Drove the 86GT and NC miata back to back on GT5

I have a Logitech G27 with Playseat. Full manual with clutch and H pattern shifter. All driving aid turned off except for ABS which is set to 1. Drove each cars around 10 laps.

Track: Tsukuba Circuit Japan 1.271 miles
Condition: Dry

Roadster RS (NC) 2007: 1:12.067
86GT 2012: 1:08.050

My last lap in the miata was my best at 1:12.067, I was able to do 1:10 on the first lap with the GT86.

Stock, so whatever tires they are on. I guess I should mention they are both stock out of the box.

If they are on different tires, switch one and re-compare for us...

Sport-Tech 12-23-2011 11:41 AM

This post title got me real excited... until I read the last 2 words - "on GT5" :hitcomputer:

They are stock tires on both, that's the whole point of the comparo. Stock vs Stock.

Neutral_Eyes 12-23-2011 11:50 AM

I did the same with the NB '00 to see how my car would compare. Both on sports hard, I was able to pull a 1:09 out of the Miata and a 1:06 out of the 86. Even though I hate Tsukuba, both cars were fun enough to drive and play with for a while.

And the NC Miata comes with comfort softs, so you might want to even out the tires and run them again. They might be easier to drive, but I don't think sports hard are indicative of the performance you'll see from Primacy HPs.

Edit: Where's the media?

Changing the tires would no longer be a stock vs stock comparo. You don't see car magazines change tires on their comparos.

The game's GT86 tires aren't representative of a real life car either. Changing them would at least balance that part out a lot more like real life.

ft86Fan 12-23-2011 01:10 PM

I did the same comparo with a 06 Honda S2000. The S2K comes with comfort soft in stock form so I changed it to sports hard to match the 86. After the change the 2 cars runs almost the same time on two different tracks. I hope this will also hold true in real life.

It's a simulation, and, plus, I don't think anyone is being terribly serious here, anyways. Everyone gets a little antsy. We've been waiting for this car for a long time. Give the guy a break.

miata 01-06-2012 01:40 AM

I want a yellow FRS too!!!

Allow me to express something, because I think it's relevant to your post Andy. This console simulation game, GT5, is also something actual drivers use to learn tracks. Not even that, there's selected people going Professional by going into GT Academy. Look it up.

Then there's iRacing. Which it may not be relevant to the 86 itself. But that game is as real as it gets. With iRacings existence you can't really say "It's a game - it's not real." Because it's digital professional competition.

Ok.... It's still a game and not real... No matter how good it gets it will never be like the real deal. And again it's a video game so yeah we can say it's not real.

RaceR 01-06-2012 11:07 AM

I think everybody will agree that GT5 is a game, and not the real world.
Thats why people refer to it as a simulator. No one here will argue it is not a real car we are driving.
But since we cant drive GT86 in real life, it is the closest thing we come simulating real life. And Iracing is probably the the game with the most accurate physics available to consumers.

Sorry this kinda off topic, but since Squatch86 mentioned GT-Acadamy, Iracing, learning tracks and since this discussion got a little into sim racing and real life.
Id tough some guys might enjoy watching this video.

Dragonitti 01-06-2012 11:56 AM

And that GT5 is the best IRL simulator when it comes to consoles only.

ichitaka05 01-06-2012 12:20 PM

^iirc didn't Top Gear do lil test how those simulation racing game driver can get close to the real driver (or something like that) by bringing one of iRacing champ to racing in F1 (or F3? Can't remember) & TA the. Course & difference between him & the Pro driver was 3 secs or something like that.

Do anyone remember that article?

Squatch86 01-06-2012 02:20 PM

top gear did it at laguna seca with a NSX and a digital NSX on GT4

Yeah, iRacing is serious stuff! If I remember correctly, you can launch your career on iRacing. Hell, look at those in the Signatech Nissan Oreca03. Came straight from a video game, went through GT Academy, now they're racing the Sebring 12 hours, LeMans 24 hours... etc

I wish Sony would design a PS3 that can last 5yrs. Mines died in 1 year.

I just watched this video recently of a guy in a GT5 Miata vs his real Miata at Laguna Seca:
[u2b]7dmiqeTjTKQ[/u2b]

The specs say 137hp/984kg vs. ~100hp (can't imagine it comes out more than 137 on an engine dyno though :/) and 21xx (more than 984kg), I don't think you can look at the 0.003 second difference and say that the simulator is very realistic because of that.

RaceR 01-06-2012 04:39 PM

I have gone trough several. First one lasted near 3 years tough.
But have been unlucky and gotten a crappy "replacement products every time" that broke down in no time. One good thing about Norway. Warranty on stuff like PS3 is basically 5 years. My current "new" 40gb fat edition seems to work fine now tough.. *fingers crossed*
You guys should back up your save game files. Especially from GT5. Not only can your PS3 break down. But your safe file could corrupt. Have happened to several people I know..

You can change the HD to bigger one. That's what I did. I have to 40GB PS3, but after warranty expired, I bought 500GB HD and swap em out w that (of course, I've backup the data w external HD first)

And here's the funny thing. I hardly ever played mines when I got it. I am not a hardcore gamer.

The quality on the PS3 is good in comparison to xbox360. (atleast before, do not know these days).
But PS3s are not as good as some might believe.
As said, I have been trough several. Red light- not starting it, fans going on max speed for no reason, broken blu-ray disc laser.
My two cousins, both of them have to send in their PS3s now.
Have another friend who have one with broken blu-ray disc.

Some of the times when I had gotten a replacement PS3 it only lasted in about 10-50 hours.. (not play time, "on time".
Anyway, some are just unlucky. Some are lucky. Does not always matter how old it is, or how little you play.
What matters tough, is do not go trough several 24h b-spec races without letting it get a break. And be sure that it will have good ventilation when doing stuff like that..

Squatch86 01-06-2012 06:28 PM

PS3's are a lot more bulletproof than an Xbox.. I've had two PS3's in the life span of multiple 360's... which was 15 Xbox360's since 2005.

The old fat PS3's do have their venting issues, then some of the older ones.. YLOD. the Slim, however. Does not. The thing has been on for a week. Not even a stutter. Not even a sound of the fan.

Did 4 days of 24hrs b-spec and still running fine LOL

Wow~ UK is getting crappy PS3 or something? Cuz all my friend never had any problem of their PS3

RaceR 01-07-2012 12:56 PM

UK?
U mean EU, or Norway?
Here in Norway I believe different chain stores gets their PS3s from different places. I know that one of those store chains used to import from another EU country. I highly doubt there is a quality difference around the world. Bad batches on the other hand could be a possibility.
Probably just people being unlucky. My cousins have the new slim version. Most people have no problems with their PS3s.
