works Filter

Hi guys,
I have been requested to put up a thread on the Works filter as the original thread has been removed or stopped for what ever reason.
I received the filter from @86_ZN6 in January, dropped it in and took the car for a 40km run to allow for the ECU to self adjust.
The difference in feel and sound is noticeable compared to the OEM filter.
2 months on, I finally opted to to a dyno run to confirm claims of the 8 to 10 hp gains.
I fitted the OEM filter back into the car and drove 50km to Autofix in Durban, where I did a first run, which claimed 115kw.
Dropped the Works filter in and did a second run, with no gains obtained, 115kw.
We then disconnected the battery waited 5 minutes and reconnected to allow the ECU to reset.
Ran the Dyno again, with a gain of 3 kw to 118kw.

The tests were done at the rear wheels, which effectively loses 25%, so effectively this would give a gain of just over 5hp, ( give or take)
What must also be noted is we dropped the filter in and did not give the ECU a run around the block to adjust itself, which could possibly have given further gains.

All in all these results are not bad for a DIF.

The test was done just after Midday at around 38 degrees on the coast.

Please note any modification has warranty issues and any decision is at your own risk.
Hope this is helpfull.:thanks:

Test run at Autofix Durban.

The first independant before & after dyno test for this filter in the world !!!

I haven't checked, but I'm guessing the TRD air filter has less or similar results?

xjohnx 03-05-2013 01:28 PM

should've done a 4th run with stock filter back in, battery pulled for 5 min for ecu to reset again.

supramkivtt2jz 03-05-2013 02:14 PM

Since the reset was done between Works filter runs, the gains are negligible. It cannot be completely attributed to the filter alone.

So its pretty good filter?

TemeCal 03-05-2013 05:17 PM

So, there really isn't anything special about this filter. Kinda figured, but it's good to see some dyno sheets. I'm not sure why the other WORKS filter threads are consistently being locked. Lots of sketchy comments, and lots of skepticism in them.

Honestly, I don't see how this is any different than all of the other filters. K&N, Perrin, AVO, Cosworth, Apexi, AfE, etc... all seem to perform the same at HALF the cost.

I wonder if the power loss, that extends and deepens the torque dip, gives the impression there is more power when it comes back again?

More loss than gain on that dyno chart.

Finally! Now I can take this off my bucket list.

Please enlighten me on what you have done to gain further HP for under $75.

What you mean to tell me you've never heard of stickers??? :slap:

Cadenz 03-06-2013 12:54 AM

Well now that that has been put to rest somewhat, anyone want to recommend to me a nice dry and washable filter? Afe? Apexi? Zeta?

AllDayJonRay 03-06-2013 01:15 AM

So it looks like this drop-in isn't magical after all....

I never would've expected this result...

My K&N purchase was just justified.

Ryan86 03-06-2013 02:55 AM

Whether the filter is magical or not, it would be interesting to see Dyno runs of other DIF, before anyone makes an assumption that other filters are better.

Must take note that the ECU does take a good 20 to 40km to self adjust to the driving conditions you push the car too. (There is a thread confirming this as I am not technically qualified)

I have seen dyno tests done on various DiF, complete new intakes, UniChip, exhaust replacements and yet to find anymore gains than what this Works filter has shown.

If there is better, it would be nice to share with back up dyno charts.

The independant dyno chart showed a net loss for the Works filter, not a gain. It made the torque dip deeper and longer with more loss there than the top end gain.

Hi Ryan
I see your reg is nu>>>i am from the same area...Wyebank..kloof...We must hook up..i have installed an aftermarket filter as well...jr or something from speedshop in kzn...they say it is as good as k&N.my MR2 tuner recommended..said they used on skyline gtr's so i figured worth a try...

Anban 03-06-2013 02:00 PM

car seems slightly better in the lower rpm..but my performnce app in the car still records 0-100 in 7.4 and 1/4 mile at 15.4 so not too sure about gains...
gonna look at a dyno test soon but the tuner i use has issue wid his dyno...might attend the one coming up this weekend...

Ryan86 03-06-2013 02:32 PM

Think I passed you this morning by Hillcrest Toyota 0740 odd.

Anban 03-10-2013 07:57 AM

Just dynoed 118kw in 3 and 121 in 4 190 nm. Car has filter.mAke is rj or jr

sav 03-10-2013 09:07 AM

Impressive. And with the OEM filter?

Vladror 11-04-2013 02:23 AM

anyone dyno'd the SA BRZs yet to see what power they put out with their custom exhaust?

I have dyno the with the BRZ zorst.
I ran a stock run with old SW and got 115wkw, I installed the Works Filter and got 118wkw
2 days later
I fitted the zorst and while doing so Toyota happened to do the SW upgrade and verified with the new zorst all engine ECU readings were correct.
Went straight down to dyno and got 119wkw.
My test cant be deemed 100% accurate as I had the SW change, which may have dropped the total power.
however IMO the exhaust did nothing to help the mid dip and may give 1 to 3 wkw.
That being said, the sound is 10 times better and certainly makes the car sound like a sports car.
would be interesting if someone did a before and after test to see if it does do anything.:sigh:

Vladror 11-11-2013 01:48 AM

thanks Ryan
just subjectively, i think the mid dip is a lot less noticeable after i installed the zorst.
I still got the stock air filter, you reckon i should replace it to get the best out of the exhaust?

Ryan86 11-11-2013 02:45 AM

Definitely recommend getting DIF, got most gains from changing the filter and cheapest gains.
K&N is available in SA.
