Nail in the sidewall

Found out today just how expensive a replacement tire is for the FR-S. Stupid nail

Mr.Jay 01-29-2013 09:05 PM

How bad is it?

Prob the cost of one hp tire. You can buy mine ill even throw in 3 other ones if just in case it happens again haha

I would take the nail out spray soapy water on it and see if it bubbles.

ApoNono 01-29-2013 09:08 PM

It's pretty bad. Enough that I have a constant slow leak.

New tire with installation is $284.

ravenblackfrs 01-29-2013 09:09 PM

I would have just put 2 different tires on and kept the good one.... then couple pay checks later bought the other 2 to match the set. PRIMACY tires are expensive, and good for PRIUS' but not for the FRS.

Mr.Jay 01-29-2013 09:11 PM

Ahh kk I would buy new good tires and sell the HPs to a tire shop or prius owner with some ballin 17s

The stock tires are pricy and not worth it at all.

Hell if you got the cash buy rims and tires and they will come mounted already for you.

You just reminded me that I've had a tire plugged for like 6,000 miles.

I should probably get that fixed.

Rabble 01-29-2013 09:21 PM

Yeah Primacy HPs are damn expensive. You could get a Pilot Super Sport for less per tire and those are the best sport tire in existence.

ApoNono 01-29-2013 10:43 PM

All things I should have done prior to the post! Guess I will just eat this tire and remember not to do it again.

ApoNono 02-13-2013 10:23 PM

Fun update - the dealer just got the tire in on Monday. I went in today to get the new Primacy HP put on and my first service done. 1.5 hours later I get called into a room with my service agent and 3 service techs. They informed me that the right tire was ordered but the wrong one delivered. The tech didn't notice until after he had the wheel mounted and balanced.

Long story short I had them put the damaged tire back on and get to play the waiting game for the correct tire to come in (2 days if they are to be believed). It was 2 days from my original post and it took over 2 weeks and 3 phone calls to get it in.

Oh the joys of Toyota Service Departments

My mustang's tires probably had 1-2 plugs in each of them lol

I just came back from a trip overseas to find one of my tires was completely flat. Damn nails. Luckily the nail wasn't in the sidewall, so was pretty easy to patch. Otherwise I'd be out $170 for a crappy Turanza tire.

Should have just bought upgraded tires and avoided the entire hassle.

boredom.is.me 02-14-2013 12:34 PM

I got a wheel and tire protection plan from my dealership that covers any wheel and tire ever mounted to my car. And it costs less than what a replacement wheel would cost so it's a win-win for me. I'ld see if your dealer offers something like that.

why on earth would you go to the dealer for a tire?

norsamerican 02-14-2013 04:51 PM

The day i bought my car i went to Discount Tire and purchased Road Hazard Certificates as well as Lifetime rotations and balances. I recommend others do the same. They will replace the tire FREE of charge if you have an irrepairable nail or blowout etc..
Not to mention it takes them 45 mins or less to do the work. No long waiting at the dealer.

Lazy I guess lol - the upside is with this hassle I will get the tire for less than tirerack.com has them listed for.

The ideal situation would be to have enough to just get a new set and move on but my house was robbed last week so the funds are a little low from the expense of getting my families life back in order.

Depends on the dealership. Almost all of the ones here will price match.

RAWR BRZ 02-14-2013 10:26 PM

dont just buy the tire from dealer or anywhere else... there are a lot of people selling their full set for 500-600... one tire for 280 vs new set (including wheels) for 500-600.... pretty obvious what to do.

ApoNono 02-15-2013 05:03 PM

Positive update: though I know the majority of people would say to avoid Toyota service centers. I just had my new tire installed and they gave me a discount for my trouble on Wednesday. I got my new Primacy HP installed for $150.
