foot rest popping noise

I noticed that if i put more pressure on either the top or bottom of the left foot rest, it makes a popping noise, almost like it's not sitting flat. Anyone else notice this?

mottor 01-22-2013 08:39 PM

Mine does it. I have no idea why. But seeing as how it's a foot rest and not a foot press I don't let it bother me. As long as I don't press on it, it doesn't make noise.

Bu-Tang 01-22-2013 08:50 PM

Mine does it as well, probably just some bad clips, also its called a dead pedal!

I'll take it apart to look in the spring, dealer would probably replace the clips until a tsb is created.

Burrcold 01-22-2013 08:57 PM

Mine makes more of a loud crack noise (almost like something has broken). I've gotten used to it, but there is definitely something not right with the dead pedal.

bakerr6 01-22-2013 10:54 PM

I have the same issue. I'm not sure why it does this, but I plan on placing a billet plate down there that I'm going to have the 86 logo etched in it anyways, so I don't care atm.

Wankel Rex 01-22-2013 11:53 PM

Just started popping in the last week or two. Hope to dig into it this coming weekend or the next.

Mike86 01-23-2013 01:05 AM

Yeah same for me as soon as i apply a bit of pressure it starts popping!! Id be interested in knowing why it does that even though its nothing important!

kchkwan 01-23-2013 03:37 AM

same... its kind of a squeeky pop for me...

Mac1235 01-23-2013 10:20 AM

Here is the fix boys or at least so far for me. If you take the bottom panel off there and look under the dead pedal it is basically a piece of like styrofoam underneath to provide a base. This piece will rub against the metal and make the noise. You can use silicone sealant and just bead that baby up and it wont pop or squeek anymore. It has been working for me for about 2 months now.

mhigham 01-23-2013 10:58 AM

How do they miss this? Or the trunk pop? Or the idle issue? Or the chirping?

These are all issues they knew about but rushed into production. I am sure they will all be fixed for 2014, but we suffer in the meantime. Price we pay for being first.

If everything's fixed and cool in 2015 it might be an excuse for me to trade in for a shiny new one ;)

cmspooner 01-24-2013 11:02 AM

I brought this up to my dealer...and they showed me a new one on the lot that does the same thing. I hope that tsb shoes up so I can get it fixed.

Even the simplest car is an extremely complicated machine...you also have to remember the difference between a development vehicle and production. There is a lot of stuff that changes between the development and production stage, and sometimes those changes translate into minor little issues that can be fixed later through warranty work, TSBs, etc. The truth is that when you are in development your sample size is relatively small...when you get out into production, the sample size increases exponentially, and sometimes things happen that you can't see or predict on a small sample size.

Mac1235 01-24-2013 02:26 PM

I don't know why we keep talking about TSB for this kind of thing, this is a 5 minute fix TOPS. I fixed it in 5 minutes and there is no noise at all now. It was a place to cut corners in terms of cost and weight. Put in 5 minutes of effort guys and lets move on to problems that really need a TSB, this is not one of them.

Thank you for this - could you take a picture of the "Bottom Panel" you mentioned? Or at least explain that part a little better? I plan to do this when I get the car, as it seems like a common issue...thanks for the solution! You should post in the DIY section, for sure!

When I get a chance to take it off I will post some pictures. Kind of waiting on this insane cold spell to pass before I mess with the car any. :)

I understand that and appreciate it. I work in automotive R&D for a large automaker. Development ceases at a set point and no other changes are allowed, and test vehicles are built using production parts and assembly techniques. My point is all the issues would have been seen during this testing, and it was decided to forego making anymore changes and start productions with known "defects" - idle, deck pop, GPS, dead pedal, etc. It just seems like a car with so much riding on it, they would allow so many little things, and a few big ones like the ECU, to follow into production.

The testing is so rigorousness on cars, there is NO WAY every one of these issues wasn't seen, duly noted, and then ignored to rush production. Trust me, much smaller issues that the customer would probably never be aware of are usually caught during testing every day where I work.

mikeg7827 02-03-2013 03:39 AM

YESSSS IM HAVING THE SAME ISSUEE!!! ITS SO ANNOYING LOL

sorry for the caps.. i thought i was the only one..

so this is my 3rd problem with the car after the TL condensation, fuel pump chirp now the foot rest lol

Stav 02-07-2013 01:33 PM

Same here, must be a small design flaw. The pics would be really great for a dumb ass like me.

Thank you

abutterman 03-07-2013 12:14 PM

so i didn't hear it much recently up until yesterday when the slightest touch would make all kinds of popping/grinding/clicking noises. I just looked at it and i noticed some of the clips going down the middle didn't seem secure. I just yanked at it and all the clips came out. I then held it down tight and put the clips back in, tapping them with the handle of my screw driver to make sure they were all the way in. Seems to have stopped it for now. Might just be the clips don't stay in properly all the time

tripjammer 03-07-2013 05:02 PM

Here is how you fix this problem. Take out the two Clips that hold in the foot rest, and put some kind of lube on them and then reinsert them and your popping noise problem will be solved. Get you a set of panel popping tools to remove those two clips. These clips are metal. They are kinda hard to get out. I would also try to look for some new ones from the dealer. They might have made them better over the last year.

Mine is not making any noises now. All I did was spray some electric contact cleaner on the end of each clip and then inserted them back in and I was good. If anybody knows of any better lube let me know.

RYU 03-07-2013 05:08 PM

I have this. C'mon... it's fun. I play with it everyday in traffic. Press up > Pop. Press down > Pop. Rinse and repeat.

tell me about it haha

kingping 03-18-2013 01:04 PM

Same issue here...
Maybe when I'm feeling energetic I'll fix it. Minor...

abutterman 03-18-2013 02:21 PM

in my case the problem was that even after lubing it up, it would move around so much with the clips all the way in that it would start acting up again. anyways, subaru gave me an awesome deal on a trade in for a brz limited so i took it. the dead pedal feels much more solid in this one and i haven't had any weird sounds coming from anywhere yet. time will tell though...

fistpoint 03-19-2013 12:38 AM

What direction do you move your foot to make the noise? As far as I can tell, mine is fine. Serial is 20000+, January 2013 production.

the frs would move in any way you moved your foot. it was extremely loose and pushing the clips in and greasing them up did nothing. It was as if the holes were drilled incorrectly or something and the clips would just move around. if you pressed down on the top it would click then it would click again as it went back down and you could move it slightly to the right too and the carpet would shift with it. It was all kinds of messed up. My brz now though is as solid as can be

m.wood0213 02-20-2014 02:32 AM

Reviving a dead thread here. Anyone come up with a fix or a least way to take this piece off. I would also like to know if anyone using the wethertech floor mats experience this issue since the pics show to cover it up somewhat.

mfbmike 02-20-2014 03:40 AM

lol, mine does it as well. not worth the headache.

krayzie 02-20-2014 10:01 AM

I have a 2014 and same thing.

At the risk of setting on fire I drive the A/T so its the only place for my foot to rest. Ill probably try a few things later today and ill post if anything works.

userjack6880 02-20-2014 03:39 PM

Good thing I'm not the only one.

m.wood0213 02-21-2014 12:56 AM

UPDATE: Sprayed WD-40 in the upper clip hole and lower clip hole and the pops arent noticeable anymore. The plate still moves but I cant hear it. Idk how long it will last but only time will tell. Id still like to know if anyone using weather floor mats notice this issue or not.
