My "First 86" FR-S Almost Stolen Overnight at Dealership

So I take my beloved "1 of First 86" FR-S into the dealership on Friday for its 7500 mile service and to address some warranty issues.
So then yesterday, Saturday, I get a call from the dealership and from the major crimes detective to kindly let me know that someone, on camera surveillance, broke into the dealership overnight (by cutting and jumping the dealer back fence), went directly to the service bay where my unlocked FR-S was sitting inside and tried to steal it, by unsuccessfully trying to hot wire it from the inside of the car.
Going tomorrow (Monday) to the dealership to look at the damage done to the inside of the interior and to see all of the colorful wires that the a-hole pulled out while trying to jack the car, and also to report to the police any missing personal items.
Thank you Jesus for the dealership immediately taking full responsibility.

Merry Frickin Christmas. :iono:

GTB/ZR-1 12-23-2012 02:23 PM

That's not good--thankfully they didn't succeed in taking it...

wow! (w.t.f!)

ichitaka05 12-23-2012 02:27 PM

Wow~ that wouldn't been fun Xmas gift for ya.

Good thing it didn't get stolen. I wonder how thief foun out FRS in the bay? Did the thief look around or went to your car directly? If thief did go directly, maybe it was inside job? Idk I'm no detective, so I'm just guesstimating

Anyways, hope everything get all worked out

Kilzod 12-23-2012 02:27 PM

That's crazy! Sorry to hear that for you man :(

At least any damage caused by the culprit **should** be taken care of by the dealership, since it was in their care.

FRSFirestorm 12-23-2012 02:28 PM

That's bold as hell. Really wanting the car to do that.

chances are excellent, inside tip! who knows! give 'em an "a" for "balls",but it's really f**ked! scary sh*t! just sayin'

whataboutbob 12-23-2012 02:39 PM

Yeah IF it was an inside job I'd speculate it went something like this...

"Hey homie, I've got a sic new FR-S in here for service. Tell you what, I'll leave it unlocked in the bay. I've got the wiring diagram and it should be easy to get it goin..."

Back in the early 90's I had a Civic SI at the dealer for some work. When I picked it up "somehow" my Hi-Fonics 4 channel amp was missing...inside jobs do happen at dealerships.

ahquit 12-23-2012 02:39 PM

If it was an inside job you'd think they would have known where they kept the keys or would at least know that the car can't be hot wired without the smart key (I assume that's why it didn't work).

At least it's good that it happened at the dealership and not somewhere else so you know they'll take care of you.

Most of the dealer should keep the customer's keys in the safe lock (I wrote "should"). Also I was just guesstimating & not a fact. ;)

Either way, someone try to mess w our lovely car. That person should suffer some consiquences!

whaap 12-23-2012 04:04 PM

I don't know anything about your dealership but I know in the past dealers have tried to convince customers they (the dealership) were not responsible for damage to their automobiles. If the car is in their care, custody and control (as is the case here) they are responsible for the damages. Just don't let them tell you otherwise. Good luck.

luxmn 12-23-2012 04:49 PM

Wow if its an inside job the thief is dumb as a rock for 2 reasons: not asking where the cameras are and didn't even pretend to divert the attention to some other vehicles. No wonder they couldn't figure out the wiring.

Downside you should change dealer just to not give the thief a second chance.

Upside you forever has a story to tell.

First86 FTW :)

Karl07 12-23-2012 04:50 PM

I know here in Australia, the insurance won't cover ANYTHING (stolen, scratched, rocks thrown through windows, etc) unless the dealership/car yard has the vehicle fenced in. And that's where the owner will try and get out of it.
Most will just put up a chain and that's technically good enough.
Maybe you guys are the same way...because it was fenced in, insurance will cover it...the dealership wouldn't care less then, and for appearances would be happy to help...

CircuitJerk 12-23-2012 05:19 PM

I can't help but think this is just a glimpse of what's to come.
Think about it...

I don't think this is a sign of a wave of impending thefts...what is the value of stealing an FRS...?

...the gem of an engine (haha, CELS), the stock wheels only a mother could love, the sporty seats...?

Unlike the S2000 (coveted for really nice, swappable seats, and Integra Type-R/1999-2000 Civic Si for their highly desireable, also easily swappable motors...the FRS has no huge parts demand outside of the rather small owner base.

CircuitJerk 12-23-2012 05:51 PM

Ohh boy, LOL
Nevermind...
I'll bring this up in about 5 years, and we'll see if I had a clue...

Guff 12-23-2012 05:55 PM

I wonder why he didn't steal a more valuable car? Like a Lamd Cruiser or something? Don't car thieves sell the cars they steal?

I feel like stealing a cheap car is absurdly pointless.

CircuitJerk 12-23-2012 06:11 PM

Maybe he wanted an unrestricted test drive. I can't think of a better way to accomplish that. You know, on the spur of the moment.

bestwheelbase 12-23-2012 06:16 PM

@hgamit that's awful, but I'm glad it was not stolen or damaged further. If the dealership jerks you around, report back to us. Strength in numbers.

Fallen hero 12-23-2012 06:18 PM

Most car thieves work with chop shop so they steal the cars that are requested
Then the chop shop sells the parts ... Fenders, bumpers, mirrors ... Parts that get damaged in a car accident. to real "legitimate" body shops to do repairs everyone makes money the only person out of luck is the owner the stolen car having to wait for a replacement car or money ... Either way unless they had a buyer for the parts/car already stealing an frs would be pointless ... Or I could be wrong and the guy is as dumb and a brick and tried to steal it because the car look shinny and pretty duuuuuuuuuu

jarviz 12-23-2012 07:01 PM

What happens if it did get stolen? Does the dealership replace it with a brand new car?

RazorHawk 12-23-2012 07:11 PM

Shopkeepers insurance should cover the loss if it is in the car custody and control of the dealer, as long as they have it, but regardless, they are liable here, so dont let them out of it. Every penny is on them at this point, unless they have insurance to cover, which they should.

personally i would tell them to show the video to my lawyer, if i saw it i would track down the guy and well... yeah... scumbags...

dem00n 12-23-2012 08:46 PM

My insurance agent told me that a total of 7 FRS's have been stolen, note that this was in July when i bought the car. He stated it was the main reason the insurance was so expensive, since the car hasn't even been out for a year...

_hollywood 12-23-2012 09:09 PM

If this turns into another itr theft scenario consider mine sold, 13 yrs of owning hondas i wont deal with that anymore....

My last integra had a removable steering wheel with hub lock, ecu inside my house everynight, gps alarm and blocked in by a truck....still got messed with, lol

Man..... I would have just moved. Packing up all your stuff and moving to a better part of town or different city/town altogether just sounds easier lol

Same here, at least with Allstate. I was lucky many years ago when I had a car broken into and it happened to be in a locked yard. The shop ended up paying for everything anyways but Allstate mentioned it.

In the OPs case the car was in the service center/building it sounds like so that would have been covered anyways I'd bet.

Insurance gives you money based on the vehicles current value. You can fight for more and win sometimes.

I seriously doubt it will. I have *zero* concerns about mine getting stolen. Then again I'm not all that careful with the ITR either. Cars are meant to be used :)

Turbowned 12-24-2012 12:56 PM

That really sucks, man. Thank goodness he didn't get away with it!

Actually that's not the issue. People have located ITRs from far away, followed them after randomly seeing them, etc. They have been stolen in the middle of the night by breaking into the owners house to get into the garage. Multiple cars moved out of the way, etc.

It's stupid as hell but people go to great lengths to steal these 11-15 year old Hondas.

srtblake 12-24-2012 02:41 PM

minorities :iono:

invite only car meets for the ITR, no?

Celica00 12-24-2012 02:45 PM

good god man i'm sorry. good thing that sucker didnt get stolen. what a stupid car to steal anyways... there are only a few thousand in america. in utah there are only like 9 hot lavas here

enjoi23 12-25-2012 07:43 AM

...This car really is cursed

short of hauling it away on a "low boy" flat bed truck,it begs the question how
these cars are disappearing? comments? thoughts? using "wiring diagrams",and one hell of a lot of time? ? ?

Dake 12-26-2012 07:18 PM

Out of curiosity, was your car MT or AT?

hgamit 12-26-2012 08:23 PM
