Calling All Smokers

Hello, my name is Matt, and I'm addicted to nicotine.

Now, on a serious note, when I purchased my BRZ back on June 15, I vowed never to smoke a cigarette inside the car. 9+ months and nearly 15,000 miles later, I have stayed true to my word.

Purely out of curiosity, has anyone else done this or have any stories to share?

Jayde 01-21-2013 04:09 PM

I don't smoke, mostly because I can't stand it nor how much money it costs and the risks with it. I can say though that I've never smoked a cigarrette before.

My mom smokes, but she doesn't smoke in the house or in her TSX. I can tell she doesn't smoke in the car because even after almost 2 years of having it you can't smell it all when you get in it.

Khazzy 01-21-2013 04:12 PM

I tell you what, I would not buy a car, no matter how good the price was or how awesome it was if the original/previous owner smoked in the car. It will always smell that way. Huge deal breaker.

Even as a smoker, I agree 1000%. Prior to selling my Cherokee, I put quite a bit of work into getting the smell out of the upholstery. That still doesn't solve the burn marks, etc., but definitely helped me sell the car at the price I did. I still smoke in my Legacy and when I switch to it from the BRZ, the odor even bothers me at first.

Moral of the story, I guess: don't smoke, and if you do, quit!

OrbitalEllipses 01-21-2013 04:26 PM

4,000 miles and 4 months; I haven't had a cigarette in my BRZ and I don't plan on it. I did it occasionally in my WRX and I saw how gross it made the interior. I've also been in cars that the owners' smoke in continuously and while it's nice to have a smoke while driving, god damn does the car stink.

My biggest concern is the smell diffusing from my jacket into the seats.

jmaryt 01-21-2013 04:37 PM

right! the smoke will "permeate" the interior, and it's almost impossible to eliminate.
bad "gas" over time will do the same!

Umbie 01-21-2013 04:59 PM

Interesting info, friends. I have roughly an hour commute to work daily, so when I drive the BRZ, it gets tough sometimes to fight the urge. However, I made it this long, so I don't think I'll ever be lighting one up in the Zed. And speaking from experience, you do NOT want to have to de-odorize a vehicle to sell it because it was heavily smoked in.

Flat Black VW 01-21-2013 05:04 PM

Had mine since June and have not had a single cig in it. Smoking while driving used to be one of my favorite times to smoke too. This has actually helped me cut back from smoking a significant amount.

sho220 01-21-2013 05:06 PM

My wake up call happened one day when I cleaned the inside of the windshield and the paper towel turned a nice brownish yellow....yummy!!! I bought a new truck shortly after and made it a priority to quit for good. Ended up quitting for good a few days later and haven't looked back...

That was probably 10 years ago, and boy do I miss it!!! Amazing how addictive nicotine is. I still get cravings once in a while...but will never touch one again...

mezdup 01-21-2013 05:07 PM

i don't allow food or drinks in my car let alone cigarettes haha

Yupper...especially on long commutes or after a long day at work...

Slap the patch on while driving?

medically speaking, your lungs will repair themselves and present an appearance of never having smoked at all,and this will transpire over only a few months after quitting. just one more reason to quit!

chanomatik 01-21-2013 05:29 PM

Last year I was blown away when I saw a lady smoking in her 2009+ Subaru Forester. It was the first time I'd ever seen a smoker in a Subaru that wasn't beat up or a WRX. I don't think I've ever even seen a smoker in an STI.

I've never smoked, but have typically been surrounded by smokers, either co-workers (now), family (brother, niece and nephew), or other Subaru owners.

whaap 01-21-2013 05:35 PM

Timely topic. I have had a life long struggle with smoking. The last time I quite was around the first of July last year. I have again given into the urge and started smoking three days ago. I know it won't be long that I'll tackle quitting again but in the mean time I will never smoke in my car or in my house.

Yep I vowed to stop farting in my cars once I got this one. :bellyroll:

too much information?

Skurj 01-21-2013 05:49 PM

I only smoke when driving...

I spend probably 2.5hrs a day in my car, hard to resist!

But I've quit in the past.... had my last one in the car today! want to shake it before I take delivery of the BRZ...

We'll see what tomorrow brings..

Laika 01-21-2013 05:58 PM

Hah funny, I was thinking about making this same thread today out of curiosity.

No one smokes in my car. Ever. Glad to hear how many other people feel the same way especially coming people who smoke themselves.

ProTekk 01-21-2013 06:01 PM

I lasted about a month before I broke my own rule. I just hit the car with this every few days or so and I come back to the "like new" smell.

jstn 01-21-2013 06:04 PM

I smoke in my FR-S once in a while. Window all the way down though, and if passengers ask I tell them I don't smoke in the car. Meh. I need to quit soon.

RAWR BRZ 01-21-2013 06:16 PM

My BRZ actually helped me quit smoking... Well.. for a week at least but I never smoke in it.

looks good! smells better!

Jaylyons1 01-21-2013 06:32 PM

If I smoked, I wouldn't be able to afford the cars I buy. ^_^

dorifuto 01-21-2013 06:46 PM

I smoked for 14 years and quit cold turkey. I have a black and mild cigar sometimes while drinking but never in the car.

Mobius357 01-21-2013 06:56 PM

I have never smoked tobacco, but I have had the pleasure of cleaning a truck that had been smoked in for 15 years.

SquidyTweak 01-21-2013 07:07 PM

For those smokers out there, check out & read up on the developments in e-cigs. HUGE improvements over gas-station/mall cart stuff. If you want help or have questions feel free to pm me. Otherwise hit up this forum:

an average smoker spends $2500 a year on cigarettes. i just think that kind of money can be spent on say... a new set of wheels+tires and a nice rear diffuser and enough oil filters to last a few years.

DBacon1052 01-21-2013 07:25 PM

I can't stand the smell of smoke! My brother smoked all the time in his truck and it got to the point where I wouldn't even ride in it. The worst experience you can have with the smell is if you do Jiu Jitsu and the guy your rolling with reeks of cig smoke. I almost threw up by the time the round was over:barf:

EZWood 01-21-2013 07:32 PM

Hello, my name is Travis and I'm an alcoholic. Jk. One night I had to grab something out of my car while smoking, windows down for a few hours and I could smell it in the car the next day. I don't even let people stand near my car while smoking and you shouldn't either.

I agree with smoking while driving being one of the favored times. When I was driving the BRZ more (summer), I cut back a lot. Now that I've been driving the Legacy a lot (winter), I'm back to smoking more often. Can't wait for spring for numerous reasons!

I know people who use this and similar product, and it works fairly well. For me, it's more the principle of it, I almost feel like I'm insulting the car by smoking in it. That, and the spray doesn't eliminate potential burns, vacuuming ash, and yellowing windows.

rice_classic 01-21-2013 07:46 PM

I smoked for 10+ years. When I bought my S2000 I said I would never smoke it in. So what did I do? I put the top down, that way I was more "on it" then "in it" and thus I could rationalize smoking in (er I mean on) my S2000.

I say.. Smoke in the car. Be a smoker, commit. It's your car, light up. You can always steam clean the interior and soak it in febreeze when you go to sell.

Edit: I might want to add that the more favorable solution is to just stop smoking.

LOL. I found your comment thoroughly entertaining, but I will stand by my vow to never smoke in the BRZ.

Don't Smoke.

I'm a smoker...picked up the car in June and haven't smoked in it yet. Same goes for the Mustang. 5 years in, and I haven't had one it it either. Any time the thought enters my head, I think about how gutted I'd feel if I accidently burned a hole in the seat or carpet.

Turbowned 01-21-2013 09:07 PM

Not that I plan on buying a used BRZ/FR-S in the future, but I'm sure many people who will will thank you guys for not smoking in your cars. Very noble of you! ;)

The second car I ever sold was a brand new 2012 Audi A6; the owner traded in a Porsche Boxster S and immediately lit up a cigarette as he was leaving the parking lot with his brand new car. I cringed. We couldn't re-sell his otherwise very nice Boxster at our dealership because it just reeked of smoke and there was ash everywhere. Shame.

My MR2 was smoked in at one point and there's a burn mark on the headliner and a couple small marks on the driver's door panel and driver's seat. The smell is gone but the damage is permanent, and it's impossible to find a clean hardtop headliner :(

I feel bad... I accidentally "christened" a BRZ in the showroom. I farted in what will be someone's brand new car. I couldn't hold it! Hey, at least I didn't take it out on a test drive and bang it off the rev limiter?

How about you vow never to smoke a cigarette while standing on two feet? I bet you'd quit fast.

Edit: Better yet. Vow never to smoke a cigarette unless you have lit it with a fire that you made using two sticks of wood and some cotton fluff.

Accurate Race Shop 01-21-2013 09:19 PM

I have smoked in my FR-S in the past but only on long trips I try not to if possible.
