make your own axleback?

as much as i love the companies that build stuff for our cars, ive never been one to spend $800 on some pipes that we can weld together at the shop for $200. i found that old firebirds and camaros have the single in dual out flow styling of our mufflers and magnaflow, flowmaster and such sell them as a universal. flowmaster has a poor flow design with lower cfm when compared so i wouldnt go with them personally. But magnaflow is straight thru and $100 for it. Add a few mandrel bends and tips and its surly less then whats out now. this idea is based off the the tests showing a muffler delete making more power then catbacks. correct me if this wrong but just sharing thoughts

I'd imagine you could definitely build one for less. Most dont have the resource or motivation to do so.. Its physically easier to throw $$ at it vs building from scratch.

I say go for it! Cant be worse than the factory muffler.. ;)

Grip Ronin 02-13-2013 12:13 AM

ya im really just trying to reduce the stock mufflers restriction at a reasonable price. this isnt my track car so why go crazy lol

usptwins 02-13-2013 12:30 AM

Just don't do anything "red-necked"..... please... Make sure it all lines up and is absolutely perfect....

Xdragonxb0i 02-13-2013 12:41 AM

I have a. Accelerated performance exhaust and mid pipe. That use a magna flow exhaust. It quiet like stock. Until you get o. The gas and it sounds mean

chutrain 02-13-2013 01:08 AM

You can get a catback Flowmaster for under $500 shipped. Is it worth the hassle of sourcing the parts and then having the pipes bent?

You can order mandrel bends.. If I had a chop saw and a welder I would have gone this route the day i picked up my car lol.

That flowmaster link says noticeable interior resonance.

Honestly though, I'm not a fan of any of the systems that use the stock routing.. from what i have seen center in side outs make noticeably more power than side in side outs probably due to either fewer bends before the muffler or less internal muffler resistance.

FrX 02-13-2013 06:22 AM

I have an SRT catback currently, and I plan to modify it some to suite my preferences a bit more. Going to re-work the mounting some to get it to line up better and add another resonator or two to quiet some of the drone. Probably also going to get rid of the slip joints and convert it to v-bands.

Unfortunately my welding equipment was stolen a couple months ago... So, I need fix up that situation first.

FR-S Matt 02-13-2013 06:54 AM

If you haven't heard the flowmaster on this car, it's probably in the bottom on the list of exhausts. Definitely up there in the worst sounding on this engine.

If you want a real TIG welded axleback, look at Nameless for $550. It is light, has an outstanding design and is built by an engineer, not a local exhaust shop fabricator.

Ya I see what your saying. The flowmaster is just walls like a little maze. Not ideal for power

So your basicly building your own exhaust. Woulda been cheaper to do that from the start lol.

500 $ on a nameless catback or just 200$ for home built piping. Leaves me 300 $ for more upgrades.

Shit Luck 02-13-2013 05:26 PM

i like the nameless aswell but its ugly :confused0068:... i know you cant see it on the car but i know its there... i might build my own as well. magnaflow race muffler and single exit to save weight.

a single would be lighter and way easier to fab but no way to cover the other hole. im kinda getting use to the quiet daily so i dont want to go as loud as a straight thru single.

Doesn't need it if you keep stock cats and resonators. Not loud at all.

srtblake 02-13-2013 10:12 PM

pretty shitty for the price that members paid for their cars that they cant justify buying an axleback from a vendor here and support local business and keep the middle class employed................

Terrible argument. This is not an expensive car. Most of us are not rolling in dough...if you have the equipment and skills, why would you not build your own system? Enjoy giving away your money???

Hardrock4445 02-13-2013 10:21 PM

Whats the matter don't have the skill to make your own?

Exactly. I'm all for supporting the vendors. But only when they provide something I can't do or make myself. I love my Perrin exhaust, but if I could, I would have made my own.

or a $28k calibersrt4, $60ksrt8charger/challenger/300M$70kgrandcherokeesrt8...yeah your right.

I mean, why pay someone to build a motor or install a part when I can just open my toolbox......

same principal right.

Neons have always been good performers. The SRT-4's were fun as hell...

For some reason, I have a feeling you were a complete joy to work with...\sarcasm

neons, just like pt cruisers have a cult like following. Although I will never understand it, it does exist.

tell me, how cute is your scion? :w00t:

Shit Luck 02-13-2013 10:35 PM

never had any problem at work other than dumb kids hanging refridgerator sized intercoolers on a car that doenst need it and then bitching that it runs like shit.

Grip Ronin 02-14-2013 09:20 PM

well that escalated quickly lmao. theres more important things in life then spending all your money in car parts, its bad enough we replace half the car before its even broken in. plus id rather fabricate it, makes the car different and you can get exhaust notes that no one can identify
