"Come Race Me Bro" Encounters

Seems like I've been getting alot of "challenges" on the road since I've bought my BRZ, specifically with Camaro drivers. On 2 separate occasions while I was driving on the highway, I've had a guy in a Camaro zoom past me, slow down to be side by side with my car, rev his engine, and then speed off again. Not sure what it is about these kids in Camaros.

Post some of your encounters you've had!

7thgear 02-08-2013 11:19 AM

you're in america, that's the problem

;)

norsamerican 02-08-2013 11:21 AM

mustangs, camaros, chargers, big lifted diesel trucks..they just rev and launch at the lights...then again im in west texas so its to be expected.

Its fun to rev back then when the light turns green jump off the line then just slip it into second and watch them tear off while i accelerate normally...not even worth my time.

CSG Mike 02-08-2013 11:27 AM

But, but, we pull on automatic v6 camaros if you start at the right speed!

neutron256 02-08-2013 11:31 AM

This is what I think of when people keep wanting to race me.

Another case of the American muscle cars vs imports. This will never change.

Accurate Race Shop 02-10-2013 01:35 AM

This car is still new normally American cars know they have me beat and don't waste the gas other imports normally are the ones that go all rev crazy. I love to race my car but only on the track if they want to prove they are better than me they can prove it on the track.

Had a Mustang mess with me today.... Followed me to my street... It was creepy.

was385 02-10-2013 12:18 PM

I've had one Veloster turbo try it, one mustang, and probably 6-7 Nissan 350 or 370z.

When I'm in the 911s I get way more. That car just brings out the testosterone. I almost never respond, but when I see someone like a Scion TC or a Kia crossover revving their engine or screwing around with me on the highway, I just have to show them how stupid it is.

Turbowned 02-10-2013 12:51 PM

OP is from New Jersey... complains about Camaros racing him...

What kinda Camaros are we talking here, IROC-Z's?

Even here we have just as many people doing it, albeit more imports doing the flyby's.

GMU-BRZ 02-10-2013 12:58 PM

Definitely had this issue with Nissan/Infiniti 350/370 drivers.

Supersonics 02-10-2013 01:02 PM

Haven't had anyone try to race me yet, just a couple of people speeding up from behind to take a look. Can't blame them for trying to race you, these cars look fast even sitting still.

kertong 02-10-2013 01:06 PM

It was pretty shocking to see the change in attitude - I come from driving C6 vettes, and porsches mostly, and I never got revved on. 2nd day out in the BRZ, some ghetto ass hispanic dude in a beat up SN95 mustang was just revving on me at a left turn red light (wtf?)

Ironically, I used to be one of these dumbasses in my younger days. All I cared about was 1/4 mile, so the LT1 Z28 was the logical choice for me. Worked on it myself and had it with an LT4 "hot" cam, 1.6RRs, headers, hiflo cat, exhaust, tuning, electric WP, the whole shebang - good for 12.9@106-108mph. Nobody revved on me.

Sadly, I'd see "nicer" cars, and I have to confess - when I saw the new S2000s hit the road, I liked them but could not admit it as it ran completely opposite of my "go fast with big V8s" dogma. I'd race them and "smoke" them just to convince myself that I had the better car and that I shouldn't lust after the S2000 (or whatever other hot car was out at the time)

So, if some kid in some shitty camaro/mustang is revving on you, take it as a kind of car-freudian slip. They feel threatened and need to protect their precious and fragile ego. They are too young to realize it most of the time but they are showing their slip.

As for me, I am so f*cking glad I got out of that scene. Don't get me wrong, nothing puts a smile on my face like a <5 second 0-60, but there's a reason I sold my C5Z06 and C6 1LT to get an S2000 (which I eventually traded in for a lotus elise, then a boxster S).

Can't go back, myself. :)

fatoni 02-10-2013 01:45 PM

i feel like two encounters hardly qualifies as "a lot of challenges...specifically camaros"

Ahernandez0909 02-10-2013 01:50 PM

I wish this thread was longer. I love the stories. I raced like a mother.... At 18 when my brother let me drive his Acura TL-S. then at 19 I got an e46 325i, not too fast but beautiful. Now I'm 20 and got the FRS last month. My dad told me that this car s gonna get a bunch of opportunities to race but ignore them. I knew it would be bad but not THIS bad: my dad was teaching me how to drive stick shift with my frs and on the way home we see a Lexus IS250 fly by us at like 80 on a 45. He slows down until we get next to him and he starts flashing his lights. My dad said "I told you." And the Lexus sped like a mofo. My dad ignored it and said, "when I was your age I raced my fiat spyder like there was no tomorrow, so I know how you feel... But resist the urge." The next week some 2013 Civic (not SI) pulls up next to me at a stop light and revs his loud ass rice maker exhaust and I laugh my ass off. He floored it on green and I'm dying laughing. Another stop light comes up and he lowers his window yelling at me to race him. I rev my little boxer and he laughed then I took off at the green with him and I destroyed him. I put my hazards on and slowed down for him to come say something but he got behind me and slowed down even more. I sped up to speed limit and he stayed at his slow ass pace eventually turning away somewhere.

Yes, immature and stupid, but totally worth it... I won't be racing on the public roads anymore ;)

Synack 02-10-2013 02:17 PM

There's virtually zero point in drag racing the FR-S/BRZ; unless you're heavily modified.

Sean-SRM 02-10-2013 02:24 PM

No hassle with my FR-S but whenever I am on my bike I am constantly being raced without knowing it.

tnt 02-10-2013 02:44 PM

hey I had a guy in a porshe cayman reving me ... guess that's an honor hahaha

wallace03 02-10-2013 02:44 PM

I tend not look around me at stop lights, but the week after i picked up my brz, a Chrysler 300c next to me peeled off at a light. i guess he wanted to race? i wasn't aware though. A couple of weeks ago a Charger with paper plates came up behind me quickly on the freeway so i moved over to the right to let him pass, and he just cruised next to me for about a mile. The windows were tinted, but i could see two guys in there. They werent really making eye contact or revving, so im assuming they were checking out my car and wishing they would have bought a BRZ instead of a car that everyone and their mom already have :P I can only assume i will have more encounters in the spring/summer when i start cruising with my windows down, and all the punk kids are out of highschool.

Cameronghanson 02-10-2013 04:04 PM

Yeah... i live in detroit...aka muscle american car capitol...so its weird on a day where i dont have a mustang, challenger, charger...any product by GM, Ford or Chrysler pretty much try and race me... and also every 50 year old guy in wrangler jeans, white new balances and their prize 2003 corvette they take out twice a year... that "only has 2000" miles on it, ask me why i didnt get a mustang GT or something american. Thank god ive got mods...

No. You don't.

Thanks for the input. I never do anything stupid. It only takes a quick burst at not even full throttle to put them in their place.

rhoyle 02-10-2013 09:16 PM

Like you said, the car just "brings out the testosterone."

I know my limits and I never go past or generally even close to them.

rhoyle 02-10-2013 09:55 PM

It's just good that you put those Kia crossovers in their place with your mighty 911. Can't have them thinking you're soft....

It was more just a joke for us. I'm not sure why you're so invested in making me out to be a ****.

Vicious LED 02-10-2013 10:11 PM

I had an audi A4 pull up next to me today at a light, modded out, figured they'd try me, since it's almost custom in Vegas for tuners to try every other tuner they see. They roll down their window and it happens to be two beautiful, early 20's ladies just complimenting me on my FR-S. Big ol' grin on my face :D

Funny, I haven't had anyone rev at me or try to race me, at least to my knowledge. Probably because I usually just cruise and rarely look at who's sitting next to me at a stoplight.

Although I did have a guy at a party last night ask me if I could take his Mustang in a race, I just said "Nope, you'd definitely beat me". And that was that.

Had a Mitsubishi Lancer... wasn't an evo, just a lancer and some other silly looking badge on it. He kept messing with me on the hwy... Traffic was moving about 65 and I ran it up to about 85. I left him a couple times, but that could be because I hit the gas and he was constantly playing catch up... then he weaved in some traffic and I knew then he was dangerous... I slowed down and let him have it... I stayed in my lane and cruised right past him as he was pinned behind a school bus and some other slow ass driving car.

Another, some DUMB F*cking A**hole in a Subaru outback... he and his old lady were gauking at my car... then he sped up and slowed down and sped up and slowed down... I punched it... pulled off he was trying to catch up but I was steady gaining ground, so I let off and he cut in front of me and went to the right of me and the two started bouncing in their car dancing and slowing down... I have no clue... I just moved over to the far outside and cruised by them... stupid shit!

Good talk. I've been saying since I joined that the one thing this place was missing was a nice helping of condescension.

Are the two mutually exclusive?

Never said those 2 encounters were the only ones. I've only listed the 2 Camaros because they were by far the lamest ones I've experienced. I've only had the car for a month

What people do here is drop to about 10kph under the speed limit when they notice you behind and then floor it when you overtake. It doesn't seem to matter what they're driving. I always slip it into 4th now, to get past quickly because when they do that it can change the safe pass into dangerous.
I had a bad one the other day. 90kph limit with the 2 lanes becoming one further ahead.
Guy in front doing 84kph, passed in 6th[big mistake] at 95kph and ended up having to drive outside the single lane because he had sped up to 110kph which was what I was reading when I slipped in front finally.

I don't know why people complain about the power, it's got more squirt than something like a Harley and sounds much better in the process.

BRZPDX 02-11-2013 12:42 AM

If someone fucks with me, I will fuck them back.

Fucking with me is:
Unnecessarly cutting me off
Tailing the fuck out of me
Honking
Verbal taunting
Windshield spray while driving in front of me
Flashing lights

Luckily these things don't occur much in my city.
