Oil Filters for BRZ and 86
 
Hi guys, just looking for a filter for the 86 and found that they are a Ryco Z79A ... had one in the garage already .... yeah for my dad's Getz ... it appears they go on a great many cars, $8.99 at Supercheap..

The Valvolene model is VO5 just think of the old girls hair shampoo !!!

Why pay the genuine money ... Ryco are fine... not sure about the Valvolene or cheap ones but just a thought .. I will change mine after every race weekend so it's not an issue.. I am going to run the Royal Purple Race
XPR 5-30 on the weekend.. they do a 0-20 as well if anyone is after a factory spec viscosity..

Hope that helps ... save a few bucks and do an interim oil change yourself.. such cheap insurance for the twins !

I know it's only been a week or so, but are you able to give an impression of it yet? Or does anyone else know the quality of Ryco filters these days?
i.e. any story's about the filter medium collapsing or the rolled seam leaking?
At the price it sounds stupid to go past.

Did you monitor oil pressures? If so, what pressures did you get with 5W-30?

I'm perfectly happy with paying $14.80 from the Subaru parts department, thanks. Or $16 even if they decide to charge me for the crush gasket-- which I'm going to need to go there to get anyway, as Autobarn, Supercheap etc. never have 'em.

EDIT; Worth noting that for racing use, hell, why not-- six bucks saved is six more bucks for 105, six more bucks for tyres, six more bucks for extinguisher checks. It might sound like I'm negating that but it's very important to save what you can!

(( And I use Z79As on my Honda. Never let me down yet! ))

Your right Nezz, in the scheme of things it's not a lot.. just put it up as an option.. and yes everything adds up on the race car but then I am at 900k's and it's getting the third lot of oil and filter.. all cheap insurance :)

For me the purchase of a 6 pack beats frequent trips to the Toyota/Subi dealers..

I'll be sticking with the genuine subaru tokyo roki filters. Not worth saving $8 on something as vital as that!
And I think the ryco's are made in china now as well!

Not commonly known but when your under high revs the vast majority of oil bypasses the filter !!

OK, I got the good oil as it were from Ryco engineers today at the Auto Expo..

They manufacture their filters based on OEM specs.. they have a thick 5mm base plate unlike some cheaper ones.. The filter medium is as good or exceeds that for Toyota and Subaru. Oil will flow through a spring valve when you first start up and the oil is cold. As it warms 100% goes through the filter as the rate is massive.

People who say they have a high flow rate filter are giving you a filter with bigger microns in the filter medium which mean in short that bigger particles that would normally be trapped can go for a second round.

The filter importantly has a rubber internal sealing ring which for the FA 20 motor with an inverted filter means that when you turn off only the oil in the core drains back into the sump.. the rubber ring retains oil in the body so that you prime quicker on start up. Makes sense

As for magnets on the outside.. a waste of time and a gimmick as the filter gets anything trapped before it gets to the outer wall as from there it is back to sump.

I hope I got all that right. For me I am not wasting any money on Toyota or Subaru marked filters.. as for the Jap branded HKS etc.. a bigger waste on colourful filters with magnet gimmicks.. That's just me.. you decide what works.

PS. I am not sponsored by RYCO ... I buy my filters from wherever I can get them.. this is not an add for those left wondering

Exactly you are right 86 specially comes with oil filters "Ryco Z79A". Now you should spend the saving of $8 on some other great accessory for your 86. Best of luck.

I only started the thread because some were paying $32 for a Toyota part.. so a little more than 8 bucks for those people.. dealers and parts people have a tendency to scare you into OEM .. happens with a great many parts but not all.. I just thought it was worth mentioning ..

I can afford the $32 but why ?? again just my thoughts

Can you do us a favour and cut open one of your old ryco filters to show the filter media and end plates?

Interested to know if they use metal end caps on the filtration media like the good genuine filters & K&N's or cardboard/plastic end caps like a lot of the cheaper filters.

I personally wouldn't put anything but a genuine filter on any engine that's still under warranty. On my other built engines I use K&N. I do use the occasional ryco filters temporarily when doing a quick oil flush before putting on a genuine filter.

From what I can see the build is identical to that shown on the video. Steel each end of the Filter paper, 4-5mm thick base plate so quite strong.. I will take a few pics in the next day or so.. again not a die in the ditch thing but they seem so very similar..

Stick with the OE filter or go the whole hog on a TRD, K&N or Cusco performance filter. . Don't waste your time with ryco especially if you're taking it on the track. You're buying expensive oil & skimping on the filter? Whats the point in that? Penny wise, pound foolish??
If you must go aftermarket to save a few $ then look at WIX, they're far superior to anything else for the money.

More $$ = better ... ok I got it now :)

... except the performance filters have bigger holes in the filter for flow... let's spend $40+ on a filter to be sure ?? I am not getting the logic ... in any case I would rather spend the $$ on a 5k oil change than spend more on a less frequent change..

Got to love differing view points.. none of which are without value.. again just my thought .. my car has just on 900km on it of which 3 hrs are 5500 - 7500rpm at Bathurst.. with a Ryco .. and it will get a new one tomorrow to do another three hours of racing.. so if you do take it to the track I can vouch that it will not blow up your engine.. I already tried :)

Yes in some cases, you get what you pay for. For the measly sum of $18 you could be using a genuine Subaru filter. I know what I'd be using for piece of mind.
Do you know what the by-pass pressure of the Ryco is? Z79X also fits lots of early Mazda/Ford so it's not spec'd specifically for the FA20 engine it's just a generic filter.

Yep .. the bypass only works when it's cold. Other than that it filters I think they told me 200 liters a minute when warm / hot.. I went through all of the internals with the Ryco people the other day and I have to say that I am comfortable that it is every bit as good as OEM .. there is no way I would trust it otherwise .. brand new engine and races to get points .. got to finish every race..

To be honest I am more worried about the G's and oil pick up problems on the fast left hand turn one .. with more speed and semi slicks I am not certain... I will have my eyes glued to the pressure gauge as well as my apex !!

Thanks for the questions as they are very relevant.. I have to say that the Bathurst run was not really the place to test as attention to pressures is a distraction from Apex's and walls :) I will however start building information from this Friday .. I will use some new 5w 30 and hope to post some info... I do have concerns about the relocation of sender units due to the HKS plate ... I am wondering if it will vary the readings. It shouldn't but I will start to note some of this in relation to revs on a hot engine.

I may vary things dependent on the temp.. ie freezing days at Goulburn although under load with proper warming I am not sure if it will matter.. I am open to views on this.. happy to learn something new..

I'm getting what feels like fuel starvation in fast left hand turns like 110 degree corners right after a sweeper into a straight, never when on a full tank, but consistently at 3/4 tank. Wondering if anyone else is having this. I dont recall it being NA, so I will be asking folks who track that go FI, and specifically Vortech FI, cant replicate on the street, just not the same traction as rcomps on a track. LMK. I have this on two different tracks.

Thanks again for feedback. I don't want to pressure you (pun intended), any feedback you want to give is appreciated. I ran a fully stock 86 around the creek (except for 5W40 penrite). I am a total amateur. I was v. nervous about turn 1 and slowed a lot. The instructor eventually said to keep in 5th gear around the corner. V.thrilling fun.

Some clarification.
is the HKS plate for the HKS oil cooler kit?
is the sender the pressure gauge sensor?
If relocated, Where is it now?

I am starting to plan oil pressure gauge and oil cooler. This info is helpful.

Due to your suggestion of 235 wide tyre is preferred, I am going for rims 17x8 +35. will need camber bolts for front.
