Thoughts on ease of speaker replacement?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering what your thoughts are on the ease of speaker replacement. I have an 04 Solara and to upgrade the speakers I had to take off both door panels for the front speakers, and for the rears, off came the seat belt door attachments, all interior rear side panels, and finally the rear deck panel. It seems toyota makes it very difficult to access the speakers in a lot of their cars. (Don't know about Subaru)

Lets hope to access the speakers you just pop off their covering panel to make audio upgrades cake.

Dave-ROR 11-27-2011 06:08 PM

Door panels will need to be removed beyond that who knows at this point.

Slide 11-27-2011 06:10 PM

The ones in the dash look like they are going to be a bitch!!

Hopefully it is easy to remove the mesh and they are screwed in the from the top...!!! if not i don't think i will ever replace them!

ZetaVI 11-27-2011 06:17 PM

From the mega gallery it looks like the door panel won't be that easy to get off. Regardless, I don't think I will replace the speakers anytime soon.

Levi 11-27-2011 06:50 PM

I am not sure whether I'll take tha race trim or high end trim.

Kostamojen 11-27-2011 07:38 PM

I'm hoping the base model only comes with two door speakers and thats it.

VenomRush 11-27-2011 08:32 PM

theres speakers on the dash?? didnt see those

There is also two speakers in the rear shelf too. Well they look like speakers.

A total of 8 speakers.

The three gauges replace it. Look at almost any other pic of the interior to see it.

As pointed out, there are speakers next to the rear passengers. Whatever those are in the rear deck, they aren't speakers. They never looked like speaker grills anyways to me.

The picture he posted has the gauges, not the radio. If you didn't know the radio was there normally you wouldn't know where it was..

i think those are supposed to be the holes for the roll cage

edit: nvm. that smaller one looks like a tweeter. i guess the holes for the rollcage will be on the "barebones" model

I don't think the holes made it to production.

I agree but I'm sure it would have been a trade off.. how many people are really going to put cages in these cars? A few for sure, especially for a one-model spec series, but those same people are already destroying the car from a value perspective, cutting a hole in the dash like they would do with every other car isn't going to be any real annoyance to them.

That rear speaker looks tiny, like maybe 4" or maybe 5 1/4. Aside from the dash mounted speakers, the door and rear should be a straightforward swap with removing screws and popping the clips.

When Moto mentioned the roll cage statement, he later confirmed on his FB that he was referring to the dash being recessed and not actual holes in the dash for a cage to go through. The holes on the VLN were probably last minute mod.

Agreed. Those should work for rear fill, which is fine. The three way setup if done right up front could eliminate the need for those rear speakers anyways. I'll be sure to fade mine all the way to the front for testing. I'm still undecided whether or not I want a system in this car and if I do how crazy I want to go.. whatever I do will be easily removable for track/autocross usage. I currently leave the amps in the ITR when I track/autocross it though.. too lazy to remove it.

Makes sense on the holes. VLN just cut the dash like any other race car would have done which makes sense.

I already acknowledged that they were not speakers...Not sure what they are though...

Looks at the Lexus IS-F trunk...you can see those same things either side of the brake light..Also the ISF has goosenecks in the trunk....They did not go cheap on the Toyota 86.....Nice

That is sort of a bad design to have the dash mounted speakers. Even if they are polypropylene, direct sunlight will eventually take its toll.

On my GSR, I had 2 10's with the amps mounted on the box so when I need to remove it, both could come out at the same time. For this car, I don't plan to upgrade the speakers or put subs; those days are behind me.

I know! the 86 has strongarm lifts! That bumps up the price to 23-25K!

I run 1 8" sub. I use it to fill out the sound. Everything else is run actively crossed and front stage only.

Sun can take it's toll, but it will present a solid sound stage at a good height, so that's a plus. Insane reflections though so it'd have to be setup right. Normally I prefer higher mounted mid/tweet but firing across, not bouncing at the window

Levi 11-29-2011 08:26 AM

There are 2 speakers on front door panels for base trim, and 6 speaker for high trim: 2 on front door panels (250 mm), 2 on rear side panels (160 mm) and 2 tweeters on the dash (85 mm).

SHINCHU86 11-29-2011 10:37 AM

if those rears are anything like the 4th gen camaro i have, you need to pull the whole panel to access them. lots of people put midbass there with good results. depends how deep a speaker that will allow for though.

i plan on just a 10" sub. nothing crazy. just added to the factory system will be fine. thats how im running my camaro with the factory "monsoon audio" upgrade plus an infinity powered 10".

this setup is a TON better than the original AE86! haha 4" dash speakers pointed at your shins, and 4" rears pointed at the roof. THAT needed an upgrade! this should sound just fine. my wife's '11 altima sounds great and its just the 2.4S with normal audio. "new" speakers usually sound fine these days. at least for the upper half of the spectrum. ;)

however im getting worried about rear leg room. my kids seats will BARELY fit, and they would have to sit indian-style! and speaking of, those are definitely child seat anchors at the rear deck. they pop up like they did on my GS300.

I suspect that's wrong. Crap OEM quality ~3.4" speakers will should like shit on the highs. They may be combining a mid and a tweeter in that dash measurement. The photos clearly show it's a 3 way setup, unless they made a fake grill covering for looks. 250mm = 9.8" woofer, the grill opening doesn't look ANYWHERE near that large. The largest factory door speakers I know of are 8". The rear speaker grills look like 4", 160mm is really a 6.5" woofer. If they are basing the measurements on cone diamter only not including surround and stuff then the door speakers would have to be 10" minimum to fit the 250, dash would be 3.5-3.75, which could mean a 3" and .75" if they are combining those into "one" speaker in the count.

But still, those grills aren't showing those sizes for the doors and back speakers.

You aren't the only family man wanting the GT86 to work as a DD. Many others on here who would like a S2000, 370z, MX-5 but couldn't due to being 2 seaters. Will have to see how much room the back offers for a car seat/ small kid.

Sully 11-29-2011 10:50 AM

Not too worried about how difficult it is to swap out speakers for better ones.

It's probably only something that needs to be done once. It's okay if it takes a full day of work.
