Android Knockoff Headunit D.I.Y REQUEST

So since this is the best option (ebay android headunit) I was hoping someone can provide everything that's needed to perform the install?

what tool is needed to remove dash bezel?
brackets?
harness?
how easy is it?
what to look out for?

I'm about to make the purchase and I want the install to go as smooth as..... something really smooth.

Anybody that instlaled it plse provide feedback on installation :thanks:

Fonzi 03-20-2013 10:31 PM

I got one off ebay. You need the harness, you need a lexus antenna adaptor. I forget which one, you can find it in search. There is a lip on the black plastic that will need removed by a razor knive on top and bottom.. There is a space on each side of the unit once installed. Haven't had time for that yet.

Metra dash kit.

kharn83 04-03-2013 02:42 AM

hi 2forme

does the android kit have a external gps antenna or microphone? if so how did u wire these through the dash?

if not, sounds like a fairly easy install hopefully!

thanks
robert!

The GPS is external and included. It is magnetic so I just stuck it on top of the metal frame that sits below the vents. Works fine through the vents.

The microphone is internal in the front of the unit. I haven't tried an external one.

thx 2forme - by vents and the metal frame, do u mean the air vents for driver and passenger? if so isnt there the soft plastic dash which covers those vents? i cant see a metal frame that you refer to.

Also, i got the unit today thanks to your advice :)

So I am wiring it up, although I'm not sure what to do with the following wires from the head unit:

p.cntr (amplifier signal input) wire
p.ant (auto radio antenna) wire

I've hooked the rest of them as appropriate into the metra wiring harness, and the only wires that I haven't connected from the metra harness (and I'm not sure what to do with) are :

power antenna wire
amp turn on wire
amp ground wire
dimmer wire
phone mute wire

I also purchased the 40-LX11 antenna adapter. I assume the Headunit p.ant wire links to the blue wire of the 40-lx11 antenna adapter, leaving the metra harness power antenna wire unused?

your advice as always would be much appreciated, and sorry if it was heaps to read >< !

In the dash where the head unit goes (under the center vents), there is a metal frame that essentially frames where the head unit sits. I stuck it on top of that.

p.cntr (amplifier signal input) wire - This goes to an amp signal wire if you have one.
p.ant (auto radio antenna) wire - This goes to the antenna power wire on the antenna adapter you bought.

I've hooked the rest of them as appropriate into the metra wiring harness, and the only wires that I haven't connected from the metra harness (and I'm not sure what to do with) are :

power antenna wire - See above
amp turn on wire - See above
amp ground wire - Ground
dimmer wire - Orange with white stripe on the metra
phone mute wire - Unused

I also purchased the 40-LX11 antenna adapter. I assume the Headunit p.ant wire links to the blue wire of the 40-lx11 antenna adapter, leaving the metra harness power antenna wire unused? Yes

your advice as always would be much appreciated, and sorry if it was heaps to read >< !

Which unit? @2forme already did perhaps the most indepth reviews I've ever seen on a car stereo head unit for the two main Android based units available here.

2forme 04-03-2013 12:54 PM

@Lee358, did you want a review on the knockoff?

Mr.Jay 04-03-2013 01:08 PM

I got the same unit and its great for the price and I really enjoy having torque setup on it as well. Boot up is a bit slow and if nothing is on the unit itself is a bit loud but for cost I have no complaints.

I routed my gps to the roof where my oem mic is.

Real easy install tho some thongs have to be modified to fit

2forme 04-03-2013 01:18 PM

I have a knockoff that is supposedly capacitive coming in today. I hope it's better than the last one that was "capacitive" (was really resistive).

kharn83 04-04-2013 08:01 PM

hi guys

just wondering, with the install of the head unit, did u guys have to cut off the top bezel of the head unit to put the dash trim back in? if so, what did u guys cut it with, stanley knife? im guessing the bottom bezel doesnt need to be cut?

thx!
robert

If you have to cut, youre doing it wrong. No cutting is required

thanks trashed675,

strange, it seems to fit in almost perfectly, other than my dash surround trim piece cant pass over the front of the head unit, its like the head unit is a few mm too tall and the trim cant be inserted where it normally sits. (thereby why i thought i could just shave a few mm off the head unit to allow dash surround to pass over it)

i'll have another look at my positioning of the head unit. thanks for the reply.

(btw i mounted the head unit using the original metal mounts that were on the side of the original head unit)

Cheers
Rob

@kharn83, You have to trim off the plastic "lip" on top and bottom for it to fit correctly.

BTW, I did manage to get my hands on a capacitive Ca-Fi knockoff. I'll be rooting it tomorrow and getting Torque running on it. :)

Ebay? What seller?

I did buy a Parrot Asteroid though now that I know it can be rooted.

Tradesolution or something like that. The screen works very well. I'm about to head to the garage to root it :)

I didn't have to trim anything off mine. It its a tight fit though, and there is a certain clunk when it gets seated.

Interesting. I had to trim both my resistive and capacitive knockoffs....

If you wouldn't mind, can you share a link to the one with a capacitive screen? I may be forced to get one. Lol!

Here. They have a regular store online too, http://tradesolution.hk/

I see they make these with android 4.0 now.. I wonder if those have a capacitive screen. That would stuck me right in!

The ICS ones are dual boot systems with WinCE for radio, ipod, and FM... and only using Android for Nav. It sucks because they have a hard time blending music and nav. The one I tried could only play audio from either android or wince, never both. And now, they aren't capacitive from what I've seen.

Android became lag free when 4.1 was rolled out (Project Butter). Google returned me this headunit with 4.1. Has anyone tested this?

Thanks heaps for this @2forme

What model is it that we should look at. I see there's a Toyota one as well as other models?

Do you recommend waiting until they have android 4.1 or is it working well enough for you to jump in now?

I mean, for now it's fine. It's not like you're spending 900+ on a kenwood or something. Do you really know of any apps you'd use that require 4+?

Ah! ok! What were the issues with this? Appears to have a faster processor and with 4.1 it should have been lag free?

The issue is that WinCE is used for everything except Nav. So I would start by turning the radio or iPod on and then switch to Android for nav, and the music would shut off. Now, there's a setting to enable "dual" zone which would allow the music to keep playing, but then Android had no audio... So no turn by turn.

Not to mention most of the WinCE interfaces are hideous.

Sorry @2forme a couple questions.

What was the model from their website you'd recommend? Would the "Toyota" one on your link under "new items" be the one that would be most suitable for our dash "hole" or would another be better.

And, if money was no object (within reason, say up to $1,500 for the head unit) what would be the head unit you would get that would be nice for music but also would be ok to load android apps onto (carsope and/or torque)?

Can't put the emotion of immense gratefulness into text! I haven't found anyone here in New Zealand that is up to date with these units with the technology moving so fast so appreciate this to the nth degree.

.

2forme 04-07-2013 07:07 PM

The Toyota one will fit, but you'll need to modify either the bezel or plastic around the head unit. The bottom won't push on completely. The face itself clears perfectly though. Looks pretty good. They have a capacitive one listed that I'm tempted to try but I've spent enough on it already haha
