Didn't read through all of this yet but this is interesting....

Sounds good, but will it get more power? That’s been the No. 1 followup question since long before joint Toyota/Subaru effort that became the U.S. bound 2013 Scion FR-S (and its Subaru BRZ twin) rear drive sports coupe ever saw the light of day.

Reading the tea leaves after our recent drives of the FR-S and BRZ, it’s all but certain that the Subaru-derived 200-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder 4U-GSE boxer will eventually be boosted to deliver more horses, but when?

If the FR-S prototype that our very own Web production manager Kirill Ougarov recently spotted at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is any indication, it looks like it won’t be long. Ougarov, who shot the photos, indicated that the white car was ‘definitely’ turbocharged.

Speaking of drifting, given that both the white-winged car and the car behind it were FR-S models, it stands to reason that this could be the Scion drift team getting in some testing before the 2012 season. Scion is heavy into drifting and has campaigned a tC modified to rear drive specifically for the team.

It’s an absolute no brainer for the FR-S to take over as the Scion drift team star, but it stands to reason that in order to really get its drift on, the FR-S would need more power.

Whatever the reason for its presence at Mazda Raceway, the FR-S turbo sighting is good news for drift fans and all those who already can’t wait for a higher spec version of the FR-S. Given that the base FR-S and BRZ won’t be on sale in base form until mid-year, we wouldn't expect any turbocharged production model until close to the end of 2012.

kinda sucks they dont give a reason why the photographer thinks its turbocharged i.e blow off valve, intercooler, wastegate sound.

Its funny how this car isn't out yet and they are talking about more power.

well for drifting it makes sense, but yea i know what you're talking about. im pretty sure the only people that aren't begging for more power are the people that have already driven it, but hey what can you do?

MrVito 01-03-2012 10:37 AM

If it turns out it is the formula D team cars, then I'd guess it's just a built EJ25, probably dry sumped with a forward mounted turbo on a custom manifold. Just to stay inline with the gobs of power every other car is making.

Kids Heart 01-03-2012 11:05 AM

Yeah it sucks that Formula D judges don't handicap for lower hp cars. It's like they value plumes of smoke over tons of angle and aggressive transitions these days.

JDLM 01-03-2012 11:48 AM

the video doesn't give too much away either

tripjammer 01-03-2012 11:55 AM

So turbo model might be out this time next year? Dang! I thought it was going to be supercharged? Oh wait they are going to be using the 2.0 turbo motor in the 2013 WRX...I see...

This still does not mean the production car will get this motor...at least not yet.

czar07 01-03-2012 12:02 PM

im sure i heard a bov in the video

EDIT: yep definitely a bov

Syldrin 01-03-2012 12:04 PM

ya'll don't hear the BoV when the FR-S lets off the throttle in the video?

VenomRush 01-03-2012 12:07 PM

there wasn't a video when i first saw the article

czar07 01-03-2012 12:09 PM

you can hear the BOV as its coming round the corner and then again when its completed the drift.

I forgot them as well

Video is in the side panel

Okay heard it that time in the last corner the "wobble" sound

Syldrin 01-03-2012 12:12 PM

it sounds stock though except that little pssshheewww

Shevon 01-03-2012 12:41 PM

Yep definately a blow off valve

Snoopyalien24 01-03-2012 12:46 PM

Yeah thats a BOV but why does it have such a STi rumble, if it has equal headers or something? Maybe this is an engine swap to the EJ?

That's what a post on page 1 said..could be

Dragonitti 01-03-2012 12:49 PM

I have to vote for Ej swap..If not, that would be some hella-fast turbo development.

Or the High Spec U.S. model with turbo has an EJ

I wouldn't go that far....lol. Just that they swapped in an Ej for drifting to get more power (as it's unfortunately needed in FD).

SVTSHC 01-03-2012 01:10 PM

Wish they had a mobile video :(. Work firewall blocks the video:thumbdown:

Levi 01-03-2012 01:28 PM

Nothing special guys. It is just like the BRZ GT300, an AS1 with EJ. No turbo for production model. That was also the puprose in the concept of have the same engine mounts as for both FA and EJ.

Dragonitti 01-03-2012 01:38 PM

Turkey BOV...just heard the video...lol. Yeah Boxer rumble too, so Ej must be since they are easily swapped in supposedly. Should be sick though to have the big power out of a well balanced and light chassis. Weird hearing that sound and seeing it not in a WRX.

Thats why a BIW offering could be an awesome start for a killer build! :party0030:

Just playing devils advocate here, but the new motor would also have a rumble with an unequal header would it not?

I also think it's an EJ, but it may be something else.

Dragonitti 01-03-2012 01:48 PM

I would imagine so. Like I mentioned, that's some fast development if it is the standard motor just boosted.

Yeah, I'm hoping the new FB, but *sigh* we can only hope

with the FA motor or EJ??

ZetaVI 01-03-2012 02:21 PM

Ken Gushi's Formula D car for sure.

subatoy 01-03-2012 02:22 PM

Whats the point of this article?!
Even if this car has a turbo it could be simply
Modified. That doesnt mean the factory car will have one.

iff2mastamatt 01-03-2012 02:22 PM

The vid on autoblog was like a 2 second sound clip- is that enough to justify that it sounded like a turbo?

Snoopyalien24 01-03-2012 02:24 PM

Quick question, If one swaps an EJ in there, how does one not make it AWD?
