What Air Intake//Cold Air Intake should i get??

I want to get an intake, but i'm not sure whats good could anyone help me out??

BoxRZ_86 03-24-2013 02:18 AM

No experience, but the one I want to get is the perrin's full cold air intake

StraightDrivin 03-24-2013 02:22 AM

what extra performance is it supposed to add? if you know.

m.wood0213 03-24-2013 02:31 AM

AEM intake is great. only one ive seen that includes a plug for the oem maf to tune it for the extra air flow and piping size. it uses a hybrid AEM/ K&N dry filter as well. not the prettiest intake but works great. Ive had it 3 months or so, no CEL light and dealership said nothing to me about it either. I pm'd jeremy @ ft86speedfactory.com because they use both the AEM and AFE on their frs' they said the AEM is a bit better but a bit more $$$. Perrin looks really cool but might get into the way of the rad and will be tedious to change filter or clean. whereas AEM has 4 bolts that remove the top and the one hose clamp.

Yea have to say it doesn't look the prettiest but it does give significant horsepower and torque.

WolfsFang 03-24-2013 03:06 AM

injen, gives the most power and has a great price to it.

Injen vs AFE vs AVO vs AiRaid vs STOCK!

Anything cold air intake would be the best option because it gives your engine bay more space to work on extra stuff and obviously sucks in more cooler air than any SRI would. I hope Injen soon comes up with a CAI to mate up to their current SRI

NorseLegend 03-24-2013 04:57 AM

Go with Perrin. They make top notch stuff, are located in the US, all makes great noise, they add dyno charts with most of their products and the bolt ons give you decent boosts, and they have awesome customer service (with damn decent warranties too!).

Kodename47 03-24-2013 05:41 AM

You've asked an objective question which you'll get a ton of subjective answers. There is no "best option" IMO. What are you after (noise and/or performance) and how much are you willing spend? My personal view was that the more expensive intakes don't give good value. They do look nice though so you'll get kudos.

The Injen is not a CAI. FWIW I have turned a mates Injen into a CAI and it works well.

I just installed the FA20club CAI and I love it. Car sounds absolutely beautiful at every rev range and responsiveness is excellent. It's not the prettiest intake but in my opinion it's the best design. Honestly, if you're not getting a tune with it I'd probably just stick with a drop in filter.

This kind of non-specific question is what causes a shit storm of misinformation.

Those dyno runs were done with the hood opened and fans blowing on the intake. In real world driving situations the Injen gets heat soaked easily due to its open-faced design that basically makes it a hot air intake in traffic and low speed driving situations. The problem is that heat rises up off the headers and gets trapped under the hood and you get sluggish throttle response and bogging again because the Injen doesn't completely seal the filter and so it doesn't receive cool air unless the hood is open or you're driving at highway speeds. Don't take my word for it, though:

This. If you want to get your moneys worth, buy a TRUE CAI. Vigilant, FA20Club, Perrin, all make them and they are worthwhile. A SRI is not worth the money, IMO, unless you're going to get an ECU tune to go with it. All things considered with the stock ecu tune, True CAI > Stock + Drop-In filter > SRI

Expect 4-5whp gain, more induction noise, better throttle response with any true CAI on the stock ecu tune.

Do you mind sharing pictures? I want to see how it looks before deciding to tackle on this project myself.

Its just a fascia that mates to the stock snorkel. He's only just been tuned so we have yet to get any factual data but you can feel that the intake pipe is much cooler after driving. I'll see if there's any pics about as I don't have any.

did you use a 3" pipe for the cai piece?

Nope, just the OEM air feed into the now air box. It means its similar to the AEM or K&N. I will do some tests shortly to see the impact on MAF and IAT with and without the fascia.

tennisfreak 03-24-2013 10:53 PM

My local dealer just quoted me a price of $525 to install a TRD cold air intake.

I cannot find a single piece of information anywhere on the internet about a cold intake from Toyota.

The dealer even gave me a picture of it: http://www.toyotaasg.com/imagebank/98102.jpg

I tried to get into that site and do some research myself but it appears its a dealer parts site and you need a region and dealer code.

Anyone have info/opinions on this TRD Cold Air Intake?

Yeah, it's stupidly overpriced and I doubt it's any better than aftermarket. That's TRD for you; overpriced and mediocre performance.

+1 for FA20club's CAI.. totally agree with Bg8780.. may not the prettiest, but it's one of the most, if not the most effective.. two 45 degree bends just seem better than two 90 degree bends.. it costs less too.
