I bought my BRZ/FR-S, but I almost bought...

Whatsup everybody? just a fun/interesting query to see what you passed up to get your current baby! I got my black FR-S without even hearing or seeing any advertisement about it, my best friend was the one who gave me the tipoff. Drove it, then found the one I wanted and that was that! moving on...

I was really going to get into the 370z or the 3.8 Genesis, even considered the GTI or rx8. But imo the front end of the z turned me off ever since someone called it catfish like I cant get the image out of my head! the car drives amazing but it didnt give me a a drivers chub like the frs. the genesis... well it was great but idk hyundai still does some things im not too fond of, great car tho. Gti drives nice but F a hatchback, and lastly i didnt drive the rx8 because I sort of fell out of love with the styling. Heard great things tho. Im almost at 6k miles on my FRS and hot damn do I still take the long route everywhere I go haha. LOVE IT!

EDIT: you know i forgot about the civic si, i drove it and it felt like really sluggish to me, also the interior was pretty whack. I really wanted to love it too because I LOVE HONDA! and the accord coupe didnt do it for me either.
Another thing I also didnt even consider anything american. I just have a stigma against american cars for whatever reasons, like they will just always have issues. Obviously they have drastically improved with time, how do the mustangs and camaros handle these days? I might go test drive one so im not a total ignorant Americanmobile hater lol.

SO! What did you pass by to get into the 86 family?

zaptorque 02-11-2013 03:33 PM

I was strongly considering the Bugatti Veyron, or Ferrari 458 Spider.....

but then I looked at my bank account

Chimpo 02-11-2013 03:33 PM

I was shopping around for a nice WRX or an STi. I'm honestly excitied about the inevitable when I have to get rid of my FR-S and get a more practical car... with a turbo, AWD, and a hatch.... :party0030:

rapidcars 02-11-2013 03:34 PM

Nothing. Wasn't in the market for a new car and didn't plan on one for at least a few more years. I had been following it for a while and found myself drooling over one at the dealership and placed an order a few days later without even a test drive. No regrets.

Wait are you serious? Turbo is more practical? thats sucks man imo you should enjoy the frs I LOVE IT haha. but i can see all the reasons why youd want something else.

Practical from a "useful space" point of view. Gonna have a kid some day and would like the extra space.

Same here... my 94 integra was still running good but I can feel the compression on the motor weak.. almost 300k on it.. was time to get a new one this time..:burnrubber:

naikaidriver 02-11-2013 03:50 PM

I was looking at a Nismo 370Z or the Camaro 2SS. I considered the Hyundai Genesis Coupe for a while but I couldn't get past the ugly front end.

From the first time I saw the FRS's concept car, I was intrigued... when I saw it in person, I was in love... when I drove it, I married it. Its been all honeymoon ever since!

NOT MY KIDS JUST GOOGLED THE PICS

MVJ1975 02-11-2013 03:52 PM

I looked pretty hard at the V6 Mustang, but ultimately found them too big for my tastes. They're great cars, especially for the price, I just like smaller cars.

Rayme 02-11-2013 03:54 PM

I was looking at civic SI's and a turbo genesis...and even a CR-Z.

SalM 02-11-2013 03:57 PM

I tried to let it roll over me and picked the FRS up instead, but I cant. I'm going back to my original plan of an E92 M3, or a Full bolt on with Meth 335i which is insanely fast for the money.

whaap 02-11-2013 03:59 PM

I probably would have bought my third Miata. It was the only model of a car that I ever bought more than just one. I really think highly of them but I think even higher of my FR-S and will never regret buying it.

norsamerican 02-11-2013 04:01 PM

was looking for an STI swapped Gc8 then i get a call from a friend whos a service advisor..next day it was mine

DarkSunrise 02-11-2013 04:03 PM

- Cayman S (used)
- Evo X GSR
- Mustang GT brembo
- 370z

Those were my other top choices, ranked in order I enjoyed driving them. Glad I went with the FR-S though.

HunterGreene 02-11-2013 04:04 PM

I was looking at either a Mustang GT or Subaru WRX. As soon as the FR-S was announced, though, it was no going any other direction.

ravenblackfrs 02-11-2013 04:06 PM

Went to dealership to get a oil filter for my X Runner, waited for them to look at something on my truck, walking around I started looking at it... first time I'd ever seen it. Sat down in it, and was HOOKED! Came back the next day to pick up parts I ordered for truck, and asked for the money back on parts as I signed for the car. #noregrets

B L U E S L A T E 02-11-2013 04:12 PM

Ford Focus ST, Nissan 370Z, BMW 135i, Honda S2000 CR, and Porsche Cayman S.

Besides the Focus ST, everything was used.

Orthow 02-11-2013 04:13 PM

Only people short enough to fit comfortably in the backseat! LoL

I honestly didn't even think child seats would be an option. :eyebulge:

campy 02-11-2013 04:16 PM

I was seriously close to buying a '94 RX7 r1. I turned it down because I needed something that would be reliable as an only car, and the 3rd gen RX7s were horribly unreliable. I also looked at the Dodge Challenger, but with those the v8 is the only way to get them, and those were too much money. The FRS was an impulse buy, but now that I look back on it, I can't think of any other car I would prefer over it.

Almost bought a ford f150 with the money also.

hahahaha I was at the service department doing the stupid steering wheel airbag recall and ended up signing it away on a trade in towards the fr-s before the service was even done :happyanim:

strat61caster 02-11-2013 04:22 PM

Number 2 on my "new car" list was the Fiat Abarth, felt I would be disappointed a few years down the road due to inherent limitations in the vehicle (FWD, Tall, big hole in the back) whereas the FRS would keep me happy for a long time coming.

Number 1 on my "slightly used car list" was a Cayman, but couldn't bear the thought of something so new being abused by someone else with unforeseen costs down the road.

Mustang felt like a truck and I hate convertibles (no Miata/S2000), already crossed off hot hatches as leaving me disappointed in the future, FRS turned out to be the winner based on what I was looking for.

Saber_TRD 02-11-2013 04:26 PM

I passed up the FR-S for an '09 Cobalt SS Turbo. No, I didn't get that backwards.

mit_peid 02-11-2013 04:30 PM

Wasn't really in the market for a new car, but once I saw a few on the street and reading/hearing all the rave reviews, I did a Scion/Yokohama test drive event at the Home Depot Center and immediately fell in love with it. Also briefly looked into the WRX and although I liked/wanted the WRX too, the styling of the FRS and the better fuel-economy won me over easily.

beesmiff07 02-11-2013 04:36 PM

Ive beem eyeballing the FRS for the last 6 months....now im digging the gen 3.8...it has the interior and HP that I really want...we'll see.

Was considering either a new Mustang GT, a used Evo IX, or the FRS. Passed on the idea of the used Evo, since you never know how well the previous owner treated it, and I didn't want to get caught in another vicious cycle of repairing other people's mistakes. Passed on the Mustang after I sat in it. Just hated the interior, and couldn't get past it. Just way too boring for me...to flat/angular, and too cheap feeling/looking. Also, both of the alternatives wouldn't have been any improvement on gas mileage, which was something I was looking for, at least to an extent.

husker741 02-11-2013 04:48 PM

My dad and I just decided to go test drive one after golfing one day, and that was it. Now a few months later, my Whiteout MT is on order. :) I also looked at the CT 200h F-Sport, but there is no power in that car and I couldn't stand the CVT. Other than that, it was maybe an IS250 AWD.

I see you had the recessed grille to. I almost had my xrunner paid off... owed less the $6k.... I do wish I still had a truck, but for work purposes and loading stuff in the back, but just about everyone in my family has a truck. I have an 06 Matrix XRS as my work daily driver car.... and its about to be paid off. I might try to go find me a small tacoma just to have one. Not anything worth spending a whole lot of money on, but to just have something that works for loading gear I cant fit in my car. 4 door tacoma would be nice.

kykiee 02-11-2013 04:54 PM

I had a wide range of cars that I was looking to get. I was going to get the Scion FR-S(had a deposit down for one), but I got my hands on a BRZ Limited instead =D

1st Gen MS3, new MS3, WRX(New), STI(Used), GTI, G37, Audi A4(Used), BMW 135i(Used), Lexus IS350(Used), Lexus CT200H, Genesis Coupe 3.8, Civic SI

fenixv8 02-11-2013 05:03 PM

Used Cayman or used Sti

How about, "I bought my BRZ, but I almost bought engine upgrades for my car?"

Cobalt SS turbocharged is nice, but torque steer gets real annoying. That and the horrible overall quality of the vehicle. Not to mention the body roll/flex.

I almost bought a Nismo 370, but the dealer refused to budge on the price.

Had a deposit for an Scion FR-S Asphalt MT. Still shopping around, almost put a deposit down for an Golf R, was only able to test drive the GTI and R review with various car magazines were pretty bad all around. Also the Golf VII was going to be released soon.

Looked at Cadillac CTS and was waiting for the ATS. Was looking at a used (certified pre-owned) CTS-V sports wagon. If this was in black or white, I would of bought it but it was my least favorite candy red.

A little bird whispered me that he saw a SWP BRZ at a Subaru dealer near by. I stopped by, signed papers and drove off.

Freeman 02-11-2013 05:55 PM

I passed on a 2012 Camaro 2SS with the RS package. It just didn't do it for me.

Chaetagnath 02-11-2013 06:01 PM

I was looking at the veloster turbo. then I saw the FRS and knew I had to have one.

At the price for one of those ($39k)...yeah, I'd turn that down too.

Spaceywilly 02-11-2013 06:13 PM

Nothing actually... I wasn't really looking to get a new car but I couldn't pass up the BRZ.

Body roll/flex? Not sure what Cobalt SS Turbo you were driving but, that's not the case with mine or my friend's supercharged one either. The other Cobalts have those issues, but not the top end versions due to an upgraded suspension. As for quality, it's better than the Cavalier it replaced (I still have my Celica too) and quite frankly on par to my Celica.

Comparing it to the FR-S, the Cobalt has more features, not all the ones I wanted, but it was much cheaper. 15k vs 27k for a new FR-S here. Not to mention the performance that comes with the the SS turbo. More power than the FR-S, Brembo brakes stock, the sport suspension on the SS. I won't go BRZ due to the only Suby dealership within a 2 hour radius has been charged for so many counts of fraud I won't touch the place. It will do until I find what I want.

You got me on the torque steer though, it is annoying, but manageable. Still fun to drive, can't wait for the snow to melt completely and pavement to dry.
