Plasti Dip Exterior?

Has anyone Plasti Dipped there FR-S/BRZ yet? My Raven FR-S has a couple of scratches on it now that are driving me insane and I am contemplating Plasti dipping the whole car black. Any and all thoughts greatly appreciated. I know it will give it a rough finish

abutterman 12-24-2012 01:04 PM

i plasti dipped a few parts in the interior. I did the silver around the shifter and the silver going up along the sides of the ac controls. It can be rather difficult to get it on smooth and generally ends up with a textured look. I don't mind this for the interior though as it makes it kinda blend with the rest of the black panels.

Plastidipping the whole car? That sounds cool in theory, but IIRC, Plastidip only lasts a few months. This is especially so since the Plastidipped exterior will be exposed to the elements. And what happens if you get a scratch or something from road debris? Do you have to peel it off and redo it all over again?

bakerr6 12-24-2012 04:22 PM

you can fill holes, but yes it does need to be touched up from time to time.

Why not just get it wrapped?

I dipped my Mustang in June. It's still in perfect condition.

Jedi1 12-24-2012 04:41 PM

The myth that plasti dip will only last a few weeks to a few months is just that, a myth. This stuff will stay in really good condition for a long time. I've had a few friends that dipped their whole car and with the exception of a few touch ups, it lasted over a year. This is through weather several trips to the car wash.

I've seen it go for a whole year on wheels as well. Never used it myself, but I am SERIOUSLY thinking about giving the stock wheels a spray.

whitefrs 12-24-2012 04:42 PM

Wrap is like 3k

Asphalt~86 12-25-2012 03:31 AM

If you know what you're doing dip actually lasts surprisingly long. Even through elements. If you don't know what you're doing, then yeah.

JDMenrique 12-25-2012 10:51 AM

Be advised, professionals don't use spray can plastidip for large projects. They used a spray gun in a booth, etc. I'm not sure I'd recommend anyone doing this unless they knew what they were doing

Rayme 12-25-2012 11:52 AM

What's the point of covering the whole car? It looks like complete crap and you don't even enjoy the nice new paint.

mezdup 12-25-2012 11:59 AM

yea i have several scratches on my hood, courtesy of a quick, pre-thanksgiving dinner car wash my sister treated me to. what a mistake that was, haha. but yea, it's not worth plastidipping your whole car. the scratches i have are noticeable, but only if you're looking for them really. they bother the hell out of me, but there's nothing i can do and it's not ruining the experience enough for anything extreme.

I have 3 scratches on my car and want to protect the paint but also like the a matte finish... if they offered a matte finish from factory i would have gotten it like that but they dont... hense ill solve two problems with one solution

Sounds like a response from a man that can't swallow his pride and stand corrected on how it doesn't look like, "complete crap"... Bet you're a very insecure person lmao.

On to another subject... I'm deploying soon so I won't get much of a chance to go through with it before hand, but I plan on dipping mine sometime after I return. Haven't decided on color yet. However, I'm really liking this.

EXCELLENT response and I think that color looks sick! Send over pics when your done with it after getting back from deployment... my preference is still a matte black but that blue is really sick.

Tap'd from my G-Nex

The PlastiDipped BRZ is mine.

A few points:

1. Use a professional HVLP gun & air compressor. Don't use the rattle cans.
2. Shoot for a low-humidity day.
3. Lay down enough layers (4 minimum) to make it easy to peel later. More is definitely better.

I laid mine down on a day that was just a bit too humid. This caused the PD to cure differently than the nice, 'shiny' matte finish I wanted. Mine really, really sucked up the light. The pic above was taken the same day I laid the PD on, so it hadn't fully cured. Also, over time, the PD smoothed-out. I kept it on for about 4 months and never had any issues. It did save my bacon when I hit a piece of tire rubber that slapped against my rear fender.

All in all, I would look at doing it again -- if I had the right weather to contend with. I've purchased enough vinyl to wrap my car and will be going that route next.

After you peel the car, plan on getting the car detailed & waxed. The PD will pull all the wax off of your car.

I wouldn't mind plasti-dipping my winter wheels a gunmetal color. Since they're scratched to hell anyway :D

JDLAutoDesign 12-31-2012 05:14 PM

Im doing my starion when i get some free time.

Asterisked Accolade 12-31-2012 08:51 PM

I'm going to plasti-dip my whole car in the spring.

Cameronghanson 01-01-2013 04:06 PM

anyone tried matte white? My friend did his M5 matte white and it look pretty sweet

mrlewistan 01-02-2013 06:01 PM

i hope plasti dip gloss is nice and shiny. im gonna black out my wheels but dont want a flat black. was thinking about a metalizer too but decided ill probably make that look blotchy so its gonna be black dip and the glosser over it. hoping for the best

I want to do white but my car is red. Its going to take a lot of coats to make it come out nice

JDLAutoDesign 01-04-2013 10:29 AM

Before mine gets all scratched up I was thinking about just doing the matte clearcoat plastidip all over to give my stock hot lava a different matte look that i have yet to see.

Thoughts?

Thank you, i really needed the ego boost. Whats with the personal attacks, much for respecting personal opinions. They all look like matte rattle can paint job, not complete crap sorry.

JDLAutoDesign 01-05-2013 12:53 AM

Cant we all agree to disagree? As with any mod some will like some will not but at the end of the day its your car do what you like

plastidip looks like crap imo. Clear bra your hood, bumper, and fenders. I like the idea of plastidip though, but only for small trim pieces.

marky 01-24-2013 02:15 PM

Will using clear dip on front of the car help from little rocks chipping the front while driving in freeways?

Im always looking way ahead and see if theres like a construction truck thats dropping gravel/rocks..

thinking about doing it..anyone did that?

Skurj 01-24-2013 06:56 PM

I was thinking a matte wrap.. but I know I'll never do it... at $3k... nor am I going to get the spray cans out and dip my car.. though mebbe the stock wheels for next winter, to keep em like new hopefully.

If you buy the kit from dipyourcar.com it comes with gallons of appropriately thinned Plastic Dip and a sprayer.

@marky if you use the clear dip it won't be as shiny as the rest of the car, it will have a somewhat satiny finish.

yeah i was thinking of that but no problem as long as it helps with the tiny rocks chipping the front from day to day drive at work.. good thing dip comes off :D

gdrider77 01-25-2013 04:56 PM

I have not done mine yet, but plan too. I have already ordered and received the full gun/kit and 8 gallons of different colors. I am not sure i am going to do my whole car, most likely just the front bumper/clear bra style. And some trim on the sides, lower rocker panels, mirrors, etc..Not really sure yet, but once it warms up a bit more i will be ready to do it. So far just shot my emblems on the rear, and have been real happy with the quality. I got a bunch of different colors as i was planing to shoot my rover as well. Most likely going to use the gunmetal grey with my BRZ and Rover. Got some hot pink and blue for some powerwheels and motorcycles. I also got the red for some possible accent stuff. Excited to try it out, just dont feel like spraying in my garage with the fumes and all.
