Coffee, my love, why have you turned on me???

Apparently I can't stomach regular dark roast coffee's anymore...which is not good when I work boring ass 12 hour shifts sitting at a desk. Anyone have any experience with the new "stomach sensitive" coffees out now? I think Folgers has one...not sure of any others. Sure wish someone would come out with a low acid coffee in K-cups...

RiskyTrousers 02-03-2013 02:35 PM

Don't do Folgers for the love of god!

Stick with a good Arabica bean. If the brew is too strong, add hot water AFTER its been brewed.

It's not really that it's too strong, it's just the acidity...I guess. I've been a coffee drinker for 30 years and it's only recently that it's been tearing the ass outta me. I can usually drink coffee that would strip the paint off the walls, but I guess I'm just gettin' old...gotta do something. I can't spend 4 hours of my 12 hour watch on the can...:eyebulge:

I heard "cold brewed" coffee is much lower in acidity...may have to try that....

Nevermore 02-03-2013 03:15 PM

Certain coffee drinks from different coffee shops can upset my stomach and leave it feeling crappy all day. I can't figure out what it is or why though. The worst one seems to be anything I get from the coffee shop on the first level of the building I work in, but Bruegger's coffee doesn't seem to affect me. I can also drink all I want of the stuff we've got at home without a problem.

rice_classic 02-03-2013 03:15 PM

Organic coffee is what you need. Trying getting a bag of Caf and a bag of Decaf. Brew a pot half/half (the caffeine can be the big offender) and trying using a stomach friendly creamer like FlaxSeed Milk, Coconut milk or Almond milk. Also no sugar. If you must sweeten try Agave Syrup.

dem00n 02-03-2013 03:37 PM

Organics bullshit, i'd bet my right nut on it.

Its the substance in the coffee, not the bean it self. Try different milks, sugars and so forth.

There is no certain answer to your problem.

I've been looking into this...I'm pretty sure it's the acidity. Even if I drink it black...it ends badly. It's like David Duke and Louis Farrakhan are fighting it out down there.*

*hat tip to Seinfeld...

The half and half is not really an option at work...only have a Keurig machine. I suppose I could get one of the reusable K-cup pods and try some mixes? Thanks for the tip. :party0030:

if youre not drinking 100% kona, youre wasting your time. i hate coffee but ever since i found out about kona kens coffee i have been drinking plain espresso shots. maybe with a spoonful of sugar

What about tea?

Perhaps its not the coffee but the stomach flu?

Xdragonxb0i 02-04-2013 12:32 AM

Switch to tea

7thgear 02-04-2013 08:39 AM

how do you brew your coffee?

is your pot clean? is the boiling chamber clean? is filter area clean?

is the water clean? Do you just use tap? What kind of building are you in?

is your cup clean, how do you clean your cup? Do you use those Styrofoam cups? Do you rinse it before use?

f0rge 02-04-2013 12:17 PM

are you sure you haven't developed a dairy allergy instead of a coffee sensitivity?

buddy of mine (32 years old) just developed a milk allergy in the last 6 months and cant have any dairy at all anymore, even just a splash in coffee sends him running for the toilet.

n2oinferno 02-04-2013 02:55 PM

I'm willing to bet it might be the caffeine. Gets to me too if I drink too much.

norsamerican 02-04-2013 03:05 PM

you know you ARE getting older..caffeinated drinks may be taking its toll on your body now. Sounds like you may have early onset of IBS (irritable bowel syndrom) which is only worsened by greasy fatty foods and caffeine

HunterGreene 02-04-2013 03:12 PM

Hate to say this...but my mother has acid sensitivity too, and drinks "Sanka." Can't say I have ever tried it, but they must be doing something right if its been around all these years. Good Luck!

And nothing saying you can't always switch to low-cal energy drinks, right? Just avoid the carbonated ones.

Not if he wants to stay awake and not have an amazing caffeine withdrawal. No tea has as much caffeine as coffee. Sure, its easier on the system, but he'd have to drink about 3x as much liquids to get the same amount. I'm all for a liquid flush, but that's ridiculous.

luxmn 02-04-2013 03:19 PM

working out. using your own body to keeps your mind sharp and awake is the best way.

Easier on the system, and have some caffiene in it. Of course it wont have as much as Black Coffee, But what is? Mountain Dew and 5 hour energy?

Caffeine withdrawal is no big deal. It is totally worth it to shake the dependence - If one so desires.

@sho220 do you know it is the pH level that is causing the issue?

That's probably the culprit. Acidity wearing away the stomach lining, etc.. Doesn't prolonged coffee ingestion cause ulcers?

Didn't realize it was so common. Yipes.

OrbitalEllipses 02-04-2013 07:47 PM

Note: Acidity is a flavor tone, but the actual pH of coffee IS in the acidic range.

Xdragonxb0i 02-05-2013 12:54 AM

Could you put milk in the reduce the acidcity p.h of 6.5-7.0 or i you can try something else

Milk won't reduce the pH as much as it just dilutes the coffee slightly. To reduce pH you either need to add a base or buffer. And some people just don't like the flavor of cream in the coffee.

Btw, a quick google search actually finds that dark roast coffee is apparently better for people with sensitive stomachs. Go figure! :w00t:

TouchMyHonda 02-05-2013 09:10 AM

I'd try drinking a half glass of mike before Ur coffee love making session, and finish the milk after. Milk is a base and should help with Ur upset stomach and counter react the acid. I used to drink tons of milk as a kid. I simply stopped as I got older. I started getting crazy daily heart burn recently just looking at food. Started drinking milk again, problem solved. Might not be Ur answer, but at 2.99 a gallon try it out.

Another trick is to eat a banana, since it partially coats your stomach wall while its in there. Professional eaters (heard this from Adam Richman) use this trick when they are going to be eating extremely spicy foods.

TouchMyHonda 02-05-2013 06:56 PM

Ain't nothing wrong with a daily banana.

SubieNate 02-05-2013 07:34 PM

I'd say it's more than likely caused by your diet as a whole and the coffee is just setting things off. Lower the average acid content of everything you're eating and watch your stomach problems disappear. :)

Quirky Questions: Why does coffee make me poop?
Quote:

Researchers believe that the bowel-stimulating quality of coffee comes from caffeine and/or other substances contained within the coffee brew. Although there have been no large-scale studies on this subject, what we do know is that drinking coffee can stimulate movement of the colonic muscles, thus promoting peristalsis (the coordinated contraction and relaxation of intestinal muscles that causes bowel movements). One study noted that the magnitude of this peristaltic effect of caffeinated coffee is similar to one induced by eating a meal. It’s also 60 percent stronger than the effect induced by drinking water, and 23 percent stronger than the effect due to drinking decaffeinated coffee.
Aside from promoting bowel movements, coffee can also cause looser stools because increased peristalsis leaves less time for the colon to perform one of its key functions–reabsorbing water from fecal matter to produce well-formed stools. Be aware, however, that other common accompaniments to coffee can be culprits in this matter. Dairy products, excess sugar, even “sugarless” sweeteners like sorbitol (a well-known substance used as a laxative) can cause diarrhea.

kanundrum 02-05-2013 10:40 PM

Switch to proper indian chai, none of that starbucks BS. Chai is actually all natural and can be found at your local indian/asian grocer. Tastes great, has a good amount of caffeine

I'm gonna suggest you lay off the coffee and caffeine for a few weeks. It could be that your bowels are slightly inflamed, or irritated and they simply need a few weeks of rest.

Also make sure you are washing your hands before you brew the coffee, and are drinking from a clean cup. You probably should wash the K-cups before you use them too, and clean the machine.

xclusive_brett 02-06-2013 12:36 AM

I have this issue as well. I never will drink coffee on an empty stomach because that always seems to trigger it. Also, a dark roast coffee will be less acidic than a medium to light roast coffee. Try something from the Asian/Pacific growing regions as they typically have low acidity and great spiced, earthy flavors. Most of your Latin American coffees will be acidic. If you want to get more in depth, try and avoid washed processed coffees because they will have been fermented giving them a bright acidity.

Clean cup. Use a "community" Keurig machine at work. Water is tap but run through a Brita filter piture that is changed regularly. Seems more related to how much I drink. I don't drink as much at home and I don't feel as bad...

Haha, when I was on vacation last year someone brewed coffee and chai one morning and I poured a cup and took a sip.. and promptly was like wtf is this horrible blend? Ugh, I did not like it one bit. But then again, it wasn't what I was expecting, so if I went in expecting a different flavor I might've had a better reaction.
