Why did Toyota Australia have to be different?

Ok, everywhere in the world, except Australia, the basic model is the 86 and the premium model is the GT86. Then it spans off in Japan to the GT86 Limited for the high end. ( I am not fussed if it's GT86 or 86 GT, same thing in this case)

Why is it that Toyota Australia decided to be confusing and name their models differently? My understanding is Australia is the only county with a GTS trim level. :mad0259:

The reason why I bring this up, is because, alot of NZ businesses are an Australian branch, and so most of the applications are written with an Australian database, or one would seem based on the recent conversation I just had.

I just got asked by a window repair company to confirm my car is a GT model as they have GT and GTS available in their system.

I then spent the next 10 minutes explaining that, even though it says it's a GT model, if they are using an Australian database, it is equivalent to a GTS. They also didn't have a plain "86" in their database. This just confused the person more, so I gave up.

Now I am pretty sure the windscreen is the same on the 86, GT and the GTS so I am fairly certain the repair will be correct, but the fact that Toyota Australia has used a different naming convention still annoys me.

st162celica 01-07-2013 04:07 PM

new windscreen. already ?

im actually surprised its even called a 86 in aust.
think in japan its called 86 GT limited not gt86 limited.
i kinda like 86 GTS Better than 86 gt limited.

dennis.s.s 01-07-2013 04:25 PM

The 86 isn't the first one.

The Prado line up here is GX, GXL, VX, Kakadu. But in NZ it's GX, VX, VX Limited. The NZ naming is the same as the rest of the world IIRC.

How bout the US where we didn't even get it as a Toyota.

You guys down under have it sooo nice.....

whaap 01-07-2013 04:32 PM

Yeah, be glad you're at least driving a Toyota and not a Scion! :D

omgwtfbbqsauce 01-07-2013 04:35 PM

Now your just being picky dude, be glad about having your car and stop nitpicking on small every little thing. Haters gonna hate

Nardi330 01-07-2013 05:16 PM

I'd prefer our cars are named like JDM. Ie GT and GT Limited. But it's a really small issue so it's ok

I would have liked to pay $26k for a scion rather than pay $35k for the Toyota 86 GT (base Model) I payed $40k for GTS (top Model)

Not hard for you guys... Just rebadge toyota... Done.

Maj3sty 01-07-2013 06:04 PM

Exactly, you yanks shouldn't be complaining about anything given how relatively cheap your cars are and almost 0% finance!

$40K for a GTS too, which is stil great value but nothing compared to the prices you pay over there.

Jedi1 01-07-2013 06:11 PM

Just stop it. The rest of the World got a Toyota and we got a Scion. You will be just fine!

Flat Black VW 01-07-2013 06:57 PM

It was sarcasm. I own a BRZ, don't care about the Scion/Toyota deal.

Panman 01-07-2013 09:41 PM

Believe it or not the whole badging thing goes back to the early 80s when Holden and Ford were the main competitors in market - Holden entry models were two letters (eg. Commodore SL), as were Falcons (GL) 3 letter designations were always for higher spec cars (SL/X etc. etc. etc.) it seems to have stuck and has permeated across all of the manufacturers over time as a sort of defacto rule.

Yes it is confusing.

DriftEightSix 01-07-2013 11:03 PM

Just tell them you have a ZN6 :D Problem now solved.

G RUSH 01-08-2013 03:22 AM

I don't really mind it, except for the fact that GTS is also used by HSV...

So I just call it the 86 when I talk to people I guess.

Lucky the 'GTS' is not a badge on the car.

It isn't going to matter for your purposes of replacing a window. The GTS is simply a heavier more bloated version of the GT.

Or conversely, the GT is the Povo pack GTS. ;)

Yup and if you read my whole post you would have seen I mentioned that. :)

This whole thing was just a rant regarding Australian naming of the car. Didn't realise so many people would get so worked up about it.

Might have been said in jest but as well as loving cars I also race a little laser yacht. Always makes me laugh when people put carbon fibre this and that to save a few ounces when I'm about 20kg lighter than most of them.

That dump could make a difference!

I used to race Lasers (and before that Moths if you have ever heard of those.)

Big buggers like me can demonstrate the disadvantage of extra weight in karts quite easily.

:offtopic: but:
Yep, we had a New Zealand specific square front moth decades ago, then the pointy bow international moth and now like the rest of the world we have those carbon fibre foiling moths (although I have never sailed any of the versions).

Only problem for me is I live in the windiest city in New Zealand and one of the windiest capital cities in the world and I'm a light wind sailor.
