Question about the nomenclature..

I had a question I know the 86 designation comes from the famed AE-86. But I see some people call it the 086 (adding an 0 in front) or sometimes 086a (adding an a after the 86).

Does anyone know what the 0 and a mean and why some people use those terms and some dont?

Thanks!

It's just a unique chassis code. They've been using it for the Subie version too. FT-86 is particualr to Toyota, meaning "Future Toyota - 86"

So even after both cars are produced and get their unique names people will basicaly refer to both cars together as "086a" ?

Nah, there'll probably be a unique subie and toyo code. This is just for the prototype.

I wonder what names both companies will give the cars. More interested in what Toyota names it.

I think they should just name it the FT86 (even if the FT stands for future toyota), people are going to be used to it by then and I like the "86" reference.

+2. If I hadn't read that FT only meant 'future toyota' I would have thought this was the official name for the car and I thought it was a brilliant name. They really should keep the FT86 name. This car is going to be an absolute smash at the Tokyo show and they should keep the continuity of the enthusiasm and name.

OldSkoolToys 10-16-2009 06:38 AM

I say Sprinter. :p

That would be disappointing. If they were to name it anything with a heritage it would have to be Corolla since the concept is obviously a reference to the AE86. But the Corolla name isn't exactly sporty right now and the car looks nothing like a Corolla, so that's unlikely.

They should name it something completely new. AE Coupe would probably be cool.

Badge it as the corolla trueno :D or just Trueno GT-S

Jordo! 10-17-2009 07:46 AM

It'll probably be a "Celica" or get a brand new name. Hell, it might even wind up being a Scion (**retch, vomit, choke**)

God I would rather it be a Celica.

Hachiroku 10-17-2009 11:58 AM

I vote for completely new model name!

scape 10-17-2009 02:22 PM

i agree, ft-86 looks and sounds cool. but that is nothing like their other model names. the only other cool one is maybe Vitz.
i hope they skip supra, celica, etc. and go with something new. hell, maybe it will be like suzuki and sound like wakazashi or something nutty
just not anything scion. hah

How about "Watanabe"... like the name of the AE86 wheels and name of toyota's vice chairman.

I'm fine with it staying FT86 or some other letter/number combo, like when they named the MR2 :)

7shades 10-19-2009 06:04 AM

Trueno.

Treuno 10-19-2009 07:44 AM

Since FT-86 references the 86, there's a chance the final model name will have some type of reference to it as well. I highly doubt it'll be Sprinter as the Japanese tend to be a little more creative when it comes to confusing the English speaking world with their model names.

Chances are they'll come up with a name in Japanese, punch it into google translate and slap it onto the rear of the car.

knock on wood

Franisco 10-19-2009 12:04 PM

I think a new name would be the best way to go as well.
On a side note, it's nice to have some Toyota fans on this site. I feel like all I've been seeing are comments on Autoblog that say "I won't buy it unless it's a Subaru."

#87 10-19-2009 12:16 PM

I really hope they go the Si route and offer it only in manual transmission. A girl at my school has an automatic celica... What is the point?

What's with all the hatred towards Celicas?

The last gen car would have been quite similar to this one in terms of sharp looks, light weight, expected power output, and excellent handling and braking ... they just had the wrong wheels doing all the work... :sigh:

And even FF, they still made decent rally cars apparently... http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=307183

So long as they do a good job with the gearing, why not? More sales = more likely Toyota will keep offering fun, hot cars. Aisin makes a nice 6 AT supposedly. Just an option, folks, not a mandate...

And actually, I'm pretty happy with my auto, thanks... :D

It's not a hatred ofCelicas (at least on my part), personally 2 of my favorite cars are the 75 Celica and the early 90s Alltracs.:burnrubber:

The reason I do not want to see the Celica name plate on this vehicle is that;
1) it kinda represents a rebirth of Toyota
2) with the 86 in the title (an obvious reference to the AE86) it would see backwards to name it the Celica.

but hell i'll buy it if they name it the Toyota shitstorm so its not really that big of a deal

I get what you're saying, but they'll pick up more customers than they'd lose going with "Celica"

Agreed, tho' -- I'm interested no matter what name it gets :)

how about Toyota FR2. it's a new name yet it has the feeling of carrying on toyota heritage. i floated that idea on an AE86 forum but it wasn't very popular..

it would actually be FR4 as there are 4 seats.

ichitaka05 10-20-2009 06:38 PM

IIRC name of the car is FT-86 and the code name for the car is 086A. Well that's what I remember hearing in this vid

well you could say the 2 now refers to displacement and not seats.

Right, the joint project platform is "086a"

I would love for them to keep the # 86 in the name somehow. Or definitely give it a completely new name, not Celica, not Corolla, etc..

FT///R86 10-21-2009 04:07 PM

Maybe Toyota will take a page from Nissan and name it the Toyota GTS. I highly doubt it though. They will probably come up with a new name for it. I like idea of Sprinter Trueno but they might just use that for the Japanese market. I would hate to think they would recycle the name of the Celica.

How about "AE coupe"? Got a ring to it.
