Should I?
I'm about to go pick up my car from a dealer in Toronto on Friday ( that's when it comes in) and there is a 80% chance for 5~ cm snow... Should I postpone it (hate to) or just go for it? *first RWD & I'll be driving to Niagara Falls* :iono:
2 hour drive back home in a RWD and summer tire, i'd say postpone. Also imagine all the salt you gonna accumulate on the car thru that 2 hr drive.
My suggestion is either snow tires, or weight in the back. I recently had one on the ice at the sleeman center in guelph. I added 264lbs of dead weight (water softener salt bags), never lost traction on the ice or my 20minutes drive home in a snowstorm, but can get a little scary without the weight

Don't drive in the snow with the stock summer tires. They're not even all seasons. Have a set of winters installed before hitting the road.
With the summer tires, or even the all seasons, waiting might be a good idea if there's snow falling. This car is pretty lively in the white stuff. The nannies do a good job of keeping her straight, but without winter tires it could be dicey. If you plan on winter driving anyway, you're going to need some good winter skins. JMO.
I wouldn't recommend it. Even if it goes well you won't enjoy it. Wait a few days and drive on good roads. Traction with the stock tires is very, very poor on snow. What is a couple more days now?
DO NOT DO IT! You definitely don't want your an accident on your first drive with the car.
If its the FRS likely has all seasons, but I'd say postpone it... at least until saturday
Be no fun spending the first 2-3 hrs in your new car in grid lock.. |
Wait.
i had stock tires on snow for 2 mins, can't even move forward. i made a 180 degree inertia drift and went back home. you really need snow tires. you can buy them and bring them to the dealer on friday.
Get some snow tires
I don't suppose the dealer will give you a good deal on some winter tires? Or perhaps a place down the street? Winter tires are a must for a driver with very little seat time in a RWD car. Not to mention most are sold with summer only tires.
ahh I see, I knew it was gonna be hard to drive on snow but its saying Friday would be the first day to snow more than 1 cm.. what if its not actually 5 cm can I still drive it in 2-3 cm? + when highways are cleaned up?
If it's snowing but the roads are clear you're fine. Just take it easy whenever you're turning. If there's ANY sort of accumulation of snow on the road, even if it's just a layer, I wouldn't bother. Wait until a day where the roads are clear.
And as others have suggested, if you're going to be driving it in the winter then you're going to want winter tires anyways so it might not be a bad time to just get them installed when you pick the car up and that way you can drive away regardless of the weather.
You might stand a chance if you have the Bridgestone Turanza all seasons that some people have instead of the summer only Michelin Primacy HP's.
ahh I see, and the winter tires won't cause a problem at all?
If you plan to drive in winter you need winter tires. You absolutely should not risk a 2 hr highway drive in the first real snow accumulation. Either get snows near/from the dealer or wait for a clear day but still realize the Michelins give reduced traction in freezing conditions.
All seasons are unforgiving, specially on the highway, one mistake and you'll be off the road, at least with snow tires you still have some control even in deep snow. Why not just buy some tires? They are worth it if you drive alot.
I've put my winter tire payment through my lease price :P |
16" Snow Tires on steelies will run you about $800 installed at places in Toronto. Alloys maybe about $11-1200. If you are winter driving it's a no brainer for your own personal piece of mind and insurance purposes.
Depending on where the dealership I would think of either getting the winters and bringing them with you for delivery and getting them installed. Or if the shop isn't too far, drive the car to get the steelies installed at the tire shop. Minimize your risk by going early in the morning too. |
perfect, thanks for the help guys !
saturday is supposed to be clear
You could tow it via flat bed if you're baller.
Or if you are a CAA, you can tow it for xxx mileage |

Downtown Scion, I ordered it about 6 days ago too! you?
Its supposed to snow 10cm tonight and I have to take my car in to get detailed and 3m'd tomorrow on the stop Mich HP tires. Going to be a fun day!
Turns out dealer doesn't even have my car in yet *sighs*
Can't say I didn't see that one coming though. |
Car isn't there and you are only finding out today, the day you are supposed to be taking delivery?
I'd be a little peed |

They promised I can pick it up Friday, but referring to the main reason I made this thread... I guess I can wait some more days until the snow clears up heh?
But yeah I am still disappointed |
You'll drive right by us on the QEW as you go from TO to NF, I have one set of steel wheels and winter tires left if you like. We can bag you OE tires and take them with you.
Thank you |
I pick up my car today around 2:00pm.
It was snow like hell and the road condition was very rough. I was very scary with those brand new primacy tires. It took me 45min to back home which normally takes 15min drive. I am consider to get a set of snow tire or drive it until the weather is good. The dealership I went to was outstanding service. They offer me a fatback tow truck to delivery to my door for no charge. But I end up drove it home because I was so excited to drive it. It was a great experience to buy Subaru for this dealership. |
