The curse strikes again

Got a ton of snow in RI and the parking lot for my apartment wasn't very plowed yesterday morning. A moron driving a RI state shuttle bus (RIPTA RIde for people familiar with RI) decided it was still a good idea to drive into the parking lot to drop someone off instead of just dropping them off on the plowed main street I live on. My parking space is directly in front of my bedroom window, and of course that's where the bus got stuck in the snow. Moron driver was doing the "rocking" technique but either didn't realize or didn't care that his back bumper was scraping my BRZ's rear bumper. After the bus got pulled out by a RIPTA utility truck, this is what I found:

None of that black stuff is mud or dirt. It's the bumper material with all its paint scraped off.

Is the damage just on the bumper? Hopefully you can get it replaced and that will be the end of it.

EvilBeaverFace 02-11-2013 11:58 AM

I don't think insurance companies look well upon hit and runs or other drivers not having insurance. Or do they?

I hope you got some information from them. If you didn't I would call right away, ask what driver was driving the route that day, get the vehicle info so they can confirm there is scrapings of your car on it. Basically, make someone else responsible (because they are, and might try to avoid it).

Luckily I've never been put in that situation, that's just what I've heard. Either way I hope you get this resolved without your rates going up (or this being counted against you and next time they would go up), that would suck.

It's just damage to the bumper. No scratches or anything on the trunk lid (thank god).

The bus driver's supervisor was there when they pulled the bus out. He took pictures of the damage and a picture of my license plate before I went outside to confront them. I called the local police department and had an accident report written up. RIPTA knows they're at fault and intend to make things right. Could have been a lot worse (more damage, hit and run, etc), but it still sucks that it happened when I just picked the car up two weeks ago and it has a little less than 400 miles on it. Ugh!

HunterGreene 02-11-2013 12:12 PM

Urge to kill...rising....

Seriously, though, find out the route and call RIPTA, tell them what happened and that you have the pictures of the damage. Find out which bus it was, and try to ask if you can get a chance to see it (highly doubtful). Tell them that you witnessed this happening, and then tell them that you will be informing the insurance company of their liability. Bumper damage is no joke. You don't know what happened inside the bumper.

Edit: missed your post up there. Glad that RIPTA is going to take care of you. They probably have insurance for BS their moron drivers do.

That's definitely good to hear then. I'm pretty sure it'll make your life a lot easier. Still sucks I know, but you're right when you say could have been worse.

What did the driver say? Didn't see or hear anything?

Marcoscrdo 02-11-2013 12:38 PM

Every weeks seems to be a new story :(

fjcruiser 02-11-2013 12:46 PM

Glad the bus company is claiming responsability but that's still a nasty as you will have to leave your car for repair for a few days and it affects the value of your car at the end of the day as it has been damaged.I guess you cannot park anywhere else can you ?

Turbowned 02-11-2013 05:37 PM

That's it! When I get my BRZ it's never leaving the garage!

Oh wait, that would suck. God, I hate inconsiderate people!

I didn't realize how unstable it was until it was until 12:00 at night saw that it collapsed and trudged through 3 feet of snow to reach it haha

Turbowned 02-12-2013 01:05 PM

Awww, shit man! That really sucks. I thought about that too, 'cause I have a friend with a whole makeshift garage setup in his "collapsible" garage.

foxhu 02-12-2013 11:59 PM

I filed a claim with my insurance company (Geico), but I told them I don't intend to have them pay for the repairs because I am 100% not at fault since the car was parked at the time of the accident. My insurance won't go up because of this.

I've filed a claim with RIPTA myself (they're self insured), who told me to get a quote and they'd pay for it to be fixed. The quote I got from my dealer's collision shop is $1033 to replace the bumper and the reinforcement bar. Supposedly the collision shop was just built a few years ago and the service staff are really good, so we'll see how the new bumper looks after it's fixed.

Gunna have to bother Rick @ Unique Car Care to opti-coat my new bumper too, lol.

Actually, I think that phrase may have originated with Homer Simpson...

Damnit, can't find a youtube clip.

jstn 02-13-2013 04:41 PM

Glad they're at least being up front about taking care of it. That's a bill you don't want. I backed mine into a stupid decorative boulder a couple of weeks ago and had to get a new rear bumper. My insurance covered it, but the total cost to replace/repaint the rear bumper, reverse light, and part of the exhaust was just under $2k.

Anyway, just be glad it wasn't your fault and isn't going to cost you anything out of pocket. Could be worse - you could be an idiot like me and have no one to blame but your own failure to pay attention. :)

That'll buff out.

Well, it's been a while since someone posted pictures of horror and that the 'Curse' had struck again. I think it was just lurking, waiting patiently, abiding its time until spring arrived...........

Attachment 34812

Attachment 34813

Now you're probably all wondering why the heck is there a picture of an 02 WRX here...it's not a twin and it's under the 'Curse' thread..............

Here's why.......................uh-huh..............

Attachment 34814

No one injured......wheels were on the car less than 9 hours when a deer decided it was time to cross the road and car got off the road trying to avoid it and slid through the grass and into an orchard and ended up under 2 peach trees.

HunterGreene 04-22-2013 10:44 AM

Great, so the curse carries over to the parts now...

White64Goat 04-23-2013 09:00 AM

Kind of reminds me of "The Tingler".

Vincent Price stars as Dr. Chapin, a scientist who discovers a caterpillar-like parasite that grows in the human spine when someone is afraid. Unless the victim screams, the parasite can grow large enough to be deadly. He solemnly dubs this creature the tingler. The owner of a nearby cinema befriends the doctor. His deaf-mute wife suddenly receives all sorts of shocks, like the sight of a bathtub full of blood with a hand reaching out from it. Since she can't scream, she dies, and Chapin gets his hands on her oversize tingler. When it eventually escapes inside the movie theater, the film within the film, and then the film itself, stops for an announcement from Price, out of character, urging the audience to scream their heads off.

Everybody scream................!!:confused0068:

Since my thread got bumped.. lol.

The BRZ's rear bumper got replaced at the end of February after a little frustration. RIPTA only has one guy that does claims (no idea why it's only one person) so it took forever to actually put in a claim. He didn't want to pay to replace the reinforcement bar, but the shop and I pretty much told him to suck it up because the car was two weeks old and parked when it happened. Then the Subaru warehouse in MA sent a front bumper to the shop instead of a rear bumper. So in the end, I had to deal with a Hyundai Accent for 4 days, and my god is it a dreadful car.

But I've had the BRZ back for a couple months now. Rear bumper looks just like the original, no variation in color from the rest of the car. I can't see any overspray so I'm guessing it was painted separate from the car, which is amazing because the paint matches perfectly. Had Rick @ Unique Car Care apply opti-coat to the new rear bumper a couple days after I got it back too, so it's just like new again!
