Any MMA fans?

Watching tonight's UFC on FX/Fox.

Some great fights so far tonight.

Figured I'd start an MMA discussion thread.

Yup Benson vs. Diaz about to start I think Benson is going to take the win.

wallace03 12-08-2012 11:43 PM

bj should have stayed retired, or at 155.

Agreed. Lately, everytime BJ has come back and said "I'm in the best shape, I feel like the best BJ", he keeps looking worse and worse.

Burrcold 12-09-2012 11:15 AM

Yeah Rory really beat the crap out of BJ, to the point where I almost felt bad for BJ (he started to look very defeated mentally by mid 2nd round). I felt the same way when he fought GSP...and his corner finally threw in the towel.

zigzagz94 12-09-2012 05:45 PM

Went to the fights this weekend and it was amazing to actually be there in person...well worth the money to see it live. Sucks to see so many of my favorites like BJ and Shogun (PRIDE FTW) getting owned by this new breed of fighters but the sport keeps evolving and the old school guys are becoming too one dimensional and can't keep up.

BJ said after the fight he was done but who knows that may have just been post fight depression or locker room rumors. If he does fight agian it will be at 155. Even then though Ben Henderson looked DOMINANT against Diaz and I don't think BJ would've done any better.

I watched the entire card, Facebook to the main event. This was overall the best card I have seen this year. It is messed up that the UFC expects me to pay $55 for a PPV card with one big time fight, but gives away a great card like this.

The UFC is having too many events and their fight card depths have become paper thin. This is why I only pay to watch a couple PPVs per year and don't feel bad streaming everything else.

Even at 155 lbs Penn never looked huge or ripped. I don't have anything to back me up on this, but I think he could make 145 lbs if he took his nutrition seriously and really tried to cut weight. He looks like a naturally soft 170-175 lbs when not getting ready for a fight. He looks like he cuts 10-15lbs for 155 lb fights. I have never seen him after a weigh-in looking substantially bigger. Guys like Rory Mac, Forrest Griffin, Jones, Aldo, and others look a lot different from their weigh-in.

Penn is still one of my favorite fighters, but he needs to $hit or get off the pot, 155 lbs or retire. It is sad to see him end his amazing career by getting his butt whooped. With Edgar gone from lightweight he could make another run for the belt. I would love to see BJ Penn vs. Nate Diaz: the revenge.

Agreed, it's been a long time if ever that I've been so thoroughly entertained by a card top to bottom.

They should've combined the heavyweight title fight with this card, and then would have been KILLER!

Also would be kind of nice as it's the sequel to their first fight which was on Fox, so seeing the 2nd one on Fox would be good for casual fans.

ironchef 12-14-2012 12:27 PM

Heads up tonight is the TUF smashes finale on FX, and tomorrow is the regular TUF finale also on FX.

Only watched the Lombard vs. Palhares fight. Lombard looked like a monster, but Palhares is a headcase. Too bad because I thought Palhares would be fighting for the title someday. Obviously I was very wrong.

Still need to see the Nelson vs. Mitrione fight.

Any of the other fights any good? Didn't really want to watch the TUF guys fight. They are always disappointing.

JayNutter 12-28-2012 08:36 PM

UFC 155 tomorrow. Facebook prelims starting at 3:30 PT, then FX prelims, then PPV (free for me). Hope I get to see all the fights. I want Cain to win, so he can beat the crap outta Overroid, but can't see him beating JDS.

JDS vs Ubereem is a better match up in my opinion. It would be the first true striking test for JDS.

not so much, but i was at the fight between big country, and the gangly dude that he knocked out really fast. and i got paid to be there.

Mr.Jay 12-29-2012 04:37 AM

I think JDS takes this again tho Cain will bring a much more aggressive fight to him this time.

Cain has issues with adapting. He does everything exactly like how he learns in training and often eats punches to achieve his goals and thats not something you can do with JDS

JayNutter 12-31-2012 04:10 PM

WOW. I wasn't counting out Cain, but I never would have expected a one-sided beat down like that. I figured JDS would evade the take downs and counter Cain with a hook or an uppercut. JDS needs to work on his counter punching with Liddell.

That was how I would expect a fight with Cain vs. Overreem to go because Overreem can't last beyond the first or second round. Seeing JDS go 5 rounds in prior fights, I never dreamed he would get that gassed in the first through third round.

Mr.Jay 12-31-2012 06:17 PM

Much more one sided than I thought. Didn't expect jds to gas after two rds at all.

JDS is still the #2 HW IMHO. This will make a good trilogy. Not sure who I would put money on for their third fight.

It was such a one sided beating though, they shouldn't do an instant rematch. In the event it was a flash ko like the first one I understand, but not this one.

Would be interesting to see what Ubereem could bring to the table. We know he won't necessarily out muscle Cain as Brock couldn't either. Though Alistair did handle Brock with ease...

Agree 100% on instant rematches unless they end in a draw or horrible split decision. JDS should win at least one match in the top 5 before getting another title shot. Not sure who he should face next, but Overreem, Cromier, Barnett, or Mark Hunt would be good fights to watch (not saying these are all top 5 fighters).

ironchef 01-01-2013 06:15 PM

I have a feeling unless Big Silva catches Overeem off guard then Overeem wins that with ease.

So, good chance that Overeem is next for Cain (seems like 99% of MMA fans think the same). I'd rather Cormier go down to 205.

I want Mark Hunt vs Pat Barry.

Barnett vs the winner of JDS/Silva (assuming he loses to Overeem).

Winner of that vs the winner of Cain/Overeem.

JayNutter 01-02-2013 01:43 PM

I would like to see Barnett have one fight against someone like Hunt before being thrown into a possible top contender match.

I really want to see JDS vs. Barnett/Cromier/Overeem (if he loses) before Silva (if he loses).

Looking at JDS, Cain, and Cromier it looks like all of them could make it to 205lbs if they decided to cut the weight. Look at a picture of Cain with Ryan Bader, and you can see that Bader looks generally bigger and more muscular.

I think Cain could MAYBE hit 205, but hes a big guy. JDS I don't think can make 205, hes too big. He's already pretty ripped at 240+, not much body fat he could lose to make the cut to 205 easy.

Cheer on Gabriel Gonzaga as he versus Ben Rothwell on FX tonight.

I don't think anyone wanted to see Bisbing vs. Silva. That wouldn't even be competitive. I hope this opens the door for Weidman or Rashad Evans.

I'd rather watch Weidman instead of Evans. I understand Evans has the star power to bring in bigger ppv numbers, and that's what Anderson wants. But, I doubt it would be competitive. He didn't really put up a fight vs Jones, and Silva is a better striker.
