FRS Passes everyone at Laguna Seca

Passed every car/driver in my run group. Well, in the rain anyway:

That was a very dramatic radio adjustment. I stopped there.

RS3, 225/45/17 - stock suspension, they did OK in the wet.

The whole video is over dramatic...

But the radio is the best, I was disappointed you weren't blasting a Chinese Opera or music from a Tarantino film.

BeltedBiscuit 12-27-2012 01:00 PM

haha, I thought the cheesy pop music would have given it away.

RRnold 12-27-2012 01:01 PM

It felt like I was watching this video in slow motion! :bellyroll:

I envy you, I wish I'd have a run on Laguna Seca in my FR-S. Looks like endless fun.:party0030:

Thanks! Maybe one day you'll be able to plan a trip out to Monterey bay and hit this track. There are many groups that hold open track days there. All track guys should try and run this track at least once.

Gixxersixxerman 12-27-2012 01:51 PM

I've seen one trackday offering at 290$... I'll stick to the streets of willow for 90$.. Of course I'd love to take the gixxer through the corkscrew but their noise regulations take my bike out of the picture

tech4pdx 12-27-2012 02:00 PM

Nice job! Hope to hit this track one day soon..

Hanakuso 12-27-2012 02:45 PM

If you can't pass the sound limit are you not allowed to run? My worse fear is driving all the way out I can't drive.

They'll kick you out... but stock exhaust will pass just fine :)

BeltedBiscuit 12-27-2012 03:21 PM

So....the reason why I was at Laguna in the first place was to test the new Borla cat back exhaust with the UEL headers installed. We passed sound with no problems. On a wet track (sound is harder to pass and is a few db's higher with a wet track) we registered 88db at full throttle under full load going up turn 6. The sound limit for this day was 91db. You get three chances to pass sound before they kick you out.

Wow, the car sounded better than I thought it would w/ that setup. How is it @ normal cruising speed? I may forego waiting on the Borla EL after hearing the sound quality of your car.

Nice job out there--R-S3s are not exactly the ideal wet-weather tire

I like the sound of the UEL, and the power it makes is just as good as the EL headers so it's really just personal preference. I really like the sound quality of this set up. It's not to loud at normal cursing speed and the drone at freeway speeds is not bad at all. When you floor it - sounds great! Sounds much better outside the car too.

You gonna be at SoWS this Saturday? I want to hear it in person!

Chris... holds the current stock suspension record at Buttonwillow 13CW... he's fast.

BAE 12-27-2012 05:56 PM

I hoping for a wet track days as well. I am running Michelin supersports. I think the 86 is hard to beat in wet

88-91dBA is terrific news for those who plan to track their FR-S using Borla Header 17284 + Cat-back 140496. Knowing that there are no issues passing sound @ MRLS answers this question for many FR-S/BRZ track owners with our cat-back. It's comforting to know adding our UEL Header will allow them to have both performance and that awesome boxer-engine sound!

At Borla Performance we prefer to sound-test @ Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca since they've enforced sound-limits for years and many racers are familiar with their standard. Recently we confirmed our Spec Miata Race Exhaust System also complies with MRLS 92 dBA sound limit.

Thanks again Chris for posting this video. Looks like you had a great time in the rain - MRLS is fun regardless of the weather. You're right about the rain and how sound limits can take the reading higher than a dry track day.

Gixxersixxerman 12-27-2012 07:24 PM

It looks like you had a great time.. The turning on the radio made me laugh, it's great to be able to enjoy yourself at the track... My first trackday, only one in a car ever, I was so nervous that while I had a great time I was just to nervous to be relaxed.. I'm horrible with names but rode with either CSG Mike or Dave, and found out what to do and then tried to apply it myself, I gained almost 10 seconds, but when he rode with me was able to point out my short comings and stuff.. I enjoyed the video.. Also my greddy evo 3 is already over the limit lol.. I wonder how much louder it would be with the UEL headers and over pipe

GTB/ZR-1 12-27-2012 07:30 PM

Is your over, front & mid-pipe stock? Thx

White64Goat 12-27-2012 09:06 PM

For better visibility, shove your rear view mirror up against the roof and adjust angle from there.

Jesse 12-27-2012 10:07 PM

looks like alot of fun

It was a little hard to hear the rumble, can you do another video with idle and driving off from idle? Also, whats the diameter of the headers, are they 2.5"?

robispec 12-28-2012 01:56 AM

the promoter couldnt garrenty I'd make so I had to not drive 6 hours to find out I would sit on the sidelines..Otherwise we would have had a EL header comparison..mid Jan We will have it!

tuckdaddy 12-28-2012 02:36 AM

You select that music. Damn that was a dramatic adjustment on the radio..

Alang 12-28-2012 03:03 AM

So jealous that you get to drive Laguna Seca! The corkscrew must have been awesome?
Just a hint, the gear lever is not a hand rest, shift and then put both hands on the wheel, also some nice tail out, action, a slightly later turn in will give you a bit more stability.
Thanks for a good post!

Thats the size I have been using on the track. All the rubber you need for DEs.

I love this car on the rain in the wet. Embarrassed plenty of fast hardware last event and it was positively delightful under rain. Isn't it awesome when people come over and say "I read that these are supposed to be slow, what gives?" haha.

Looked slightly tail happy. Do you have adjustable alignment? Try running zero toe-in next time, you should notice improved stability and grip under power, I would like to hear your results.

Cannot wait for our Borla UEL to get here!
