NorCal 2/9/2013 Saturday, Portola Valley Tank Museum Visit (or ThunderHill) RSVP

12/31 EDIT

It appears there are not too many people interested in military stuff so I am going to reduce my reservation with the museum to 10 people.

I would also like to ask for those who is considering to go RSVP before 1/15/13 so that I can give the museum a final head counts

Hi All,

I would like to visit this place again. I think it will be nice to have a group of us, all have a common interest in special vehicles, and perhaps put our cars in front some of the tanks and take some pictures. The collection of tanks is truly unique.

When: 2/9/2013 Saturday, 8:00 am.

Where to meet: Cupertino Starbucks ( Stevens Creek X De Anza, behind Chervron)

Schedule:
8:00am: Meet at Starbucks – Breakfast, Coffee and Bagels meet and chat.
9:00am: Start drive to Museum (a long route) – Saratoga Highway 9 – Skyline 35 – PageMill Downhill – Portola Valley.
10:00am: Arrive Portola Valley, Museum guided tour starts.
12:00noon- 12:30pm: Guided tour ended. Group picture, go home, lunch, do whatever with some new meet friends.

If you don't know what to expect, additional info:
http://www.mvtf.org/
http://www.yelp.com/biz/military-veh...portola-valley

The museum will only hold a group tour of 20 people, because of their limited parking and tour space.

They will ask for each person donates $20 for the visit. We are going to visit a private collection of Tanks and only make possible by donations and volunteers. Please response to this thread to make RSVP. I will send PM for paypal payment instructions for $20 prepayment to confirm spot. Sorry, non-refundable and I will donates that to the museum if no show for whatever reason.

I would like to limit to have only 1 friend tag along. This shall allow more BRZs owners to attend.

(I will edit and add more info here later)

They have no food/ snacks in the facility.

Who will go:

1. 86BRZ
2. drew935 guest1
3. drew935 guest2
4. JackSmiley
5. vubaru guest
6. vubaru
7. vubaru fiancé
8. drew935
9. drew935 wife
10.

Wow. I can actually probably make this one. 8am is awfully early, though, but I guess the tour times are 10am or 1pm. It also says that the tour lasts about 3 hours. So it would be 1pm when all's said and done?

BigFatFlip 12-27-2012 08:31 AM

This sounds great! Ive always been interested in this kind of stuff (or anything mechanical really). Thanks for organizing and thanks for the good heads up, got it on my calendar and most likely will make it.

The 10 am tour is reserved only for our group only. Last time my tour last only 2 hour some and we will be done before 1 pm. You can always leave early and walk away if you have something else in the pm. Thanks.

Ugh, want to go to this... but Grip Drift Skid 9 Thunderhill track day is on this date. :(

86BRZ 12-27-2012 12:56 PM

Now you make me thinking... Anyway....I edited the subject line to let people know about ThunderHill track day too. Never bored to own a BRZ/ FR-S!

Fish 12-27-2012 03:28 PM

That tank museum looks awesome. I've always loved military equipment. Wish I could go.

PMok 12-27-2012 04:35 PM

Neat, did not know of this place! Interested to go with you!

JackSmiley 12-27-2012 04:38 PM

drew935 12-28-2012 03:29 AM

I'm in at the moment and I will just meet you there since I'm closer to PV than the Cup ;)

Thanks and see you there. I will send addres and info when we get closer.

Since the owner passed, the collection is not growing. I think it will be a matter of time the heirs or the estate decided to sell off everything to other museums then this place will be gone. It is hard to continue without a person with $$$$$$$$$ and the love of the hobby.

86BRZ 01-01-2013 02:15 AM

Updated: reduce reservation to 10, please prepare the group with be combine with other non-forum visitors.

86BRZ 01-01-2013 02:28 AM

Thanks Vu. Payment and details will provide later as we get closer.

drew935 01-01-2013 07:21 PM

you can add my wife to the list and update us with the payment info. P'me if I don't get the payment to you when you need it, just in case ;)

Drew! The Opti coat guy! Will see you there!

86BRZ 01-05-2013 08:23 PM

Since the group is smaller now, I am going to do cash at the museum gate to save all some troubles. They take donation cash only so remember to bring some cash. The closest ATM is 15 mins down hill drifting away.

Hey 86BRZ, unfortunately, I might have some schedule changes (might have to be out of town for work), so I'd like to change my reply to a "maybe"

sw20kosh 01-15-2013 04:56 PM

If you want to do this activity and also drive on the thunderhill track, you can sign up with NCRC for the feb 08 (friday) open track event.

They have driving school, solo, point by & experienced run groups. I'll be there.

http://www.ncracing.org/events.php

Can't beat $99 for a full day of track fun!

Please see schedule on the first post. Yes, you may need to wake up early or just continue after the overnight meet with the Friday night Santa Cruz mountain group. Lol.

It was good meeting you too! Glad to see a WRB BRZ and my WRB Wagon :w00t:

86BRZ 02-10-2013 12:09 AM

Fist time ever: The Host Ditched!!! (me)

LOL...after waiting in Starbucks for an hour and half with couple no show pm and no pm reply, I decided to head home. I am happy to hear that drew and BFF visited it and enjoy the tour. Sorry for not coming, I was thinking no one will attend this morning.

drew935 02-10-2013 12:12 AM

We had a big group of about 20 people. I don't want to ruin the tour for people who still want to go with posting pics.
It is definitely worth it! :D

BigFatFlip 11-14-2013 04:06 PM

@86BRZ Just heard this place is gonna shut down soon.

http://m.sfgate.com/business/technol...136.php#src=fb

A few co-workers and I are planning to check out the place one last time around March. Should we give this one more try?

86BRZ 11-14-2013 04:21 PM

Bring back an old thread? Yes... I like to visit again before it is gone, but I am too busy these days to attend regular drives and not to mention organize one. Can someone do the organize part? Now our group is much bigger and I think more people will come this round.

I'll try to organize one as we get closer.
