Why does USDM model get the smaller muffler tips?

Why does USDM model get the smaller muffler tips compared to the JDM version? Is there a legal reason behind this or something?

noise or sound regulation in cali

AgentOrange 12-23-2011 08:46 PM

I would assume it's an option. :iono:

Ryuu0u 12-23-2011 08:49 PM

Most likely cost along with the ideology that most owners that get this car will change parts out fairly quickly from the show room. Ex: Greddy FRS

Neutral_Eyes 12-23-2011 08:51 PM

Cost savings probably. I'm fine with it, they're just tips. Pipes are the same.

that's just the tip. everything else i believe is the same. i don't think that really has any affect on noise.

Toyota fr-s 12-23-2011 11:50 PM

Looks like cost mainly... The frs is the cheapest one of the two, we know that from the interior options and the exterior is the same way....

The USDM BRZ also has small tips though. Since the BRZ is supposed to be the high-spec model, do you think it's really because of the cost?

cc700 12-24-2011 01:29 AM

americans like more tips, not bigger tips.

CSSM 12-24-2011 03:48 AM

US gets 3 more horsepower from the exhaust system, so that is a benefit

It's not just the pictures.

Go to the scion website and download their high res photos, and you'll see that the exhaust tips on the FR-S are slightly oval while the ones on the JDM cars are round.

Really? You think it's just the tips? It's not.

The exhaust is slightly different and produces 3hp more over the jdm. Tip size is smaller due to us law according to Toyota.

The jdm one fits the bodywork better but I'm fine with the us one too

You are 100 percent correct....And the FR-S is the same as the BRZ premium except for the premium has HIDs and Navigation. Interior quality is exactly the same.

SUB-FT86 12-24-2011 11:34 AM

That is BS about the tips being to big for the US regulations. The G37 have big tips.

I *think* cars (not trucks) are limited to 3". The JDM ones are ~3.4". I'm sure it's some obscure US or state law causing the change..

I can't find anything specifically from the DOT. I think they probably did it so not to raise the suspicion of cops in states that don't have well defined exhaust laws that require sound level measurement (MA, PA, VA). Big tips on small Japanese car = noise to law enforcement = easy ticket.

Mari0 12-24-2011 01:39 PM

I would have said to reduce the cost (and to be able to charge you for TRD exhausts tips from the stealership), but since the BRZ is the same way, I have to go with what others said before me.

I couldn't find anything either so I assumed it was a retarded state law or maybe canadian law (the USDM car will be the same mechanically as CDM). I've seen Cali people suggest 3" or smaller tips on other forums so I was thinking it was maybe a cali law, but no idea.

The tip is only for looks anyways in this case, the piping is the same, and hell, the JDM one makes less power. It definately looks better in the body work though!

CoryUyede 12-24-2011 02:01 PM

The smaller Tips aren't as good looking as the fuller jdm ones for sure,...but if it SOUNDS better...i'm fine with it:thumbsup:

And yes, i'll take 3hp too!

I'm really waiting for the aftermarket on exhausts, so in the long term it's probably irrelevant to some of us

It's not Cali law, they only restrict sound, not looks. You can have whatever size tip as long as it doesn't sit to too low and noise doesn't exceed 95dB A-weight.

i also read that the USDM version produces 3hp more, but is it confirmed that the increase in power is due to a different exhaust system?

It already costs extra having dedicated USDM exhausts in their parts bin. Adding bigger tips would increase costs even more (btw jdm exhausts just have tips tacked onto the smaller pipe and i'm assuming usdm exhausts terminate w/ the bare pipe w/ no tips tacked on). Could also be a quality control measure for manufacturing by making USDM cars more discernable against JDM and EDM models along the assembly line.

Random fact: The LFA exhaust is actually 2 pipes hiding behind fake triple exhaust tips with a gap in between like IS-F tips.

Here's a better image of the USDM exhaust:

I think it's just a screwed-on tip just like the JDM version as you can see the inner circle of the pipe.

At least the kept the exhaust port big so you can easily fit aftermarket exhausts without melting the rear bumper.
