Radio Upgrade
Hi,
Anyone planning on replacing the radio in their 86? I am considering installing one of these "Chinese" DVD units. Have one in my Prado for a few years now and still works great. I vowed never to import directly again due to difficulty in communicating with China. (reinforced by a current work experience as well). Got a quote from Electromannsa for R5499 including maps. I also see a place in Edenvale that installs them for R4999.(see back of car magazine). Anyone dealt with these guys? |
The only reason that I am going to replace is because the current radio does nt do RDS. 5 grand fitted sounds cheap

Here you go:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19322 The OEM radio is beyond horrible. |
Bought a 10 inch low profile sub and a set of midrange speakers today. Hope to have it fitted by the weekend.

Hey guys, if any of you have upgraded yr sound systems yet would appreciate some pics to see how they fit and the makes. Trying to get a plug and play system with a good fit. A lot of options out there but they never show any pics of it installed. So annoyed that the OEM radio is green background.........TSA thought out so many apsects except the radio!

There are 3 popular units that fit in the FRS/BRZ/86, which you can find in the audio section of the forum as well as the units SAV has indicated on the Africa forum.
As far as installations and equipment go, there are many types of installs, based on what you want to spend. Keep weight and power draw in mind as this car needs to be as light and have little power draw from the battery. |
Has anyone had a look at this:

That Kenwood is pretty much the same as mine, except it fits perfectly. Good radio if you want the "OEM" look, it doesn't have a lot of features though but it's got what you need and it's easy to use.
|
Any one know what the quality is like on the Toyota replacement jobbie? Sav, what did your Kenwood set you back?

I was also looking at the JVC and Sony units which are probably nicer but I specifically wanted something with a volume knob since our cars don't have steering controls. I must say though, it sounds a LOT better than the OEM unit. EDIT: I see the Kenwood Toyota unit doesn't have a knob. Pity. |
This is the one I have:
http://www.soundslimited.co.za/index...roducts_id=481 The illumination is customizable to match the car so I'm assuming the one you've posted would be the same. |

If you've heard distortion with the OEM radio then it was probably the radio clipping and not the speakers distorting. |
I wonder how many OEM radios are lying in garages. Must try sell mine to a Ethios buyer. What u think they worth. R3000?
|
I wouldn't pay anything for it to be honest, there are too many better and cheaper aftermarket options.
|
Ok radio question answered...
Next question: Has anyone installed bluetooth / handsfree kit and if yes what? Parrot? Apart from that new Parrot unit still coming to SA are there other options that are radio and handfree in one? :sigh: |
Yep, the Kenwood has got Bluetooth and can also play and control music via A2DP.
It came with an external mic which they've fitted by the dome light, I still need to move it to a better location. |
BTW. The Parrot got delayed again, their last response said it was "coming in 2013". It's really testing my patience...

@sav
R4700 sounds like a good price. Who Installed yours and what did it cost? Do you have a pic of it installed in the car? |

There are pics on page 2 of the link I've posted earlier. It definitely doesn't look as good as the one made for Toyota but for me it was a case of function over form. |

Cool, remember to fit the tiny USB bluetooth dongle. The rear USB port is for bluetooth only.
|
radio fitted. as you said not as nice as oem fit but good enough. radio is awesome. speakers are still shit. will upgrade soon... bluetooth works well... will consider garmin ad on / upgrade as well. think R5k is a bit too much but dude at shop said kenwood is strugling to sell so price might come down... all in all happy!
|
Excellent!! Where did they install the microphone?
R5k is way too much for the GPS add-on so lets hope they drop the price. |

radio and mic placement. shit cell photos sorry...
|
Nice! That's probably a better spot for the mic than where mine's at currently.
I see you don't have a background image on the radio yet? |
It's easy to install the mic in the factory location. I have no issues with my Alpine mic there.

Or something like that... Also set the speaker size in the settings, it makes a nice difference. |

I have a BRZ but I am guessing it's in the same location. I can't post a pic right now but it's in the headliner by the dome light. There is a plastic piece that has a couple slits in it. It pops out and mic is attached to it.
|
|
Nice price... A helluva lot cheaper than the other offerings so far...
|
Check the shipping price. ;) (and R520 duties)
You may as well get it from dx.com since that's probably where they're buying their stock from. If not from alibaba.com |
