HKS EL 4-2-1 Header - Pics / Videos / Dynos - FT-86 SpeedFactory Review

Here we go again. Time for another review and another header. Seems like this will be a hot topic for some time.

What we're looking at here is the HKS Equal Length Header for the Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota GT-86. This is a 4-2-1 design which HKS has designed in house like everything else they do.

We will be bolting this onto our Red Scion FR-S which is being used for SCCA STX competition. We will have install photos, and videos as usual. We are also going to be strapping it down to the dyno as well. :)

We had a very small batch come in for us here and a few select customers who will be posting as well. But we wanted to get one for our other car so we can compare a few differences if any between EL and UEL.
( We also have another EL header showing up next week. ;) )

Time for some pics. Quality on this is top notch as to be expected. Comes with wiring extension as the moved the location of one of the O2's from stock location which makes sense since this is an EL. They also toss in another bung and cap, so if you want you can drill and weld it on for a wideband sensor install.

This is why you should have gotten a catted front pipe so you don't have to wait to get one on a header.

Yikes... think I'll still be sticking with the Nameless header. Doesn't look like anyone else is doing longtube designs.

mad_sb 03-13-2013 11:14 AM

I have to admit the whole HKS system together is a bit quieter than i thought it would be.

The Slow One 03-13-2013 11:19 AM

This really looks like the factory header without the heatshields...

true, but i went with the ark performance one that has the helmholtz on there to eliminate the dreadful drone. I do know nameless is working on one with a cat as well, but I have heard maybe a thing or two about ark performance doing a header. I personally would love to stick with a full ark system since my test pipe and catback is from them. it's just the waiting game. i have other things i can do to the car while i wait though.

SkAsphalt 03-13-2013 02:28 PM

Yeah... I do not know if I would actually trust a HKS header after seeing all of their exhaust rust threads and pics

Not really... :iono:

WatchmaN 03-27-2013 08:50 PM

how are the dyno results coming along?

liquidsky44 03-28-2013 04:05 AM

With this header would I still be able to keep the heat shields on with the headers installed?

Sorry, we haven't even installed these on the red car, yet! Have been making suspension changes on the silver car for one lap and getting the new shop in order.

We hope to, at least, have some videos up of this paired with a T1R exhaust this weekend.

No, this header is a completely different design from the OEM header.

Cheers!

Do you guys have any headers that will fit in the heat shield? Reason I want to keep the oem look.

I think the P&L Motorsports, and FA20 Club headers are a long-tube design as well.

Yeah, I saw that. I think the longer secondaries are affecting the dip when tuned. I'd like to see more results.

FT-86 SpeedFactory 04-01-2013 09:13 AM

With the HKS 4-2-1 Equal Length Header, Perrin overpipe, Invidia catted front pipe, and a T1R 70R Sparrow single exit cat-back, no boxer-rumble here. Just the sweet high revving sounds of a high-compression, four cylinder engine. The exhaust song is reminiscent of the AP1 generation of the Honda S2000 and begs to wrapped out to redline. I am really looking forward to hearing this thing in the powerband all the way around the track, lap after lap.

Under 4K rpm, the tone is quite tame. You know that the exhaust is there, but you don't have to worry about any unwanted attention when just cruising around town. Best part about the setup, no drone. Cruising rpms are still quiet and pleasant, and the system will not impede on any conversations you are having in the car:w00t:

There is significant difference in mid-range torque and power. This car was almost completely stock before these mods and the car has come alive. Car has yet to be tuned and has a stock ECU flash, so there are still gains to be had. We will be sure to share the results once we are able to get on the dyno and get FA20Club to get her running at her best :)

We got Videos. :)

I love this video, the Borla sounds awesome and to think I was even considering HKS. Not anymore. Borla's cat-back is almost like a straight piped exhaust.

I LOVE it guys! Honestly both cars sound great and thanks for all your contributions to the community!

You know, I am somewhat torn. I like the smoothness and S2000 like sound the EL adds to the FRS/BRZ.

I just can't get over how raw the UEL is though. It's just mean sounding.

Still working on that dyno?

8686 06-08-2013 06:34 PM

Also waiting for the Dyno

FT-86 SpeedFactory 06-08-2013 08:00 PM

We have not done a dyno yet, sorry. It literally takes us 6 hours to do it properly and time has been very thin right now. It's on the list once we get back from 86 Expo. If you are attending you can hear the HKS EL in person as we will have the red car there with it installed.

regal 08-03-2013 10:47 AM

On the Ausie forum they claim you can get an HKS package that includes a tune and and HKS flash device for $1600. Is that something you plan on offering ?

regal 09-20-2013 02:45 AM

What is going on with this header, very little info or updates are they hard to obtain ?

We're still using it and racing the car. Love the header, and it makes good power. :party0030:

In stock?

StormTrooper 09-20-2013 10:16 AM

Pretty sure that header is a 4-2-1 design.... Unless those pics aren't for that header.

akyp 10-02-2013 05:51 AM

Is this HKS header coated? If not, can you order one coated?

It appears to be coated but getting an official answer form HKS isn't the easiest thing in the world. :(

Blue line is a good representation. 91 Octane is all we got so thats what it was done on. We ran short on time this day and the silver car got most the attention so we didn't get what we wanted from it.

Blah, might as well just buy a Borla UEL. Or are you holding back till you have more than a handful to sell?

Not holding back at all. Honestly the Borla UEL is the way to go for the price point. Also remember this was 91 octane, and not all dynos will read the same.

kurbkilla 10-03-2013 11:37 AM

Is that with the cat or with out?

Also what is the pipe sizing?
