who's afraid of buying the first Gen?
appart from all the bugs and stuff that come from new cars/engines
I feel like the second I purchase this car they will announce a stronger version (STI maybe). I'm sure that if any turbo/supercharged versions are being worked on, they will keep their mouths shut so that these news won't affect initial sales. I've waited so long for this car that I can't wait another year or so to see what happens. I'm sure a lot of you feel the same way. |
If the depreciation is not that bad, I may consider trading in for an upgraded version
|
After years of them developing (and teasing), I don't have the will power to wait for the next gen. I also will take some pride in telling my future children that I owned a first gen, as I am sure that this car will have a long and healthy history.
It also happens that within the next 6 months I will be desperatly be needing a new car and as of right now this is one of the few cars that I have found all that appealing over the last few years. |
Prepare to be 08 WRX'd.
|
I'm not worried about it. I'm sure there may be some hiccups but I have faith that they've tested these mules enough to eliminate any huge problems. I'm also not planning on spending the extra $10k for an STI version so I don't feel like I need to wait.

I don't mind buying a first gen. I have had 3 first gen vehicles with no major issues to date.

Not worried about a first year/first gen car.

i would be worried yes but i've had a first year scion tc in the past and although that car was 100% toyota with great reliability history, it didnt fail me for the 5 years i owned it.
with subie, i might be 1% more worried just because its a different manufacturer. however all the testing and development of the car for the past 2-3 years must have proved something for reliability |

I'll wait couple of years for the STi version.

:laughabove: trust me you have nothing to worry about Subaru's reliability, I abused/enjoyed my 06 wrx for 5 year wihout a SINGLE problem on that car. there might be tiny bugs here and there but the rest should be good forever! I had stage 2 which has more torque and power than a Scion could dream of and never had a problem. Subaru's are kickass cars. |
STi is almost a given. manufacturers do things for a reason and debuting the STi in North America was to make a point.
But as far as the 86 goes, it been in development for 5yrs so its had a good shakedown. i wouldnt worry about 1yr problems. more like 1st yr envy when they start adding new models/features. but then again are you willing to pay ALOT more for the STi? |
Yeah, I plan to just buy it now and spend that STI cash on some nice wheels or something... anywho I would not, and am not worried about the power thing (I mean, thats why we even care about an STI model right?) I am sure we will see crazy things/engines in this car. And those will prolly be cheaper and out perform anything you can buy at a dealer...
|
Since I don't think I'll ever care to pay that much for a turbo version, 1st gen doesn't bother me at all. And I like to think that a NA might be more reliable than a force-induced one.
|
No first year jitters. Just more.. "waiting to see what else they put in."
|
Not worried about bugs and what not. This car isnt going anywhere guys. No rush for me to buy first gen which means I can wait and see if there is going to be an STI available. Then theres the debate of whether or not the STI is worth the extra money. Those of you who need or want the car spring 2012. Go for it... I wouldnt be worried about bugs and what not. Subaru makes a great product. I have learned my lesson and purchasing a vehicle is something that you shouldnt be rushed into buying or even scared of buying. Need 100% confidence!
|
Gonna go first gen because I am impatiently waiting to get this car. But yes I do know that I will be mad when toyobaru officially announce a Forced induction version. But hey. you cant have everything in life. So I'll just go first gen and upgrade(more power/big brakes all that) it over time. I'll make mine better than the next model they release.
|
I am not in a position to buy a car or anything, but I have a strong feeling this car will get better and better and competitors will possibly appear in the market, so I doubt I'll ever touch a first gen. As far as the car itself goes it's really quite good, but there are things they can do to improve it still and I like perfection :)
|
Whether or not I even buy this car is based on what Mazda and Alfa Romeo announce in the time leading up to it going on sale. Also depends on what Subaru says about the next WRX.
I'm keeping my options open. |
If you like it and want it, buy it. Don't wait for what might come to be years from now, because you will have lost all that time twiddling your thumbs.

i wouldn't be too worried about this you have to remember now that toyota has badged this as a scion and if any of the other 4 scions are an example there wont be any huge modifications power wise to the car. subaru can say they want to but i don't think toyota would let them do anything huge.
if you are worried about huge changes just think of how much time and money went in to making the car as it is and if subaru is prepared to call this a "zenith" i doubt they will say while this was our zenith this is our new zenith after a few short years. |

On the flip side if the STI does come out and it's turbo then I'll be more than happy with my underpowered NA BRZ. |

That's a turbo car, change the turbo and you can (obviously) get that with exhaust changes and different turbo. Toyota was involved in testing as well. I doubt the car will change greatly for a few years, and then the change will be a tuned model IMO. |
Ala S2000. the big changes were 04 (2.2) 06 DBW/traction control.

There would have to be significant styling modifications and an engine upgrade for me to switch cars when a newer model is released. Otherwise I plan to stick with the BRZ for at least 5-6 years. |
Im not worried about it aside my FC3s every other car I've own is of it's first gen and first year. So it's nothing new, sometimes I don't like the trend where the cars of the first gen is clean looking then they get so aggressive and fat that I don't like them(Eclipse for example.) So no problem here that and you might get a lower price to buy use. Now... I hope it doesn't have big problems like say RX8 in it's first year.

It's also tough to say if a FI version will be out for this at all. Autoblog said when this motor was designed it resulted in simply no room for a turbo where traditional boxer turbos were placed. It's also a new motor with 12.5:1 compression. That is not FI friendly at all. They'd likely have to drop the compression and package it with a weirdly mounted turbo. That's basically a significant redesign. Another option is to go SC. TRD has a strong history of using Magnuson for thier SC (I have one in my Tacoma). Packaging wise, that seems more logical but they still have to deal with the high compression issue. That won't be so easy for the dealer to handle since all TRD SC units I know of are dealer installed not factory installed. I think FI isn't until way way way down the line.. maybe after 4th yr at least and will require engine internals to be changed. |
I thought about this too - but then again - I, like several others have said - have waited quite a long time for this car. And I'm only looking for a daily driver. It looks like we may see a convertible and possibly a higher performance variant coming later down the road, but neither would do me justice as far as a daily commuter goes. (I intend to have fun with the car on the side) but I won't be disappointed if a turbo model comes out or if they manage to squeeze a little more power out of the current setup.
They have been working on this car for a while, and want it to be right - They're trying to make a good impression. Every car will have its flaws from the get go, but I don't think it will be as flawed as something like the first gen GC was when it was first released. Toyota/Subaru wants this car to have a good reputation, for many reasons. |
I am a college student, I wont be looking at the sti anyway. :D
If there is a bug the dealer will fix it  |

AP1 9000RPM redline is awesome, but the AP2s are more livable and I always beat the 05 and older cars in autocross with my DBW 06 :P |
I'm going to (hopefully) buy it now because it's cheap and has plenty of power as it is. In 3 years when my warranty expires I'll be able to see what's out there for turbo kits/engine swaps or just trade it in for the STI version.
I'd rather take my own route to getting more power than waiting to see what they do to it. If you want to wait until you know you are getting the best version you will be waiting forever. |
