car locked me out

It was -20 C this morning, so I started the car to let it warm up a bit. When I came back out of the house, the car was locked, but still running! Fortunately I had the spare key in the house. Cold weather gremlins maybe?:iono: Has that happened to anyone else?
Good thing it didn't happen at work - that would have sucked.

Wes 02-05-2013 12:44 PM

Nope, but out of paranoia that might happen, I roll down the windows whenever I start her up and im outside my car

Cheddar 02-05-2013 01:01 PM

Iv never had my FRS auto lock..... How do you set it up because I read the owners manual and didt see anyhting about that.

grodenglaive 02-05-2013 01:32 PM

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have autolock.

Tylub 02-05-2013 01:40 PM

that's pretty strange, never had auto lock on me either and i start up and close the door and go back into the house and I can always open up my door

I do the same, plus I always have my valet key on me.

edj 02-05-2013 01:51 PM

i have had my car lock the doors on me. :(
i would curious to know what causes it.

J-Money 02-05-2013 02:32 PM

ive had it once..

Frostyman 02-05-2013 02:46 PM

That's odd, because you can't actually lock the doors with the door open unless you push the lock itself. The switch will unlock both doors if the engine is on and a door is open. Maybe malfunction?

Nevermore 02-05-2013 02:52 PM

I haven't had it happen that way, but the car does have an auto lock. I was showing it to a relative once and I thought he'd want to look inside so I unlocked it, but then we just kept talking while standing next to it. After a couple of minutes I heard it lock back without me hitting the button.

b.e 02-05-2013 03:03 PM

The FRS does have an autolock. Unlock it with the key fob, and if you fail to open the door, the locks will re-engage. This prevents accidental unlocks when putting your keys in your pocket accidentally triggers the unlock button.

I tested some things this morning after reading the original post here.

When the engine is running, the key fob buttons are ignored.

When the engine is running, the lock button on the driver arm rest will work, but will automatically unlock if the door is ajar. If you start the engine, then step out, this auto unlock function should guarantee the doors will remain unlocked. As far as I could discover, the only way to lock the door with the engine running to to be in the car and operate the lock manually, or press the door-lock button on the arm rest.

My guess is the low temp stressed some lock actuator. Somehow. In a mysterious and probably non-repeatable way.

Yeah it locks within a minute or two after you unlock if you dont open the door, but it should disengage after the door opens

Cheddar 02-05-2013 03:48 PM

OP is saying it autolocked with the car on....

Hasn't happened to me.

But the 86 GTS in AUS has a smart key with push button start so key never goes into ignition or out of my pocket is that the same as the FR-S?

no, the FR-S has a regular key (there's no push button start option)

that is exactly why you need keyless entry.

Gavin Albright 02-13-2013 01:43 AM

Something I always do when leaving the car running is lower the window just enought to get my hand inside.

Also note: My doors auto lock occationally when I open and shut the trunk.

Happened to me a few months ago....extremely frustrating!! I had to go in through the trunk, put the rear seat down, climb into my car and reach for the unlock switch, and slide back out of the trunk. Probably the most awkward position to be in ever.

If this did happen while you were out in the car you can always do the same thing I had to do because there is a physical key inside the keyless remote to access the trunk.

Glad I'm not the only one, I do the exact same thing. I've had more snow drop into my car by doing this but I can't bring myself to close the doors with the window up.

Its okay snow is better than being locked out haha, if anything you can always just close the door to the point right before it latches to prevent snow, but of course theres some paranoia in that lol

TennisHsu 02-14-2013 04:19 PM

I've come close to shutting the trunk (doors locked) with the keys inside. That will be a bad day indeed.

Thank God I have Keyless entry on the BRZ. I tried to close the trunk one time and it didn't lock cuz the remote was still in the trunk. lol

Freakin' paranoia ruins everything!

With the FRS, does the car auto lock if you forget to lock it when exiting the car?

FRiSson 02-18-2013 10:09 PM

Something in your pocket pressed against the lock button on the fob.

Mine has done this as well.

thats happened to me a few times to, while im showing ppl the car while its not running the doors will lock , other times i come back to the car though and the doors are still unlocked

Black Tire 02-22-2013 09:24 PM

I really dislike/distrust the autolock feature. I really fear that I will get locked out someday were I do not have easy access to a key, so I normally leave a door ajar when I am getting things out of the trunk etc. I am very careful, but still worry. I may try to disable this feature in the future.
