Underglow?

I had it on my previous vehicle and personally I think it looks boss and will probably do it to my frs but I was wondering is it like out of style? I feel like I hardly ever see or hear about it anymore

Grey 01-29-2013 10:25 PM

Like almost everything else, it's personal taste. Do what makes you happiest with your car, you're the one driving it.

Cade01 01-29-2013 10:38 PM

Some will hate some won't, I think it looks good sometimes but I don't like all colors. Not sure about on the FR-S, there are some pictures a couple with it in the Japan pictures thread I think.

bestwheelbase 01-29-2013 10:41 PM

Whatever you do, turn it off while driving. It is distracting like crazy. Especially when I get a glimpse of a blue light in my mirrors and have a tiny heart-attack.

wootwoot 01-29-2013 10:57 PM

Fast and Furious.... it just won't die....

86_ZN6 01-29-2013 11:00 PM

it's a scion, it must have underglow!!!

that's why i re-badged to toyota! :bonk:

jarviz 01-29-2013 11:00 PM

just... don't. this car is sexy as it is. leave that to the civics

You mean Neon underglow? Yea, I remember that back in high school in the early 90's. Only ricers use it today.

DaJo 01-29-2013 11:03 PM

To each their own. Whatever floats your boat pretty much. I personally do not like them but I don't have anything against them either. Just don't have them on while driving.

boredom.is.me 01-29-2013 11:05 PM

To me, underglow is like saying, "hey look at me and my lights" (in Jeremy Clarkson's voice). There are rare occasions where it does look... not rice...but those are few and far between.

If you have underglow on a visually stock car, it screams "I HAD to do something to my car."

mangostick 01-29-2013 11:07 PM

I always thought they looked cool as long as viewing the car you cant see the tubes/led's unless you got underneath the car.

As said, some will hate.. some wont. Its kinda something that got shunned pretty hard after the F n F movies. Everything is cool when no one is doing it, then once everyone does it.. the luster wears off.

I agree with the others man, do what tickles your fancy. Keep it classy, and post pics!

Nevermore 01-29-2013 11:17 PM

I dunno, I'm kind of against the underglow lights because it just seems like rice to me. That being said I am intrigued about this and want to see it.

Mo707 01-29-2013 11:27 PM

I dont think it would look that bad, but i wouldnt do it.
And i would probably use the LED under glow instead of neon.

no no no no. especially if you live here in socal. i could kinda understand if you did that somewhere like the midwest or mexico where they are like ten years behind the curve but not here.

the thing that confuses me is that it isnt even a trend that is emulating a perfromance upgrade. i get the gross/heavy carbon fiber or stupid vents and huge spoilers but what is the point of this?

russv 01-29-2013 11:37 PM

Way too rice!

So that's what those things are! I almost thought my car was defective and was about to bring it into the dealer for warranty... :bellyroll:

I wasn't aware underglows were still a thing.

6-Shift 01-30-2013 12:38 AM

Go for it! I think it'd look cool

Ryuu0u 01-30-2013 12:50 AM

Oh yeah! Welcome back to 1998. Just make sure you don't blow the welds off your intake manifold when you hit the NOS. Be sure to get the exhaust flame throwers and light up windshield sprayers.

Synack 01-30-2013 12:51 AM

The only car that's allowed to have underglow is the R34 Skyline from 2F2F, assuming somebody owns and drives it. Other than that, expect parts to fall off your car from it being mad at you for putting underglow on it.

Don't forget the neon interior and neon tire stem caps. And the neon license plate frames.

ahausheer 01-30-2013 12:54 AM

I would recommend against it. There is nothing classy about it. Its tacky.

Cade01 01-30-2013 01:45 AM

From the "Japan pics" thread

You could do a Knight Rider grill :D

Strangely enough, I saw one of those movie cars shortly after that cinematic disaster was released. I don't remember underglow but I do remember gargantuan amounts of black smoke churning out of the exhaust. The car was that pretty blue color, which was nice.

jbsali 01-30-2013 02:07 AM

i don't mind it to be honest. I used to have a set in my ricer days and then dropped it and just stuck to the jdm/ clean scene. If you do plan on going through with it, make sure it's even glow. I hate seeing cars with just the basic 4 bar design, if youre going to do it, do it right. wheel well glow kits and glow kits long enough for fr/rr and sides.

to each their own though

GNS 01-30-2013 03:03 AM

Do it. It's perfect for a Scion. Don't let the haters stop you from making your car as dope as possible. It will look JDM if you combine it with herrafrush, at least 5 or 6 stickers, and a couple domokun plushies. Props for keeping the tradition alive bro. Can't wait to see the mad sick pics daaaaaawwwwwwgggg

gily25 01-30-2013 10:09 AM

Guess it all depends on your scene and whose attention you're trying to get. Personally I think it's gone along with all over graphics but if you're looking for something just to turn on at meets then it could be something that draws people in. The only cars around me with it are ricers whose better days have come and gone.

Turbowned 01-30-2013 10:19 AM

Um, well I thought underglow was really cool when it first came out. Like, I really wanted to put it in my car. 10 years later it's definitely out of style, though.

I suppose it could work on a built-up show car, but I would strongly advise against it on a mostly-stock FR-S. If you have the wheels, lowered, kit, wing/spoiler, modded headlights and taillights and customized interior, then I could see it adding to the mix if you're parking it at a show. Otherwise, probably not a good idea if you don't want someone dropping Uncle Ben's references when they see your car.

Puddle lights on the other hand, now those might be fashionable with the whole VIP crowd.

BoostinIX 01-30-2013 10:34 AM

Meh. Your car. Do it however you like.

I could use a few domokun plushies in my car. So KAWAII DESOOO~

campy 01-30-2013 12:05 PM

I think the image a lot of car modders go for nowadays is "racecar, but I don't want people knowing it's a racecar", ie no loud colors, body kits, blingy wheels, etc. As opposed to the early 2000's when customization was more focused on expressing yourself and standing out from the crowd.

I know in Japan, the latter is still very popular.

wbradley 01-30-2013 12:19 PM

Firstly, look at my avatar!

Secondly, NO!

jstn 01-30-2013 12:29 PM

Whatever, do what you want, it's your car. But yeah it's pretty out of style. To be fair I think most people thought it was cheesy even when it was in style.

Underglow is like the Hammer-Pants of car aesthetics.

As a midwesterner moved to CA, thanks for keeping the jokes alive. At least the jokes about how CA thinks its soooo special... ;)
