Scion Racing Drift FR-S Unveiled 600 HP / 500 TQ

"Scion Racing / GReddy Performance FR-S was built in-house at the GReddy R&D facility in Irvine, CA under great secrecy. A GReddy turbocharged boxer engine powers the drift machine. The entire GReddy Team is excited to debut the drift FR-S at the season opener on the “Streets of Long Beach,” on April 6-7, 2012. "

--Due to the limited amount of time, the GReddy Racing Scion FR-S is currently powered by a Cosworth CS600 EJ25 long block and custom GReddy turbo kit with a front-mount intercooler. The EJ25 is a race proven and reliable boxer motor that offers many of the same benefits seen in the FA20 including a low center of gravity. We are currently working on a FA20 motor for use in future race programs.

----DETROIT NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW-----

The launch of the FR-S shifted into high gear in Detroit today when Scion unveiled the Scion Racing/GReddy Performance FR-S to compete in Formula Drift this season. The highly modified racer, to be piloted by Scion veteran Ken Gushi, boasts some 600 horsepower and more than 500 lb.-ft. of torque yet weighs 300 pounds less than the featherweight stock sports car.

It’s fitting that Gushi is grabbing the reigns of Scion’s first drift-optimized FR-S. His father taught the then-14-year-old native of Japan how to drive, and drift, in a Toyota AE86—a precursor to the FR-S. Gushi progressed quickly in the sport, becoming the youngest competitor in both the D1 Grand Prix in Japan and Formula Drift in America. In 2011, Gushi competed in Formula Drift in the RS-R Scion Racing tC.

Quote:

“This car looks absolutely phenomenal! Doesn’t it look fast just parked here on this stage? Wait until you see what happens when we let it loose on the track.”
Hollis said that in addition to drifting, Scion plans to promote its new sports car in other motorsports venues, including Time Attack.

i am digging it more and more.

NorCalRider 01-09-2012 06:00 PM

I want some more motor info. Looks like it might be a cosworth motor going by what info we have to date.

Syldrin 01-09-2012 06:03 PM

can we maybe add the other photos to this thread and make this the drift fr-s discussion.

Slide 01-09-2012 06:23 PM

What motor is in this!?

EJ20 01-09-2012 06:52 PM

with this much of torque, I'm 100% sure its an EJ257 :D

RRnold 01-09-2012 06:55 PM

Nice!!! :happy0180:

WingsofWar 01-09-2012 07:26 PM

I figured the Drift car needs its own sticky thread for discussion rather than flood Hachi's NAIAS coverage thread.

Syldrin 01-09-2012 07:36 PM

love you WoW.

Syldrin 01-09-2012 07:49 PM

Syldrin 01-09-2012 07:58 PM

Syldrin 01-09-2012 10:08 PM

note the vid in the first 50 sec or so and look carefully at both cars....look familiar? that's the "spy footage" we were all speculating about a week ago.

"we don't expect many Scion owners to take it to this level"

-why not? It is a "blank canvas" and a "enthusiast's car"

(I think that line proves the fact that it is pretty expensive to make lots of horsepower)

nuf said.

Levi 01-10-2012 07:38 AM

Because the Cosworth engine is so expensive or because the FR-S base price is so high that nobody will want to spend more?

spin9k 01-10-2012 10:56 AM

If the car only 'needs' 200HP to be so much fun.... WTH is this one doing with 600HP?

Just another example of "Do as I say, not as I do///" meh

thefullmonty 01-10-2012 11:08 AM

The vehicle Greddy built for Formula-D is just an example of what can be done to an already beautifully engineered car. First off its an EJ25 so it doesn't share the same engine, so comparing them is a little hard even through both power plants are Boxer engines. I'm interested to see why they will do with more time and the original drivetrain.
I am pretty pumped that this car will be competing either way.

cossey 01-10-2012 11:25 AM

the cosworth engine is ~$13k for a long block so ~$20k for engine and ecu assembly. I'm interested to see what the gearbox and rear diff is.

Yeah and keeping in mind that the Cage, turbo setup also adds weight back into the car. Still being lighter is sweet.

It's Formula D bro....9 out of 10 cars has 500-700+whp.

Formula Drift Weight and Tire Classes-

2000-2099lbs up to 215mm

2100-2199lbs up to 225mm

2200-2299lbs up to 235mm

2300-2399lbs up to 245mm

2400-2499lbs up to 255mm

2500-2599lbs up to 265mm

2600-2699lbs up to 275mm

2700-2799lbs up to 285mm

2800-2899lbs up to 295mm

2900-2999lbs up to 305mm

3000-3099lbs up to 315mm

3100-3199lbs up to 325mm

3200-3299lbs up to 335mm

It takes alot of hp to get up to speed quickly, break traction and keep 265mm sticky tires smoking. 200hp is perfect for drift days just not pro competition. I can't wait for the D1GP guys to build one. Check out what Team orange does with the rwd sti's

Is this drift car the SECOND "race car" built off of this platform? GT300 BRZ being the first...

Can we expect a drag car? Or better yet...an FIA RGT class rally car! If you look at the RGT rules and Subaru's rally heritage it's almost like they were custom written for the 86 to come and dominate.

Pike's Peak is going to be paved this year. Toyota, Subaru; that's a good place to have your car's picture taken. I'll even drive it for you. :D

Then there is LSR. How fast can the little car go on the salt? I'd like to see a factory team effort at Bonneville followed by a Red Hat Limited Edition of the car.

Speaking of Limited Editions...the guy that was The Stig on TopGear should be offered a sum of money to use his name on a Stig Limited Edition (all black or all white).

Crack3n 01-15-2012 07:22 PM

such a beautiful car, really hope the performance is as good as its looks
