Motiv Concepts Cat-Back Prototype

Hey all,

It's been a while since we've updated everyone on our progress with our exhaust system, and certainly many people have been inquiring about it. The reason why we've been taking so long is that we've been testing different muffler designs to get the sound the way we expect people will want. Our axle-back prototype that we did for the Meguiar's FR-S was certainly a little too loud for my personal tastes, so we went back to the drawing board and tried out a couple of different designs. This is the one we are really confident people will be happy with in terms of performance and sound:

By using a larger body muffler design, it keeps the sound where I personally believe people will be happy. It's not too loud, not too quiet, but a real nice deep tone. And similar to other European exhaust systems we have built for other customers, it will have a slip-fit to connect the midpipe to the muffler, and the tips will be fully adjustable so you can get it where you like it.

We are going to be taking this exhaust to the dyno shortly to make sure the performance numbers are where we want them to be. Once that's settled, we'll have pricing info. We did this setup on our personal project car with our overpipe, HFC, non-resonated midpipe and it sounds amazing. I think you guys will really like it once it's ready.

I'll be sure to post up videos of the car on the dyno with just the cat-back, and then with the overpipe, HFC, and cat-back so people get a good idea of how it sounds.

perfect ! nothing to add //thread

JoeBoxer 01-31-2013 02:39 PM

I'll do some videos with the Overpipe and Test Pipe also whenever you get ready to send me one. :)

So, you guys designed this one for a true Lotus-esque diffuser...

Tell me that's on the drawing board!

karne 01-31-2013 03:08 PM

Hope that this is in the Invidia n1 price range

That'll be pretty hard to do since we roll and pack our own mufflers and make our own tips instead of buying anything that's off the shelf from a third party manufacturer.

It's unfortunate, but it's what we do to maintain the quality of any product that has our name on it!

Some people just don't understand the difference between something hand built and something mass produced by robots.

Seriously. I have the test pipe and overpipe and they are beautiful works of art.

chutrain 01-31-2013 03:52 PM

You gotta pay to play. I have the overpipe and HFC pipe and they are well worth the price of admission.

Jason, sent you guys an email for something custom.

RYU 01-31-2013 03:53 PM

I like the design. I like that it's made here.

My only question... being that this is a center entry/side exit exhaust, depending on how you built the center mixing chamber, it could be a location that collects a lot of heat. I don't have xray vision but can you confirm this will not be the case?

This is what happened to my last exhaust that had a similar layout.

any plan for resonated midpipe ?

No, we run our perf and packing way differently than what you see in that exhaust.

We have built exhaust systems for some well-respected race cars, so our knowledge and experience is pretty extensive in this department. When we build our next one, I'll try to take some photos of the inside.

Not sure yet. We originally wanted to do a resonated midpipe, but other than making a resonator ourselves (which would not be cost efficient at all for you guys) we'd have to source an off-the-shelf one. We tried a couple, just not thrilled with the quality.

Obviously if someone *really* wants to use a cheapo resonator, we'll be more than happy to oblige. But it's not something we'll be recommending or trying to sell.

Quite honestly that's the reason why we tinkered so much with muffler designs and tried several different ones before settling on this larger one. It allows our customers to have a non-resonated midpipe without it being too loud.

ScionFrsFan 01-31-2013 04:48 PM

Will you guys offer just the axle back?

ScionFamily 01-31-2013 04:52 PM

That looks high quality! Can't wait for video.

AZFA20 01-31-2013 05:02 PM

Good stuff! I don't even want to install my stuff from Motiv because I enjoy staring at it on the kitchen counter so much haha. Now, as excited as I am for this catback. I am even more eager to see some header options

*KID* 01-31-2013 05:37 PM

NICE! ETA on info?

Me too. Would really round out the whole Motiv exhaust theme. :happyanim:

DSOmegaX 01-31-2013 06:16 PM

Will you guys still be offering a mid pipe designed to bolt on to the oem alexback design?

We will, but it'll be a different design due to how it'll mate to the factory midpipe.

Couple of weeks hopefully. Will know more once we get it to the dyno and make sure we're satisfied with the gains.

Knowing that it won't be the cheapest exhaust out on the market, we want to make sure our customers are not only happy when they hear and see it, but when they drive with it.

I like the way this exhaust looks, and your other products look to be of stellar quality, but please don't tell me this will be anywhere near the price of something like the Supersprint exhaust system, which is well beyond the realm of affordability for this particular serf.

I don't know pricing on that Supersprint one, but we are doing everything we can to make it as affordable as possible. Like I said, it's unfortunately all labor and we understand if only a select few choose to purchase it. Quite frankly we'd rather make test pipes and high-flow cats and overpipes all day long as they aren't as labor intensive and have a better profit margin than a cat-back exhaust system ever will. Not to mention how cumbersome they are to ship!

But we have had a lot of people ask for it, and we're trying to do our best to make an affordable option for those that want a quality piece that isn't mass manufactured overseas. Our original design consisted of two mufflers, but that's nearly double the labor time of packing and rolling our own mufflers, which is why we opted for a single muffler design.

We are also going to have options for tips... some take a lot longer to make than others. We will also open for people to use their own tips which could cut back on the price.

As many people with our products will vouch, our primary concern is quality with our products. We feel that if you're shelling out any amount of money, whether it be large or small, that you should get something that's worth your money. Sometimes it's worth more, sometimes it's worth less!

edit: kudos for using the word serf.

JoeBoxer 02-01-2013 12:22 AM

I will vouch for the quality of motiv and the support i have got from them, the test pipe was one of the first parts i put on my car and i have been in contact with them ever since. I don't know how much this will cost but i will buy it no matter what, i have been dealing with a lot of brands now and getting to see the other parts lets you realize the quality you get here. Whatever else they make will go on my car also i like quality parts and the price is always more than fair.

coolaron 02-01-2013 07:07 AM

Please please please make resonated version for those of us who are going to get header in the future! :)

Vukodlac 02-01-2013 08:10 AM

Very nice, I know what I'm getting next.

illmatic 02-01-2013 11:51 AM

nice! I'd also like to have a resonator for extreme stealth (I'm just getting old). need any additional testers? (I'm in OC, Ca)

dj petey 02-01-2013 12:06 PM

weight? sound clip?

tripjammer 02-01-2013 12:36 PM

I am down, since I love the front pipe and over pipe.

Coming soon.

No weight yet, it's comparable to stock though. We use heavy duty packing in our mufflers so they don't have a chance of breaking down like a lot of other mufflers do.

ScionFamily 02-09-2013 12:43 AM

Any updates? Very interested in the progression of this!

tripjammer 02-11-2013 04:49 PM

I am in San Antonio, but if you need any testers....hehe!

Craig 02-11-2013 05:32 PM

I've been waiting on the Motiv catback to make my final decision. Already got the test pipe so I know all about your quality!! Look forward to vids/dyno

SubieNate 02-11-2013 07:20 PM

Why is there what looks like a neck down as the pipes exit the canister? Just curious. I'm 99% sure it's not enough to cause any issues.

You guys, FT-86 Speedfactory, and Milltek are at the top of my list.

Nathan

MotivConcepts 02-12-2013 12:42 PM

Hey all,

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been out with the flu and haven't had a chance to take my car to the dyno. I am hoping to go this week and will be reporting back if things are indeed... satisfactory! Thanks for being so patient.

tripjammer 02-12-2013 04:02 PM

Get well soon bro! We need those dynos and videos of that awesome exhaust you are making for us!
