Feeler: FR-S with severe hail damage

1 Attachment(s)
I went and looked at a FR-S today that was in a hail storm with hail up to 4" in diamater. It busted both front and rear windows out plus has major dents on it.

I am thinking the the dents could be bondoed and the car then wrapped to make a cheap track car that would not look to bad.........

What would be a good starting price to offer for the car?

redcelica 03-23-2013 11:40 AM

whats the mileage on the car and why isn't your ins. covering this?

It has about 5,000 miles. It is not my car, I am looking at it to purchase in the as-is condition.
I am thinking of offering $10,000.00.

abutterman 03-23-2013 12:13 PM

damn that must've been one hell of a storm. Is it just the roof, trunk and hood that got dented up or did the sides take a hit too? I'm assuming the seller doesn't have proper insurance to get it fixed for just a deductible? You should check with your insurance too... maybe you can get it cheap and then just have them cover the repairs. that would make for an awesome deal

jtsherri 03-23-2013 12:27 PM

You'd be surprised how reasonably a paintless dent removal guy could take care of this. The ones that are good can literally clean up every panel on this thing (note: some small holes would need to be drilled on the back sides of panels) and they'd charge you a flat rate.

Also, I think $10k may be a tad low, but not unfair. Definitely feasible and a good offer. Best of luck!

Burrcold 03-23-2013 12:50 PM

If you could get it for $10k that would be a steal!! $5k or less would have that car looking perfect again.

Nothing like ripping off your insurance company. But then again, a lot of other people are dishonest too.

abutterman 03-23-2013 01:10 PM

i didn't mean rip them off. i meant checking with them. like what's the deal if i buy this car and have so and so coverage. can i pay the deductible and get it fixed. never know. some insurance agents will actually tell you to just buy it and then file the claim. when i used to be listed on my parents policy they would always tell us all kinds of holes in the system to save more money

And we wonder why rates are so high...

redcelica 03-23-2013 03:49 PM

between 12 and 14 is a fair offer...would cost $7k to fix that damage

abutterman 03-23-2013 04:15 PM

hmmm if it's just the roof, hood and trunk, you could get the Seibon parts for a couple thousand dollars and just replace everything

terrypm 03-23-2013 05:41 PM

The hail was the size of softballs. Every panel has major damage, hood, roof, trunk, fenders and quarter panels. The hail even broke the tail lights and outside mirrors. I am no body man but did have to have a new quarter panel and bumper cover installed in another car and it was expensive. I think it is to severe for a paintless dent removal repair since some the paint was chipped. I doubt $12,000.00-14,000.00 would cover the repair bill if it were taken to a quality shop. I would guess it would be totaled and issued a salvage title which will void the factory warranty, another negative.

It's insurance fraud. You're buying a car damaged and then submitting a claim for them to repair it. Your coverage for insurance starts the day you insure it for losses that happen from that point forward, not items that occurred before you purchased it. If an agent tells you to do that, he's just as crooked.

The damage to the car looks extensive. To be repaired correctly the majority of the exterior panels would need to be replaced. Paintless dent repair is a great tool but there's only so much they can do. Of course if you're not worried about it on a track car, that would be perfect great :)

Besides don't golf balls have tons of dimples for a reason?

I don't think 10k is unfair given the damage though. Do they have an asking price for the car?
Good luck!

They are awaiting their insurance to appraise it.

sevi21 03-23-2013 07:33 PM

That is crazy yo...

BRZPDX 03-23-2013 08:06 PM

It hurts to look at those pics...

Juurian 03-23-2013 08:36 PM

3rd frs in production?

mashal 03-23-2013 09:04 PM

Yeah what is that number 3 mean

mattles 03-23-2013 09:10 PM

its the subaru badges, meaning this would be the owner's 3rd subaru IIRC:

(edit: I also have one of these but I did not put it on my car.)

njccmd2002 03-23-2013 10:34 PM

that will buff out

Burrcold 03-23-2013 10:35 PM

Just plasti-dip it.

redcelica 03-23-2013 10:45 PM

Ouch! All I can say is wow...and yeah I retract my $7k repair number and $12-$14k sounds about right. Turn it into a track car :D

Huehuecoyotl 03-23-2013 10:54 PM

Better yet, if you pass on it, let me know and I'll turn it into a wheel to wheel car. ;)

TyperRspec789 03-24-2013 03:16 AM

I'd buy that car at $10k and replace every body panel with aftermarket shit.. From the hood to the trail lights, to the side mirrors. Every part on our cars has an aftermarket option.. Twould be sweet!

sierra 03-24-2013 05:38 AM

Interesting the alloy bonnet[hood] didn't end up looking worse than the steel panels.
I would have expected the dents to be twice as deep.

bestwheelbase 03-26-2013 01:35 AM

You guys are missing the opportunity here. You need MORE dents. Like a golfball. For the aero advantage. :bonk:

terrypm 03-28-2013 02:47 PM

Well I got back up with the dealer who has the car. He said he has to replace the back glass, tail light and side mirror for safety reasons and then he will sell it in the "as is" condition for $13,000.00 plus tax.

That is 3K more than I was estimated.

If anyone else is interested in it pm me and I will give you the particulars.

airtonics 03-30-2013 02:42 PM

I don't see any reason he'd have to do that for safety reasons, unless he just doesn't want water getting in the car.

Sad part is... if it needs a roof panel the back glass/windshield would need to come out anyways for the repairs.
If this car were local to me and he didn't want so much, I'd consider it.

WolfsFang 04-01-2013 07:37 PM

I would buy it and just replace all the parts with carbon fiber.

Would be the cheaper alternative

terrypm 04-02-2013 10:29 AM

I have told several forum members about the car. The last one called the dealer to inquire and was told a deposit had been received on it and they considered it sold.

I hope a forum member bought it.

Guff 04-04-2013 02:42 AM

Dealer is being kinda weird about it, but apparently it's still available.

Assuming this is true, my brother is arranging to get this thing bought tomorrow. So, fingers crossed, this car will my in my (my brother's) possession soon.

terrypm 04-09-2013 01:40 PM

The car has been sold.

Guff 04-09-2013 02:02 PM

I redact what I previously said.

And interesting change in events has occurred.
