Risky Devil BRZ - Daily / Drift car

Picked this bad boy up two weeks ago after about a 4 month wait... Absolutely love the car, but can't stand driving anything stock. I picked up the wheels the day after I bought the car, and the coilovers about a week later...

Here's a little install/review of the Stance Super Sport coilovers I put on:

And here's a few quick shots I took after the coilover install:

I still need to mess with tire sizing, probably lower it a bit more, and get an alignment, but I think it came together pretty awesome for not much money/work... More to come!

Risky devil doing it right in Chicago as always. Keep it up!

ATL BRZ 12-10-2012 10:46 PM

I think it's low enough already, maybe too low depending on your daily drives. I think your camber is excessive in the rear and some adjustable rear lower control arms would be a good investment. After lowering mine and dialing out the excess rear camber with LCAs the car became oversteery again like stock with wider wheels and sticky tires.

Timtamtt 12-10-2012 10:53 PM

Wheel specs? And how much are those coilovers? Looking good so far!

I think it's too high... I don't think the camber is excessive... And I'm taking the 255/35's off the rear in favor of crappy 225/40's.

I may get the rear lower control arms to make the wheels more flush, or I may just space the rears.

18x9.5 +38. Coilovers are about $1300 retail.

Timtamtt 12-10-2012 11:08 PM

Get 40 sidewalls 225 so stretch and moar camber. Like -7 degrees. Hellaflush haha. That'll be somewhat like my setup till I can afford some rpf1s hahaha then I'll go function > form

ebphoto 12-10-2012 11:14 PM

spray tint tails?

..think more stretch and less camber would make the wheels look sickk.

The front has 225/40/18, I think I'm going to put those in back and get 225/35/18's for the front. I won't be adding any camber... This is not a function>form setup, the car will be driven hard and tracked.

Yeah, painted... Still not sure on whether i'll be straightening camber or spacing, but smaller rear tires are happening for sure.

Looks good mang. Any rubbing on the front?

ATL BRZ 12-10-2012 11:39 PM

Well I'll be interested to see how it performs on a road course with even less ride height than that, less suspension travel and that much rear camber with stretched tires. This car tends to understeer at the limit when it's much lower and stiffer without R compounds, even then it requires lots of driving skill to really get the most out of it. Check this thread out: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10643

Specifically, regarding camber:
Quote:

"One thing we noticed is that the car has a fairly low roll center and if the car is lowered much at all the lower control arms will point upward with the roll center quickly ending up below ground. This will do two things that are not so great; the car will have a large roll couple and a strong tendency to roll which must be countered with stiff springs and/or swaybar. However the FR-S does have a very low center of gravity due to the low slung boxer engine so perhaps this may still be tolerable.

Next due to the angularity of the lower arm when lowered, the front suspension will lose negative camber under roll which will reduce grip and even lead to understeer in a low car unless a lot of static negative camber is dialed in or roll is greatly reduced with stiff suspension. Big negative camber hurts braking traction and causes the car to be road crown sensitive and tramline on cracks and grooves. Being too stiff hurts mechanical grip. Whiteline if you are reading this, this car really needs your long shank ball joints and tie rod ends to correct the roll center. Make some right away please. Maybe your Subaru kit might fit. The best solution before the aftermarket responds might be to not lower the car more than 1.5” or so."

What's a roll center?
Fairly good reference article

I like the red tails against the red paint.

Given that, surely you'd have learned by now that's not the fastest way around a track. As an HPDE instructor, I fail to see the point in drifting at track days that aren't dedicated to drifting, but whatever floats your boat. Just trying to help in case you ever wanted to improve your lap times instead of sliding around for fun, which I totally support either way, just not at normal track days where performance driving is the focus.

Agreed! This one will look good sideways as a dedicated street/drift setup.

I don't care what the fastest way around the track is. I'll be drifting at drift days, when did I ever express any interest or plans to go to a normal track day?

In your coilover install thread I assumed you meant the car would see normal track days as well. I still need to check out a drift day with my stock wheels and tires so I can learn the illest way around a track. Looking forward to seeing more pics.

Wow, so after all that, I get a warning from the moderators for "insulting another member", and they delete half of my thread.

Thanks guys, what a fucking joke.

That's right. No matter how warranted any member may think it is to insult another member, it won't be tolerated.

Report any bad behavior and let us deal with it instead of violating site rules by insulting.
