our doors are heavy...

heavier than i'm used to at least. any reason for this? you'd think they want them as light as possible.

tuckdaddy 12-11-2012 02:55 PM

It's a coupe so the doors are huge they'd be smaller if it were a 4 door sedan. I would like lighter doors though but it's not a big deal to me.

ichitaka05 12-11-2012 03:33 PM

You think FR-S doors are heavy? Try Impreza 2.5RS coupe! Now that's HEAVY! Specially windy day, it's hellova workout! lol

Dake 12-11-2012 03:34 PM

They're big and an important part of the stiffening of the overall structure. You think they're heavy now, just wait until they do the convertible version.

CaptainSlow 12-11-2012 03:35 PM

Safety, also

GTB/ZR-1 12-11-2012 03:37 PM

Heavy? Take out the crash beams--that'll lighten 'em up some...

Nevermore 12-11-2012 03:37 PM

My sister drives a SLK230 and that car has some heavy doors, probably heavier than the FR-S doors. Ironically, they're so heavy that she shattered her driver side window once just shutting it. Guess what was the first thing I pointed out to her when I showed her the car?

Tim_Asphalt_FRS 12-11-2012 03:39 PM

The doors on my 350Z were way heavier.

Nope. I guess I could've been a bit more specific. The FR-S windows do something to prevent what happened to her window, that her windows do not do.

Guff 12-11-2012 04:08 PM

Infiniti G35 doors are HEAVY! Much heavier than the FRS'.

But yeah, safety stuff, window stuff, speaker stuff etc. is what makes it so hefty. If you are going racecar, you could definitely get rid of door guts to cut weight, but if you're not, I think it's fine how it is.

nab335 12-11-2012 04:09 PM

dude wtf what.. these doors are featherweight you clearly probably havent been in many cars in your
life lol.

I blame @Guff. When I do, it all make sense to me. Lol

bestwheelbase 12-11-2012 04:21 PM

Why hasn't somebody just removed the doors and gone for the Jeep Wrangler look?

This is on my list of things to do if/when I cage an FRS and use it for promotional purposes.

bestwheelbase 12-11-2012 04:22 PM

@ichitaka05 is just mad his girlfriend won't teach him how to work on his car.

It's okay, I'll let Giccin take all of y'all! ;)

Back on topic, I'm interested to seeing the actual lbs of FRS door weight

Really it was just me fishing for more pictures of your girl working on cars. :iono:

FYI, that isn't my gf. It's my friend's wife. LMAO

Anyone who owns FRS/BRZ willing to take off the door and weight em on the weight scale?

Revolution states about 20kg for the alone for each OEM door. I believe that is just the shell, doesn't include glass, wiring, speakers, etc.

I was going to say something about G35. Those are some LONG and HEAVY doors.

bebopblues 12-11-2012 04:59 PM

I get pissed off when my friend slams my door when he closes it. So I warn everyone that gets in my car to take it easy on the door and not slam it like an SUV or truck.

FYI wow. :laughabove:

Vorshlag has begun to weigh stuff but I don't think they've pulled doors yet. Their camber plates look rad.

empower-auto 12-11-2012 05:23 PM

Wanna feel a heavy door? Chevy Cobalt coupe. Game over.

saiyajinimports 12-11-2012 05:29 PM

i think the doors on my supra are way heavier then the FRS.

speedy racer 12-11-2012 05:33 PM

These doors feel light weight compared to my Lexus SC300. The SC got to be heaviest doors on a sport coupe. After so many years, the SC door hinge(looks like hinge off an airplane) has to be replaced because of the weight.

raz0rbladez909 12-11-2012 05:34 PM

TC doors are pretty bad too, a coworker of mine has one of those crappy vertical door kits and the shocks are going out on it, feels like I'm doing shoulder presses at the gym lol

czar07 12-11-2012 11:21 PM

SC300/400 doors cannot be beaten in weight + size. Game over GG

This ^^ and T Tops on the day I take delivery

Buckeye 12-11-2012 11:50 PM

I actually think the door operation feeling is too light for American customer market tastes. Retainability on a slope isn't so good as the door check could have a heavier European detent feeling.

PM has a point. Scion could have made the interior structure from a magnesium/aluminum alloy for lightness. Cost would have gone up a few thousand though. I expect electric door openers with sensors will be common in a few years.

Neziah 12-12-2012 11:54 AM

I like it, it is nice to have a car that sounds like your closing something when you shut the door.

reeves 12-12-2012 12:25 PM

No one's really WEIGHED the door have they?
So.. is the door really THAT heavy (relative to other coupes)?.. or is the HINGE (or whatever keeps the door open) just really weak!? Which would cause the door to appear heavy.

muffinman 12-12-2012 05:21 PM

has anyone taken apart the door to replace the speaker? in a few cars that i was upgrading the door speakers in there was a flattened weight stuck to the inside of the door. it looked like a flat piece of lead maybe 4X8 inches. maybe manufacturers r adding weight to make the door feel heavier? maybe cause it makes a more solid thunk when it closes? idk. tried to peel it off in 1 car, but it was stuck on there very well and i could only reach in through where the speaker was taken out of

i can't imagine a car going for low weight like the frs would be adding pointless wait to the door just for it to feel more solid. at least i hope not

i wouldnt think so either but there they were when i looked inside the door lol. maybe they can get away with using thinner gauge sheetmetal in the door, then add the weight so that it doesn feel cheap as shit. i would guess each of them was 3-4 ounces- just guesstimating by picturing lead fishing sinkers rolled to that size
