VIDEO: GRIFFON TRD FT86 CONCEPT, WORK OF ART !

Quote:

The TRD Griffon is made with track day use in mind. Although a bit more power and torque would have been handy, the 2.0-liter boxer engine hasn’t been modified; instead, all efforts in improving the 86 have been focused on weight reduction, chassis reinforcement and racing-spec accessories.

Keeping the original bodywork’s shape, the hood, roof, doors, trunk and rear wing have been replaced by carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts, the front and rear bumpers, wider front wings and rear diffuser are made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and all the glasshouse, except for the windscreen, are made of polycarbonate, all in the name of reducing weight.

The cabin is fitted with Toyota Racing Development-sourced bucket seat, shift knob, ignition button, oil temperature and pressure and water temperature gauges, as well as a Momo steering wheel and Takata seat belts.

Gazoo Racing may have left the flat-four well alone but it has upgraded most other components. The stock car’s Torsen limited-slip differential has been replaced by a TRD mechanical LSD, the front and rear suspension has been reinforced and featues KW shock absorbers and springs and the final gear ratio has been shortened to 4.8:1. There’s also a differential oil cooler and a TRD monobloc caliper kit with the original Brembo brake pads and RAYS 18-inch wheels with Yokohama Advan rubber.

Toyota may claim that the modern-day hachiroku is not about horsepower but pure driver fun, however, truth to be told, there’s no such thing as “enough” power.

MTCRX 02-17-2013 12:04 PM

I love the look, the effort that went into this car, and the fact it is NA. I have watched the track record video a couple of times.. That car sounds so good. This is my favorite race car design so far, and there are many goods ones out there.

Captain Insano 02-17-2013 12:24 PM

Sounds so mean when they rev it.

My favorite 86 thus far. If they were to come out with a TRD 86 that is based on this car, or even just the body became available...I would be in CAR HEAVEN! The Car Gods smiled when they presented this car to the world.

trish07 02-19-2013 03:02 PM

Want it!!! :)

Wes 02-19-2013 03:38 PM

yes correct custom trd header. exhaust system apparently includes the header and everything behind the header.

GT86drifter 02-19-2013 04:14 PM

its full titanium header back

It's also rolling on full blown slicks.

Oh not saying that. :) Horsepower is only part of the equation.

TRD then took the GT 86 Griffon out to the Tsukuba circuit and laid rubber to tarmac, netting a best lap time of 1:01.872.

That may seem like nothing on paper, but when you start adding in the fact that time beats out times of the Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari 360 CS, Nissan GT-R Spec-V, Corvette ZR1, Lambo Gallardo, Porsche 911 GT2, and so on, you realize that this must be one beastly `Yota GT 86.
Full race tires are a hell of a drug. I know that many of those cars have -really- aggressive summer tires on them, but there is still a big difference between a DOT max performance summer tire and a slick racing tire.

I'd be much more interested in what the car would do on a max performance summer tire.

That said, still impressed.

That's what I was getting at with my comments. Tires go a LONG way compared to an increase in HP. So, just because a Ferrari is putting up 5xxhp numbers, if it's on street tires vs a lower hp car and super light....Full Racing Slicks can bridge the HP gap.

SnapOv3st3r 02-20-2013 01:22 PM

And should you come up to a situation of a Modded lower class car vs. a Stock higher class one, a majority of the time, the Modded lower class car will be faster.

HKS put down a time of 1:07 all they had was exhaust, rims, max performance street tires, stripped the car's weight down. But still missing a smaller final drive, headers (good headers go a long way on our cars). Also they didn't do lap after lap chasing the best time

That's great, let's all try to find the twist that minimizes the accomplishments. Wouldn't want to support or hear of anyone's successes. The car made some great runs with minimal improvements. The car was on a race track so it makes sense to use racing slicks. And besides, because racecar! This is a good accomplishment and yes other cars will be faster, etc. but take this for what it is. These people are finding out what it takes to make these car faster and handle better, and minimal change is the route to go. I for one am taking notes. Nice Job Griffin/TRD.

6sec slower is a HUGE time in racing. HKS had more HP to boot. Hence HP is a small part of what makes fast lap times. They ran more than one lap for that 1:07.

Stitch welded chassis is not minimal, but everything else I would say so.
