seems to always be doing that no matter if i am at idle or driving, it is always vibrating haha
I drive a FR-S Just not sure if this is normal Thanks, Tim |

Funny, I always smile because of how little it vibrates...
Boxer = smooth sailing, but it's all relative. BTW it vibrates because it is directly attached to the engine, which has thousands of explosions occurring every second. You may not feel it on other cars because they were developed with comfort in mind (don't let the soccer mom worry about the vibrations from the 300 hp V6 under there!) but sports cars generally don't concern themselves with such trivial things. :burnrubber: tl;dr if something was vibrating in a bad way you'd hear it or feel it somewhere other than the gear shift lever. |
Mine has minimal vibration. Perhaps the heavier than stock shifter knob keeps it more stationary.

Thanks everyone!

Would a shifter bushing help that at all? I got one of the 10 free ones from Kart Boy but won't be able to install for awhile because I'm out of town. Supposedly it makes a huge difference in the feel of the shifts.

I'd say it definitely has a lot more vibration than my old Civic Si... but I assumed it had to do with the RWD transmission.

It's normal. I'd probably be shaking/vibrating too if I was driving with mines in the car

I do not get shifter shake from the motor in my MR-S but it is a cable shifter link to the transaxle much like most FWD cars. |
I love it. Another reason I hate flappy paddles. One less sensory input.

Tim, my friend, who drives a Mazda 3, said the exact same when I let him take it for a spin. What were you driving before the FR-S?

If you are used to FWD cars where the gear stick doesnt physically bolt to the transmission it will feal like there is a lot of vibration. Compared to my 74 Celica, on the other hand, my 86 feels smooth and vibration free. It really depends what you are used to. |

I've got his rear shifter stay and Whiteline's insert, but I couldn't tell the difference in vibration so YMMV. |

Clearly it more accurately defines progress and the goal of all car companies efforts to tame noise, vibration and harshness(NVH). Still love the car. |
The shifter is attached directly to the transmission housing.
The transmission is connected to the drive shaft, the drive shaft connected to the differential, differential connected to the axle, the axle bone connected to the wheel bone, the wheel bone connected to the tire bone. The tire bone connected to the world dude. Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones... Surface and traction imperfections are going to transmit through the assembly and make the shifter jump around. Been that way since transmissions first sprouted a knob. If it didn't I'd be suspicious. Front wheel drive with cable shifters are mounted to the body and artificially removed from any feeling for the road. With the FR-S/BRZ you're connected with El Mundo. |

Never really noticed it in either of my MR2's (although I'm sure they probably do it), but I definitely notice it in my 86.
I think that's got more to do with the fact that it's my first brand new car and I'm paranoid there could be something wrong with it, so i'm noticing every tiny little thing. It's normal though. |

Definitely vibrates more than my old Z32, but not excessively enough to make me worry.
