FA20 is VERY fuel hungry

Has anybody noticed the surge of fuel that is used when you stomp the gas? Im not sure how much it uses but dang, gotta say its kinda scary! I mean it gets up and goes but it uses alot to get there.

pheoxs 02-06-2013 01:43 PM

All engines use lots of fuel under acceleration ...? Not sure what the issue is here. Are you meaning that the mpg/lper100km indicator actually shows it and thats why you think its high?

chenshuo 02-06-2013 01:47 PM

your right foot is VERY heavy.

Tt3Sheppard 02-06-2013 01:50 PM

I dont really notice that much of an increase in fuel consumption when pushing the car. 4 Cyl for the win

akuhei 02-06-2013 01:52 PM

I can damned-near hear the gas drain from my tank when I step on it in my truck. Even pushing it for all its worth, I get much better gas mileage in the FRS than I do from that, so...:iono:

rice_classic 02-06-2013 01:56 PM

I get 15mpg in my van when I'm hyper-miling. So yeah, there's that.

Mr. Man 02-06-2013 01:56 PM

anyone else notice the harder you hit your head on a wall, the more it hurts?

FR_Soldier_77 02-06-2013 01:57 PM

yes, my right is very heavy.. at times..lol. I mean in some spurts where I have been able to hit a triple digit speed, doesnt happen often.. Im also reving to 7k as well and shifting. I know its how long you accelerate for too. So yeah it adds up, but still, I shouldnt be able to see that much of a difference in a couple of seconds?

Never tried, sorry. Tell us more about your experience.

sol740 02-06-2013 01:58 PM

The last three sports cars I've owned were pretty awful on gas, particularly city gas. Oddly enough, my vette got 30mpg highway, so the average was the best of the three. The FR-S over this last week seems to be averaging 25mpg. I think that's fine. As good as my vtec accord.

Trashed675 02-06-2013 01:59 PM

I remember resetting my fuel average before doing a 1/4 mile run on my motorcycle. With burn out, staging, pass, and return to staging i averaged 15mpg on a bike that returns 50mpg on the freeway. Full throttle applications will be thirsty no matter what kind of vehicle you drive.

A buddy of mine has a built chevy 360 in a chevy monza that runs low 11's and he gets about 1-2 mpg going down the drag strip.

That right there makes a huge difference. Running the car to redline vs running the car to 3.5/4k is going to make a huge difference in the gas you use. And flooring it to get to said points make a difference as well. I get 30mpg in the FRS if i'm not putting it to the floor at every stop sign/light. Having fun every once in a while (basically when I dont have a pile of traffic around me to hold me up), I am still managing 28mph ish city. Of course, if i'm not going to floor it, I shift at 3k-3.5k. :burnrubber:

pheoxs 02-06-2013 02:33 PM

For commuting I actually shift at 2500 if I'm not really in any kind of hurry (aka in traffic and stuck behind people anyways). Weekends/evenings are different obviously

FR_Soldier_77 02-06-2013 02:49 PM

on weekdays im very casual and let the carshift on its own to keep the gas mileage up.

Neziah 02-06-2013 02:50 PM

All vehicles are that way...../facepalm

I've had some pretty varied tanks, my best was 34.6MPG. (After I installed my coilovers, been driving sloooooow.)

And my worst was 26.4MPG, I'm pretty sure I did a lot of pulls on the highway, haha.

DarkSunrise 02-06-2013 02:52 PM

Comparison of past cars I've owned over the same daily commute:

- FR-S: 28 mpg
- GTI: 24 mpg
- STI: 19 mpg
- RSX: 30 mpg

GTB/ZR-1 02-06-2013 02:54 PM

Is it fat out the back (black smoke)?

Chewie4299 02-06-2013 03:19 PM

This thread has to be a joke....

My guess is the OP is driving his first car with an MPG indicator. My Jeep drops to damned near 0 when I gun it. It shows instantaneous MPG. If you were to continue to 'mash it' for a whole tank you'd get absolutely shitty range out of that tank.

Pretty much sums it up. Sure I'll hit ~50L/100kms when accelerating ... but I accelerate for what 100m then I'm at a steady speed. Thats why you'll get worse mileage, but instead of getting 8L/100km you'll get 9 or 10 L/100m

jadewbj 02-06-2013 03:50 PM

A built supra turbo will use a gallon per minute at WOT. That is fuel hungry.

I'm getting 31.1 mpg currently on my frs

CaptainSlow 02-06-2013 04:31 PM

Yeah, but you're not DRIVING IT TO THE MAX, BANGIN' OUT EVERY GEAR LIKE UR ON THE 'RING like some of the more "special" members of this forum

I got around 24.5 on the tank I did highway pulls. The gas station where I filled up had a CONTAINS 10% ETHANOL warning, whereas other gas stations that I've filled up the car don't have it advertised and I got better mileage. That might just be my right foot on that one tank though...

Ethanol-free fuel definitely gets better fuel economy. Definitely.

The catch is that the other stations where I fill up aren't advertised as "ETHANOL FREE" I just can't find the "CONTAINS 10% ETHANOL" sticker. Ethanol has a lower energy density than gasoline, so getting less MPG makes sense, but without testing my ethanol content I'm really just speculating about the EtOH content of these various stations.

PERRIN_Chris 02-06-2013 05:17 PM

This thread is even funnier because there's a thread just a few down about a guy saying he's getting 40 MPGs, LOL!!!!!

deucethemoose 02-06-2013 05:19 PM

Everybody move along. The Troll's feeding time is over.

CircuitJerk 02-06-2013 05:21 PM

All this talk of consumption is making me hungaly...

Spaceywilly 02-06-2013 05:22 PM

It's almost as if that pedal you press to go faster is called the gas pedal

fenixv8 02-06-2013 05:26 PM

^ lol

FR-anco89 02-06-2013 05:30 PM

trying to be constructive to this thread:
VW R32:16-20MPG (3.2 VR6)
BMW 135i: 18-22MPG (3.0 I-6 twin-turbo)
FR-S: 22-28MPG (2.0 Boxer-4)
I'm as they say a spirited driver, sometimes more than other so consumption obviously varies.

In summation, you want to get better gas millage get a Prius.
1.8 I-4 hybrid 50MPG

FRiSson 02-06-2013 05:54 PM

The engine does have two fuel delivery systems, port and direct. My guess is that it can deliver more gas under load than unitary systems.

Turbowned 02-06-2013 06:15 PM

So let me get this straight:

Your other car is an S2000, and you complain about fuel consumption with this car?

Do tell...

The preferred nomenclature is "accelerator" :bellyroll:
