Any Modification regrets?

Hey guys, as the community is getting well into modding the twins, we're starting to see more of "I used to have <this> and switched to <this>."

If this is you, let us know why. We'd love to learn what works and what to avoid.

Mandy 03-24-2013 02:19 AM

Mine's stock right now (and will most likely remain so); however, I feel that a lot of people going for the Rocket Bunny kit will regret it when nicer things come out. Yeah, it gives it the widebody/racecar look, but it just doesn't look as refined as it could.

m.wood0213 03-24-2013 02:47 AM

intake, $$$, but i like the noise and my AT doesnt have to downshift as much now when cruising up and down hills. Almost bought catback q300 but ended up buying JDM tips and I love it did exactly what i wanted. better looks.

suaveflooder 03-24-2013 02:52 AM

Great thread! subn' Like Mandy said, mine is stock as well, it will probably remain that way, but if I ever get the itch it will be nice to know what to skip.

Shneegle 03-24-2013 03:03 AM

I have only tinted the windows and got LED DRLs and License plate LEDs from Concept-Three-LED's. Plan to get more LEDs for the car and eventually plan to go with Nameless Performance Header with exhaust and tune. So far no regrets but I have not done anything major yet either.

civicdrivr 03-24-2013 03:21 AM

Airaid intake. Huge waste of money.

RIPTRD71 03-24-2013 03:34 AM

I have a few light modifications including, custom muffler delete, Apexi air filter, Cusco front tower brace, Cusco Carbon antenna and tint. So far I do not regret any of the modifications I have done.

mrlewistan 03-24-2013 03:45 AM

hid head lights and led dlr. only regret it when it snows because it feels like im driving with the highbeam on and i cant see cause the snow is reflecting it all back at me

Wes 03-24-2013 03:58 AM

I have a Perrin resonated catback, aFe drop in, Cusco front and rear strut tower bars, Cusco catch can, HIDs (6k), LED reverse lights, and TRD style carbon fiber rear spoiler, VG shark fin, 3M clear bra.

So far regret none, love all of it, if anything I was a little disappointed in the LED reverse since the pictures make it so much more than it was, they do look sick in person so I forgive it, but just not all THAT much more functional.

switchlanez 03-24-2013 04:18 AM

1. My stickers. I had about 16 throughout the exterior at one point. Good thing they're removable... now I'm down to 6.

2. My Cusco tow hooks. Good thing they're also removable. But it feels satisfying getting my inner ricer out of my system. New uncut tow hook covers are on order. I might put the tow hooks back on for the occasional car show.

3. My Takeda intake. Wish I got the identical GReddy version with its blue logo to match my blue valve cover. Instead I have a red logo which sorta matches the TRD logo on my strut tower bar and thought it'd match my red TRD red sound changer til I discovered the sound changer is installed out of view. Plus the Takeda version was $50 cheaper than GReddy's. I also originally wanted a variety of brand mods (Takeda intake and GReddy exhaust instead of both being GReddy) to maximize count on the roll call of stickers that *used* to run down my rear window. But plans changed (see regret #1).

My semi-color coordinated engine bay (intake logo matches red TRD logo if you squint for it):

Calidrifter 03-24-2013 04:37 AM

1.) Cusco Strut tower bar. Well not really as I got it on a deal. But wanted something that not everyone had so I sold it and got the CF version instead.

2.) 5:AD spoiler. Again I wanted something not everyone else had so I got the TRD Japan lip spoiler instead.

Supermassive 03-24-2013 06:17 AM

I regret buying red parts...I originally wanted a White/Black/Red scheme for everything, but am now going light blue/orange/black...

TyperRspec789 03-24-2013 06:36 AM

When my car was going through the turbo e85 transition, I took the opportunity to trade/sell parts off my car to compensate for the extra power of the turbo.

1. Upgraded wheel/tire setup
Sold my 17x8 Gold RPF1s on Hankook Ventus v12 245 square setup ($950) and Seibon OEM style carbon fiber hood ($500)---> bought 17x8 Gold RPF1s w/ 235 BFG KDWs and 17x9 Gold RPF1s w/ 255 BFG KDWs (staggered setup for $1850)

2. Upgraded exhaust setup
Traded my Perrin non-res catback for a Greddy evo3 for the price of $40 (split gas/toll expenses with forum member for the trade). Sold my Motiv frontpipe with HFC for $250 and bought a J2 Engineering 2.75" frontpipe for $100.

3. Extra cash purchases
Bought air inlet for $40 and Perrin front plate relocator ($70) to delete my front grille. In addition, I bought GT86 fog bezels for $41.

I had a lot of fun doing this lol. It honestly didn't cost me that much to upgrade my wheels/tires, exhaust, and venting. I felt like a barter king doing it!

The one thing I learned from the experience is to always buy parts that'll have a decent resale value just in case you need to change up your setup. The Enkei's, Seibon, and Motiv stuff really held value.

Neilus 03-24-2013 06:58 AM

I would really like a choice of rear defusers to bolt on. I have seen a few carbon fibre covers etc but I want something with a real race look (still legal if we can) and also be nice if it was affordable.

I might be dreaming..... had to put it out there.

l0aded 03-25-2013 05:41 PM

of all my mods (in my sig) the only one I'm not 100% happy about (not necessarily regret) is my intake. Not because the intake is worse than others but after doing my research I read from many of the tuners that the stock intake is actually extremely good. The only issue is when the car is not tuned it causes it to underperform.

Essentially every intake will give you nothing over a drop in filter (~70$) when tuned so paying 250 for my injen was essentially a 180 dollar engine bay looker. I forgot which thread it was but someone said the stock intake is good up to 195whp IIRC which pretty much no one has without FI or e85.

Tt3Sheppard 03-25-2013 05:47 PM

Saved me from buying an intake haha. Stick to my drop in for now.

clzzical 03-25-2013 07:24 PM

My only regretful mod is the JDM exhaust tips, reason being I'm looking into getting an axle back exhaust... I find myself wanting a deeper exhaust note for increased driving enjoyment.

switchlanez, do you regret the TRD sound changer at all, given you have the Greddy SP Elite axleback?

boredom.is.me 03-25-2013 07:35 PM

I regret my LED DRLs. They look pretty, but are completely useless beyond that. I have regular halogens on the way to replace them.

LeeMaster 03-25-2013 07:51 PM

I wouldnt call my mods regretful, but I do regret getting the Injen intake + Perrin Oil cooler combo. You can only do one mod or the other, not both due to clearance issues when installing both. So if I had to do it all over again, I wouldve gotten a cold air intake instead but there werent any available back in August.

shawnperolis 03-25-2013 07:54 PM

My only regret is that I haven't started modding yet.

BRZPDX 03-25-2013 08:12 PM

My regret is the catless/non resonated Invidia Frontpipe. Well, its a future regret since when I go change my headers, and put the Vortech SC kit on this summer, its gonna be outrageously loud if I don't start putting resonators in.

dem00n 03-25-2013 08:22 PM

Exhaust tips. Rusted 3 months into owning them. What a waste of money and time.

Vegas Racing 03-25-2013 08:28 PM

That I dont have enough money to do the mods Id like.

Beyer Subaru 03-25-2013 08:35 PM

No regrets as of yet with the parts that I've chosen and installed. The only things I regret are the things I didn't research enough before I purchased and never even installed.

1. The wrong STi Starter Button for the GR/GV/GH etc Impreza and/or other Suby Models. Now it's a 200 paperweight.

2. The Scion Mud Guards. These didn't jive with my wheels straight away and totally would be a "custom" fit if I wanted to use them with my STi kit.

3. The 1st bobo hood props that became available that everyone scooped up. The fitment was piss poor and I am much happier with the Syms Dampers. They have OEM fit and finish.

Nope, no regrets because I can still hear the difference between with and without the sound changer. The sound changer adds an extra induction sound on top of the lower frequency Takeda intake sound. Both these induction sounds coming from in front and directly into the cabin sound different than the even lower frequency exhaust sound coming from behind/below. So sounds don't quite get drowned out... more like "orchestrated" due to the different frequencies each hit.

Nah, stick with the GReddy. The blues pop!

MisterSheep 03-29-2016 07:01 PM

What is your biggest regret mod wise

3 year bump!

Now that it's been 3 years since the last post I wonder how many of you have modded something on your car and then regretted it? It would be helpful to the community to help prevent others from hopefully not making the same mistake. So post them up! Explain why you regret them!

Who8myrice 03-29-2016 07:08 PM

I really regret getting 86logo plaque for space between cup holders and shifter. Oh boy what a waste of money

go_a_way1 03-29-2016 07:11 PM

SpecD headlights, they look great, but have been a pain in my ass! Well more or less get stuck on highbeams and blind the shit out of other people with my 55W HID's

kch 03-29-2016 07:12 PM

I kind of regret the whiteline trans bushing. It added some NVH and I don't know if I can tell a difference. But it's not a huge deal.

I regret purchasing a pulley kit. Never installed them because of reasons; sold for a loss.

 I specifically went with 35 watt to look OEM, at first i was like hey 55 watt seems nice but then people advised against it for electrical reasons and legality here in PA

HachiRo 03-29-2016 07:20 PM

I regret going from a TRD spoiler to a modded WRX STi wing to my RBV3.
I don't have regrets on the end result, I just regret jumping so much lol.

Also, regret buying Rocket Bunny fenders only to end up selling for a much lower price.. but hey, the new owner's car is dope and he's on this forum!

kch 03-29-2016 07:24 PM

Oh I forgot--I regret getting the Raceseng 2" rear shock mounts. I got them used from a friend. Unfortunately, to avoid preloading the rear springs, my car is now hella stanced bro and it's a little difficult to get into some parking lots. Shoulda gotten the 1" mounts instead.

edit: pic of suspension under lateral load. wheels tucked like woah.

most definitely not legal, but neither is much else on my car so I dont worry about it lol! So far no electrical issues with the HID kit itself

Do you mean the little wedge insert? I love that thing. Could tell a difference right away, personally. For me it is most felt when over-revving on a revmatch downshift. Car doesn't slam forward as much/transmission doesn't crash off the mount. Even upshifts are smoother. Maybe it's just my bad driving that reveals it's benefits for me haha.
