Dealership Joyrides

I took my car to Rohrich Toyota today in Pittsburgh, PA to get my oil changed... my car had 8060 miles when I dropped it off.

Once I returned back to the dealership, my car had 8074 miles and the gas tank was close to empty.

Aka someone was joyriding around in my car!

Just wanted to pass this along to folks who are debating where to get their vehicle serviced. Avoid this dealership at all costs!

I'm still pretty upset about the whole thing, but I've learned to accept that dealerships are some of the scummiest businesses around.

chenshuo 03-15-2013 06:23 PM

did you ask the dealer why they put 14 miles on for an oil change? for this kinds of things you really need to ask. You'll know when they give you a bullshit answer.

I noticed the mileage once I got in the car after I already signed the paperwork, so I couldn't address it at the time.

However, I did call back and voiced my complaints to the service manager. He said that the car should not have been driven more than 1 mile and that he was unaware it was driven 14 miles.

Of course dealerships are always going to give you a bullshit answer for why it was joyridden. From the sales side to the service side, it seems like it's all one big racket.

mrlewistan 03-15-2013 06:28 PM

I have a dash cam in mine. But its only been in dealer for service once and that was before the cam. But I like my dealer so I don't worry bout this stuff

Mandy 03-15-2013 06:29 PM

By a GoPro/dash cam. Turn it on when you drop off your car. Profit.

Use said GoPro/dash cam on track day/autox/move to Russia. Profit.

That is really shitty though, I know I'd be furious.

shawnperolis 03-15-2013 06:32 PM

Wow, I'd be incredibly pissed. I'll definitely be getting a dashcam if I ever take my car in for service... I do my own oil changes and stuff because I don't trust dealers.

Hanakuso 03-15-2013 06:35 PM

As a precaution I record the odometer trip and reset it right when I enter the dealership. I'd go one step further by recording the whole time it's been serviced but I dont have a GoPro or anything. Maybe I should just leave my iPhone on the dash. At least if they steal it I can use the findmyiphone app

aghuman 03-15-2013 07:55 PM

That's total bs, I would be livid if that had happened to me, tough situation to be in dude, feel for ya

wbradley 03-15-2013 08:07 PM

The dealer always takes down mileage when I go for service. That gives them and you proof there was monkey business. That is pretty sad really considering you could have been on the street and seen your own car drifting past.

Dorb 03-15-2013 08:09 PM

Thanks for the heads up, my BRZ is going in to have the rear diffuser installed and a 1000 mile oil change and will make notes to protect myself.

I wasn't thinking about using a GoPro. Good idea!

As wbradley said above, make sure the dealer takes down your exact mileage before you hand them the keys. The dealer I bought my car from puts the exact mileage in on the service paperwork a customer has to sign before handing over the keys, and the paperwork a customer gets back when the car is ready to be picked up has exact mileage in and exact mileage out on it.

If you hand over your keys before signing paperwork acknowledging the exact mileage on your car when you dropped it off, don't be surprised when some sketchy stuff happens after you leave.

Clembo 03-16-2013 12:40 AM

Luckily, I can stand and watch everything they do. My dealership has a huge picture window looking out over the entire service area. I can watch them drive it in, do the work and drive it out. Been having my service done there for years with our Corollas and it's always been fine. And as a regular buyer and service customer for years they treat me like part of the family.

No, they're not perfect - sometimes try to sell me fuel injector cleaning or some other BS, but still, better than most. Can't blame them for trying to make some extra $$$s.

OF COURSE your Corolla has been fine. No one is going to joy ride a Corolla.

Sure beats the Beyblade anime my son watches every single night on the iPad.

Gixxersixxerman 03-16-2013 07:00 PM

They put 15 miles on my car swapping out the ECU... I could care less how they drove it, unless they stopped by a local track they didn't drive it no harder then I've drove it.. On one hand I think people need to do what they did back in the day.. Get to know their mechanic, then you know it's done right.. I always took better care of the customers that took the time out to get to know me, and I take the time out to stop by my dealership when I'm around the area.. At valley hi Toyota I know my dealership, I had the check engine light come on, I live in Vegas, I still called valley hi, 3 hours away to make a appointment.. In the end, one of the guys in the club works at the local dealership, so me and some club members went down and I started to get to know them..

On the other hand.. You should've seen me joy ride some of my customers cars.. I've tested out the top speed of a c6 vette, a M5, and saw how hard a S4 Audi would launch.. Ran the piss out of a fully built EVO 9 so.. Yeah, it doesn't always work.. But like I said, I don't really care how anyone else drives my car, they are not driving harder then me, and if they mess it up I know I'm getting a new one if its bad, or getting it fixed and compensated if its not bad..

FT-86- 03-16-2013 07:35 PM

I told the service adviser that I didn't want anybody driving the car out (not even 1 mile). He wrote it down and they only did oil change. Check your oil level before you leave though because sometimes they forget to actually put the oil in. lol

sigh.... easy for you to say since you are a mechanic. Most of the guys in here like myself dont know how to work our ways inside an engine block/transmission/diff. So if said mechanic broke something and knows it, he will do whatever he can to mask it up. Amateur guys like myself wont know it until after we have driven for a couple days and by that time when we take our cars in for service the mechanic will blame it on us being negligent.

Exactly!

Retro86 03-17-2013 03:01 AM

hmmm thanks for the heads up. i will definitely troll my dealership hahha

BlaineWasHere 03-17-2013 03:24 AM

I reset my trip every time I drop my car off for service. My FR-S has never been driven more than 1 mile by the dealer for service (and I have 23K miles so I've had a few services).

Subie 03-17-2013 06:35 AM

Definitely check the oil level and color, too, after the oil change. With my last car, the Toyota dealer forgot to change my oil once during a service. Had I not pulled the dipstick my engine would have been seriously sludged-up.
