What other cars have you considered?

Before deciding on the 86?

I wasn't really in the market for a car since my car was just over a year and a half old but I started itching. Thought I wanted a 120d coupe or maybe a 135i coupe but then I fell in love with the 86. No regrets at all...

sieglapj 12-20-2012 10:27 AM

Me too. Had a civic that I bought earlier this year. My wife saw the 86 and ordered me to buy it. Never in my plans. Oh well life's too short

whaap 12-20-2012 11:31 AM

For quite a while I had been itching for a Cayman but I just wouldn't allow myself to spend that kind of money. For several years I knew about the coming of the twins. I was wanting a coupe and the prototype FT-86 looked more than nice. I hoped when it finally came out that it would satisfy my wantsl. It did.

Mini Cooper S - my wife did not like it

used 370z - I needed emergency back seat just in case I need to ride with my baby

Wasn't even looking to buy, just popped into the dealer to have a look at the 86. Almost bought my brothers 2011 gti about a month ago though.

...looked at a Renault RS....NEVER BUY RENAULT!!!!...it's like dating a swimsuit model with aids...

Kev01 12-20-2012 12:56 PM

Mini Cooper S - not as good as the 86
Audi TT coupe - a bit bland
Mazda RX8 -engines don't last
BMW Z4 - no back seats
BMW 1 series - too normal
350z - no back seats
Porsche 911 (mid 80's) - not good as daily runner

This was when the budget was R200k. (all the above would have been second hand)
The 86 got my heart and I increased the budget and bought it... No regrets. This is my 5th toyota so I don't really think the others stood a chance of competing. Very happy with the choice as I wanted a toy not a means of transport.

We havent had any Renault models in Canada since ~ 1986. Just looked up the Magane Sport, nice interior, nice seats.

I think Ill race it in Gran Turismo for PS3.

ProTekk 12-20-2012 01:12 PM

Almost bought a 2013 Chevy 3500HD 2 days before I heard/saw of the FR-S/BRZ. So glad I didn't sign those papers.

"We havent had any Renault models in Canada since ~ 1986" - I rest my case...lol

Was in line for a 1M for year and a half..... No luck ...... And wasn't gonna fork out 200k more. Luckily for me the Toyota dealer was right across from my BMW dealer :D

Rossi 12-20-2012 03:55 PM

Was looking at a BMW 118i, the new model, then I saw the 86 while playing golf on day, couldn't take my mind of it the whole round, a week later got my car, will never look back :)

I was looking for either a team mate or a replacement for my high mileage 12y old Toyota Corolla RXI 6 spd and had several choices in my desired price bracket (R220k - R300k)

1. Hyundai Elantra 1.8 (Saw too many in Brakpan - scratch that! Good car though) :laughabove:
2. Fiat 500 Abarth EsseEsse (Seats weren't comfortable and the test car I drove felt absolutely knackered and not as fast as I expected)
3. BMW 118i (Ugly and overpriced in my opinion - not special)
4. Mini Cooper Clubman S (loved the cheeky side door - got chased away by the high labour costs - highest of virtually any mainstream brand and short 3y/75000km motorplan - also Peugeot motor - WTF!)
5. Toyota Auris TRD (Could have got it with 20% off - but with no leather, fancy rims or a decent exhaust - yawn!)

Used 135i coupe was also up there - but would cost way too much to run - lovely car to drive though!

Saw the FT86 II concept and began waiting patiently - absolutely had a fit of excitement when the pricing was launched and was in my range - started hunting for a dealer that had one to test unsuccessfully until a friend said go to Empire road - where I swiftly did and my mind was made up!

My logic is as follows - if you're going to replace your car - make sure you upgrade and compromise only on the little things that won't annoy you everyday. The 86 was a bit more than I wanted to spend, but it's a lot more car than any of the competitors listed above.

Crewzern 12-21-2012 02:01 AM

E92 M3 DCT ... a month after buying the 86 I found one :(

Thavash 12-21-2012 02:19 AM

Used BMW 325i / 335i ( E90 ) or new 320i (F30) with sport pack

That is extremely good advice. ALso one of the reasons why Ive replaced the radio pretty much immediately p my previous car had bluetooth, USB, etc etc so being faced with that Hilux radio every time I got into the car wasn't going to work.

I'm still missing things such as single tap lane change indicators but the rest of the car more than makes up for it.

The more I have to do with that radio the more I agree with - while it plays my MP3's quite well etc. it seems to be a left hand drive spec unit I think and has no RDS which is disappointing considering my friend's old RunX has RDS with the factory radio!

sav 12-21-2012 04:57 AM

Yep, have a look at the Yaris' radio - the top spec, much cheaper than the std spec 86 but it's got an awesome touch radio.

I know they had to keep costs down but then at least give me the option of a nice radio. For what it's worth, the new single cab Land Cruiser 79 has the option of a touch nav radio and I'm 99.999999% sure it would fit perfectly.

EDIT:

R11k. Crazy as it may sound I probably would have taken it as an option if it was offered to me when I bought the car.

Vic_RSA 12-21-2012 06:28 AM

Me too for sure! It says Toyota on it - thus it belongs there! ;)

sav 12-21-2012 11:53 AM

Yep, oh well I'm still waiting for the Parrot. I'd rather drop R11k on that than the OEM Toyota one.

chandz05 12-25-2012 12:15 AM

I was debating between a Civic si and a Scion tC. And then the twins stole my heart:wub:
No regrets with my BRZ!

bum-man 12-25-2012 12:26 AM

Considered a Hyundai Elantra, strange cross shop I know...

RL_BRZ 12-25-2012 12:38 AM

Honda Civic Si
Honda S2000
WRX STI
Then I choose BRZ for good fuel economy and fun to drive... I am happy with my decision...

We sold our paid for Nationally competitive 2002 HS Mini Cooper to clear some garage space for the FRS. Our Mini is missed on a daily basis. We had been considering trying another class for a few years and the list was quite long. CaymanS, Elise/Exige, M3, 1M, Mcoupe, S4, STi, Abarth and few others were being tossed around.

At the end of the day the twins provided the greatest return on investment. By return, I mean fun and potential for the money spent. I am confident the twins will be nationally competitive in SCCA autocross in CS, RTR or STX and I think you will see at least a couple wins from them next year. It's going to be a fun ride!

Exactly what they were meant for, good luck!

Best modern FWD hatch I've driven to date was the Civic Type-R. Huge fun even if it wasn't as quick or powerful as the competition.
