Where do you put your smart key?
Where do you put your smart key on your 86?
mine usually ends up in the removable cup holder. it would be nicer if there was an actual place to put it. i dont like to have anything in my pockets in the car, because it might mark the seat or damage some material or foam.. |
Mine stays in the steering column! Hah!

what's this smart key you're talking about? and why do you need to ask where to put a "key"?
|
I put mine in my butt. That way it's always with me. But yeah... FRS doesn't have a smart key.
|
yup i put mine up my bum as well
|
the smart key holder...
... which is also up my bum |
I think he's referring to the fact that there isn't a slot for the key fob for the keyless entry system. Like my other Bimmers, etc. had a slot for the key fob so you can insert it even though you have the keyless entry option. IMHO, it would be redundent to have a slot. I keep it in my pocket.
|
Ok, now the 86 owners are just rubbing it in.
|
Wait, how would putting something in your pocket damage the seat? I think you're not giving your seat enough credit - it's designed to be sat on, it's not made out of some dainty silk lingerie type material - even then, a key fob in your pocket would hardly cause that any harm either.
In any event, use your front pockets, a key fob there shouldn't hurt anything. Or are the seats in the Toyota 86 designed differently and I'm confused by what we have in the US? |
Nothing more boring then pressing a button.
I don't miss that from the Audi. |

"Honey, I can't find my keys!"
"Check your asshole." "Thanks!" |
Push button start is the reason I bought premium over limited. If they added a slot to put your key into you might as well just have a regular key, and AFAIK dont you need to actually touch the key to the handle to unlock the doors? If you came into proximity and it unlocked it would make more sens because you could leave it in your pocket, but if you have to take it out of your pocket to get into the door then again, you might as well just push a button on the fob.

I think i will cut down a stubby holder. and place the key there. i just dont want to hear it rattle around.

When I drive the company's Prius, I put the fob in the door handle. Pri' have those handles that dip in a little which makes it perfect for the newer Pri'.
For your 86, have you thought on creating or installing some sort of pocket in/on your visor? |

Then I dont understand the point of this thread, never take the key out of your pocket, just walk up, get in, push start, drive... I still wouldn't get a limited personally though, I like to get in a car, push in the clutch, and turn a key. Just feels better to me. |

I keep mine in my pocket.
I'm starting to wish the key opened my house as well. Getting tired of taking the keys out every time I have to unlock the door. First world problems. |
I don't understand, isn't the point of the smart key thing to stay in you're pocket. I get that it maybe to too big and uncomfortable. and I guess for women you can just keep it in your purse and throw it on the passenger seat.... I don't know I mean if I had a car key the only place I put it is the ignition.... I ... wow.. gone totally blank in my mind on this topic.

this is by far the least useful topic on the boards.
Bulky??? WTF are you guys talking about you must be some dirty hipsters with girls pants on. My fob will even fit in the standard 5th pocket on my jeans (maybe i'm the minority here because i wear actual men's clothes???) Do you not have house keys or a cell phone? is this really the ONLY thing you HAVE to take out of your pocket when you get in your car and it is a distressing ordeal to have to find a place to put it?? honestly it is barely bigger than a bic lighter....and if you manage to find a way to damage your seats with this device in your pocket (not hanging tangentially out of your posterior strapped with razors) you are doing not just something but literally EVERYTHING wrong. /rant |
Wear it on your neck. LoL

Yes, the smart key is bulky. Yes, there are those of us that are required to wear dress pants everyday to work, school, etc.. Yes, these pants sometimes come very fitted and a key fob stands out in them. There is a reason why Lexus uses a smart key that is flat now in some of it's cars. This is not a new equation. It might be new or different to you but this is normal stuff. If I see any forum member in need and I have a solution (an OEM solution at that) for said need, I will volunteer it. Apparently he isn't the only one that thinks about this as Toyota Motorsports has come up with a trick key fob holder. He might even be able to get Tom's parts OTC in Australia? I'm definitely not cool enough (at all) to be a hipster but thanks for the guess! |

I keep my smart key fob with my home and office keys attached to it in the front right pocket of my suit pants along with my money clip and any loose change I may have. I keep my smart phone all by itself in my front left pocket. My money clip is bulkier than the fob, so I can't really complain about the fob, but the credit card sized smart keys that Lexus and other brands are using looks pretty neat to me. Still wouldn't preclude me from using some kind of key holder though for my keys that I keep in that pocket. |
really
|
The key fob stays in the front pocket of my trousers.
I think the small hole adjacent to the start button is designed to hold the key fob. If the size of the key fob really bothers someone, I don't think it'd be too hard to take it apart, take the chip out and put it into something a lot smaller (and a lot easier to lose). |

and my opinion, as stated still stands, I'm glad you don't like it, if you honestly think a $45 dollar cup that comes with sticky tape is the answer, there is alot we won't see eye to eye on...that is some level 3 JDM fanboi shit right there, that's about $2.35 worth of product Tom's is ripping people off for. and you consider being a hipster an achievement...I guess i should be surprised but somehow i am not. I'm not saying this is something that shouldn't be allowed to be discussed....that's not my place or desire. I was simply airing my opinion that this is a conversation about inconveniences that people are forcing upon themselves, inventing even. there is more than enough room in every garment I own, (that still fit my fat a$$) for this key fob, it is in no way cumbersome or inconvenient to just be left in the pocket and only touched when changing pants or emptying pockets in preparation for removing pants. You would think that the key weighed a couple pounds, had razor sharp edges and was awkwardly shaped....the OP said he was afraid to damage the seats with the key in his pocket.....AFRAID OF DAMAGING THE SEATS.....we are talking about a rounded soft plastic box no larger (and much duller) than a box of tic tacs :thanks: |
:word: Haters gonna hate. Whatevs. Yes, saying Tom's parts are OEM is like saying that TRD, STi, AMG, etc parts are OEM. They are an aftermarket company founded with the support of Toyota to produce parts and cars for Toyota. I am a big fan of OEM parts/accessories and any of the OEM aftermarket arms parts. As is evidenced by my car.
It might not make sense to you but I will still support anyone on this forum with any form of information that they request. Whether I would actually buy it, like it, use it or not. Thanks for your opinion and keep up the good work!! Quote:

Personally, I don't think the key fob is all that bully. It's all the other Damn keys I have linked to it. LOL
This is why when Mercedes Benz first came up with this option on their high end cars like ten years ago they gave you a credit card like transmitter that you kept in your wallet along with your other credit cards. Now that's a great idea! Only thing is I usually take my wallet or anyways because I hate driving for any length of time with a thick wallet in my back pocket. So I guess you just can't win. |

Really? I didn't realize that Tom's was actually an Arm of Toyota, I thought all of the "racing" development occurred within TRD. |
In the keyfob slot in front of the shift knob.
