Third brake light...(top mount)

So guys i am wanting to change as the mould that they are using is damn ugly and poorly placed.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...0&d=1322426625

So you can see from this pic there is about 1/2 inch gap from bottom of the frame to the light and that just looks ugly!!

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...5&d=1322426572

I can only guess it is to clear this ugly spoiler.

So what i was thinking is mounting an led strip to the roof section that was i wont need to worry about the duckbill spoiler getting in the way of safety.

Something like this http://www.ausmotive.com/images2011/...-Coupe-08s.jpg

Maybe not the full lengeth but might two with that idea.

Anyone know what leds theay are and would it be possible?
Thoughts??

Syldrin 01-06-2012 04:47 PM

i thought the triangle was a brake light too or is it just a reflector?

Rear fog light I believe.

Yes, it's only a reflector. White part is reverse lights.

They should make 3rd brake lights like S2k

That is what i think it is also

RRnold 01-06-2012 08:04 PM

I was thinking the same thing ever since I saw the 3rd brake light. I don't know why it's raised like that and having it flushed would have been better. I really hope they fix it or mount it on the top.

Levi 01-06-2012 08:10 PM

No, the reflectors are in the middle of the taillights, in the center of the LED circle. The low triangle light is the fog light for EU and JDM spec, in US spec it is just empty. Actually there you could put the brake light and that is what I am going to do when race conversion will be done.

It's similar to the rear brake light on the IS F and ISx50 with spoiler, I have a feeling it will stay for final production, unfortunately.

I kind of like it... It looks futuristic...sort of.

I don't really mind either way, it's kind of an unimportant detail...

Snoopyalien24 01-07-2012 12:04 AM

C'mon man, a light. It's kind of an important detail, it's not like it's part of the chassis.

But, that's my opinion, totally respect yours.

GZE2 01-07-2012 12:15 AM

Hi. 2nd post.
I like Slide's idea. A lot more visible.

lol yes it is just a light... every time i look in the rear vision mirror it looks shit house!! So i will be removing it and mounting my own!

Yeah sure, do a step by step thing. If it looks good, you could get a bunch of other people to do the same, maybe myself included

chulooz 01-07-2012 01:14 AM

I dont like the stock placement, I dont like the above idea either. I am up for wiring it into the bottom triangle. Two brake lights have been sufficient in the past, Im sure it wont cause an issue with the third down low.

In Australia they require the third break light to be higher then the two main ones :'(... or I would full wire that light up as the break.

old greg 01-07-2012 02:29 AM

I think the cleanest option will be a light where the Toyota emblem currently is, along the same lines as concept #3.

Does the Australian car inspection organization thing require DOT/ECE etc approved brake lights?

You're half correct. Center part of brake lights are reflector...
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...0&d=1319867122

It also states that, rear triangle part is rear fog lights & also a reflector.

Slide 01-07-2012 05:32 AM

Nice work!!

azian_advanced 02-17-2012 12:08 PM

nvm

Calum 02-17-2012 01:07 PM

OP, I agree 100%, that light is FUGLY. Normally I don't really care that much about aesthetics, but there's limits. I don't know about the LED's, I'm certainly open to the idea and if you can put something together that works and looks decent I just might buy. I've spent some time thinking about this as well and I haven't come up with any better ideas. I'm just worried about what will be left behind after original is removed. I was going to wait until I got my hands on the car to get a good look at it, I might just cut the stocker to make it sit flush. If it's possible.

Roadstercycle 06-27-2012 12:50 AM

Its weird that every time I glance in the rearview I think a car is following me but its just that third brake light. I've got 1000 miles on my car and it still surprises me. I'd like to remove or move it too.

Bonburner 06-27-2012 04:35 AM

It blocks the rear mirror too much for my taste - even though rear view doesn't show much ..
I really don't like it and wish it wasn't there at all.

I'm approaching 3000 miles and honestly, I don't even see it any more when I look in the mirror. Of course, it never really bothered me when I did see it. I guess I'm used to limited rear visibility.

Draco-REX 06-27-2012 11:47 AM

It's going to be difficult to impossible to remove that light cleanly.

Subaru essentially welded the plastic housing to a plastic bracket under the package tray which is then hot-glued onto the tray.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8025/7...8c57faf9_b.jpg

Essentially the third brakelight housing had plastic pins that go through the black T you see in the picture. Those pins are then melted to fuse the two parts together, sandwiching the tray between.

To remove the light, the pins will have to be drilled out, and hopefully the housing will separate cleanly.

Damn! Subaru knows how to make it hard to custom make anything :mad0259:

It almost makes me wonder if Toyota had a hand in this. In all my previous Subarus the third brake light was easy to remove.

Maybe... Only thing I know is, it's pretty annoying

roguetadhg 06-27-2012 03:49 PM

My experience of third-party LEDs for Auto use makes me wonder if it's worth the time.

Maybe creating a red-led light bar instead of relying on each LED to not burn out. 3 SMDs on each side.

DriftEightSix 12-30-2012 12:26 AM

Anyone able to replace this yet?

whaap 12-30-2012 12:38 AM

Not that I know of. The third brake light is a poor design. I'm willing to bet it will be one of the changes we see in the 2014 model.

Murseman27 12-30-2012 03:41 AM

I can not remember what episode it was, but there was an episode of Top Gear in which Jeremy was reviewing a Jaguar XK and he was fairly dissatisfied about the third break lights placement which was contained in a spoiler that comes up pretty high. He stated that it is an EU regulation that the 3rd break light had to be a certain height from the window or something along those lines. I also believe that the US has laws similar to this so if you are thinking about getting rid of the light that sticks up now i guess you would have to go with a LED strip similar to what you first thought.

hi people, i have an idea like this;

but i don't know how should i apply it yet. I am planning to remove the 3rd brake light completely and also thinking of duck spoiler and add brake light on it... not necessarily on the spoiler but maybe top of the rear window. not sure yet. all i know is i really don't want that brake light on my way while i'm cleaning the window. by the law, i know if the 3rd light been installed then i can not remove it so i am looking for some other place. i believe it will look nice on spoiler... there is no spoiler like that atm so i've done some photoshopping.

any ideas or help how can i do that mod? I think it looks nice.

I like the concept of the integrated duck spoiler light and the top LED bar.

For everyone thinking about moving the third brake light down to the "EU-spec" triangle, keep in mind that the third brake light is really for the car behind that car that is behind you (2nd car back). This way, the 2nd car back can see when you are braking and can anticipate that the car directly behind you will be braking as well. Obviously, moving your third brake light down to the triangle would fail to accomplish this. Like it was previously mentioned, it may be a legal issue in different states.

jetlex 03-01-2013 09:12 PM

I don't see why someone doesn't mount a 3rd brake light in the trunk panel like the Scion Tc...

I was just going to recommend the Password:JDM one...

Only 450 bucks (haha) and it includes a molded thirdbrake light. I wonder how it actually looks fitted though. I may pick one up eventually.

I'd prob get the non break light one and mount my own led bar :D

Tylub 03-04-2013 03:19 AM

I'm waiting for these to be in production. Of course, it would be red though
