Range on a tank of Gas!

Lets be fair we all know that Cal has some of the worst gas around, but even with running Mobil or Chevron and not really being abusive with the right foot (3000RPM shift point) 50/50 freeway/surface. Cruising at 75 on the highway I am getting about 250 miles from full tank (no top off, clicks and done) to gas light does this sound normal or should I be getting more?

***NOT FOR COMPARISON!***
I know it is a NA car but my full cattless stage 2 STI was getting 230 miles from a tank... just does not seem to add up

thoughts?

jshadeck 02-08-2013 06:10 PM

"Per tank" is not a good comparison between two different cars.. I believe stis have 18gallon tanks? And the frs is 13? So if both cars got 30mpg the sti would see 540 miles and the frs 390 miles...

true I know, it does just seem a tad off though, but I would like to see what others are getting

Khánh 02-08-2013 06:21 PM

i get around 250 also

jshadeck 02-08-2013 06:21 PM

Based on the math i should avg about 350 per tank, but i rarely go below a half unless im on a long trip. Im actually headed upstate tomorrow morning, ill try to remember to reset my trip and to not have too much fun lol. Ill let u know what i see. Just for the record is urs stick or auto? And is your driving 50/50 city/highway?

mezdup 02-08-2013 06:24 PM

I get about 260/270 to E. But I usually fill up by quarter and by then I have around 220.

yes 50/50 city and highway
yes 6MT BRZ Limited ;)

and thanks for running a trip for SCIENCE! HAHA

Tylub 02-08-2013 06:34 PM

i get 340-380 on avg.

most I ever got was like 420 something

jshadeck 02-08-2013 06:35 PM

K. Mines 6mt frs. Same specs then.

ozne99 02-08-2013 06:36 PM

The most I did was about 335 miles to the tank, which consisted of about 80% freeway miles. My average tank is roughly 285 or so.

According to Fuelly, I've been averaging 26.6 MPG.

Not bad, I guess. I don't drive to save gas, nor do I drive to be fast.

chimmay 02-08-2013 07:04 PM

i got 353 to E. 95% of my drive is freeway.

Asphaltfrs1 02-08-2013 07:17 PM

Most I've gotten was 340, it took 11.5 gallons refill.
Right now I'm a little under 1/4, and have 302 on the trip meter

KGFRS86 02-08-2013 07:29 PM

I only get about 180 miles max before it's time to fill up....my commute is heavy stop and go traffic and lots of traffic lights, 20 miles each way 5 days a week.

Usually when it's time to fill up it's about $38-$40 worth.

subiestar 02-08-2013 09:53 PM

I got 275 going to Vegas before my tank hits quarter. I always fill up at quarter tank.

marky 02-08-2013 11:33 PM

i get 280.. ill try and get a better accurate when i fill up again... darn gas is 4.29 a gallon:mad0259: time to coast and shift 2/3k

how much you guys paying for a gallon of gas in your area ?

crank 02-08-2013 11:41 PM

@marky about the same I am in Diego too

SilentAngel 02-09-2013 01:40 AM

Most of my commute is city, but i never go under a quarter tank, usually get about 170 miles, most i've gotten would be about 280 from a mostly highway trip. i an avg of about 8 gallons every time i fill up. Granted i don't usually try saving gas when i drive lol.

There are a couple of other threads on this if you want more info on it.

On the highway, straight cruise, I have no problem getting over 400+ Miles out of a tank, usually refilling right before or right after the fuel light comes on at speeds between 65 and 79MPH (depending on the highway). When cruising, I typically always drive 9MPH over the speed limit, and never over 80 (Georgia and surrounding states have super speeder laws that kick in at 80MPH).

In general I have averaged 321 Miles between fill-ups, including a few partial fill-ups based on traveling.

Full history of my fuel usage is in the top post of my Owner's Journal.

Oh, and I DO NOT have a light foot or hypermile the car.

Mickeyt86 02-09-2013 02:50 PM

I drove from Albuquerque to Seattle and averaged around 100 miles per quarter. One fill-up I tried to see how far I would go on the light and made it 146 miles after the light came on! Made it right to the gas station and didn't want to chance it any further.

This was a very economical driving mode on about 98% HWY

littlefoot 02-09-2013 06:13 PM

I get 285-317 miles per tank. The lower range is on the wknds and the higher is mon-fri commuting to work but i consistently get 300 per tank using top tier gas. I always fillup when my light comes on.

illmatic 02-09-2013 09:38 PM

I also get 290-310 miles per tank with the ECM recall. I also stopped using fuel with E10.

nice.. where in SD? never seen a blue BRZ yet on dark gray one and couple colors of FRS

ImperiousRex 02-09-2013 11:46 PM

When my car was fully stock - I was getting about 320 miles per tank and filling up when the low fuel light would pop on. (~11-11.5 gallons) I was driving pretty conservatively - 3000-3500rpm shifts, coasting when I could, maintaining roughly 75mph on freeway.

After I switched to Dunlop Star Spec tires on the stock rims I dropped about 40 miles per tank (~3mpg). Before the tire switch I never really paid much attention to the term "low rolling resistance" with my tires but grip comes at a cost and seeing my mpg drop this much from a simple tire swap was eye opening.

If you've swapped tires, this may be something to consider if you're worried about fuel economy.

Really? Whats the technique.. I've ran it till the low fuel light comes up, but not sure now in days how much is left till I go dry. Is it still 1 gallon left when low fuel light comes on?

Anyways well, I've been pulling the 3k shift points slow braking and I got 333 on my last. I also cruise control at 70mph.. Is there a sweet spot mph on this vic yet?

crank 02-10-2013 12:02 AM

I am not worried about fuel eco honestly I am just worried something might be wrong with my car if I am getting what seems to be such a low tank range...

again stock tires, 6MT, 75 on the freeways 50/50 split

I drove 68mph and avoid down shifting and just power through the 6th gear when I'm grannying the car

it's extremely boring and I don't recommend it unless you want every last MPG :bonk:

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that EPA numbers are estimates and are derived by testers who baby the car. Hence, maximizing their fuel economy.

My experience with my BRZ has been all over the place. When I drive mostly city (heavy stop n go) I've seen averages at 23 to 24 mpg. When I went on a long hwy trip I've seen averages at 37 to 38. Those are all when I'm really trying to maximize fuel economy. Now what I've learned is that our cars drink substantially more gas when you get a little bit heavy footed with the go pedal. When I drive aggressive, I've seen averages as low as 20 to 21 mpg. Of course, there is a big difference between driving with fuel economy in mind and driving aggressively, but I've noticed that if you drive these cars like it was designed to be driven you will nowhere near see EPA estimates. Not even close! The positive side to this is that if you do drive with fuel economy in mind you can, at least, get near the stated EPA estimates.

Interesting, because I guess it depends on what you mean by "driving aggressively". I'm always the first one away from the light, and rarely take an exit ramp where I'm not having to brake because of traffic ahead. I usually downshift into the power band anytime I'm changing lanes or passing, and am usually running 5 to 9MPH over the speed limit.

I am still running the OEM tires which may account for some of it, and while I do commute in traffic my average speed is probably in the 45-50MPH range even though there is a quite a bit of stop and go.

Just shows how much it can vary from one situation to the next.

zoomzoomers 02-10-2013 05:04 PM

Also, I have a few bolt on mods on my car and who knows what effect they've had. I've read somewhere that some people have stated they're fuel economy going up with bolt ons but I do not think that is the case with me. I haven't taken a before and after measurement, but I'm pretty certain that I've lost some mileage after my bolt ons.
