You thought Jeremy would immediately pick the most expensive or most powerful car here, didn’t you? Well, he didn’t… he picked one of the cheapest and least powerful. But he had his reasons. The Toyota GT86 is a new way of looking at an old problem: how to have fun in a reasonably priced car. Now, TG has a long association with cheap thrills, but the GT86 tries very hard to re-educate a generation of hot-hatch motorists on the joys of rear-wheel drive. And it succeeds, by being exciting, relatively cheap and accessible to mere mortals. It’s good, people. Be excited.

“I like the GT86 because it’s come barrelling into the bottom end of the marketplace with a big dirty smile on its face and a suggestion in the way it stands that it wants to have fun with your middle parts. It’s a car designed for one thing only: fun.”

Find out the full story of how Jeremy fell in love with a Toyota that features Prius parts in Top Gear magazine's Awards Issue: out now

Best line that he says:

"There's no need to drive anything else."

Amazing.

Great find. Thanks!

Yet another honor for Toyota, Subaru, and Tada-san. Once they do the official Top Gear review, this car will explode in popularity. Let's just hope they can build enough!

Dispect 12-07-2012 02:09 PM

Love jc

Well, they kinda did. :)

DarkSunrise 12-07-2012 02:14 PM

I mean, on the actual Top Gear show... Unless I missed it? I know they showed a part on the worst cars film and this little clip but I'm not sure how many people watch these compared to the full reviews in the main show. As I said a long time ago, I really hope they do a full challenge/road trip with these cars. :D

ngabdala 12-07-2012 02:22 PM

These awards keep us in good resale-value territory :)

Yeah, true. I'm interested in seeing the lap time Stig make on their track

I don't always agree with JC but he got it right on this one. "There's no need to drive anything else"

As the accolades keep stacking up it's for sure that more and more people are going to be wanting what we already have and that can only be good.

LIKEABOSS 12-07-2012 04:41 PM

High praise!

Tt3Sheppard 12-07-2012 04:43 PM

Maybe now that our car has been reviewed and praised by Top Gear people will start to respect it for what it represents...nah probably not.

ZetaVI 12-07-2012 04:55 PM

JC said it was one of the most fun cars he drove in years. That pretty sums it up for me.

I'm hoping it'll do quicker than a 1:30. I doubt it. 1:30 might be the highest it'll get.

They kinda did. They had it on the new "The Worst Car In The History Of The World" DVD that JC and May did. As you can guess, it wasn't one of the worst haha.

rice_classic 12-07-2012 06:12 PM

I agree with the person in the comments section in the link:

"The GT86 should be the next reasonably priced car."

That would raise the bar a bit eh? I think it would be a worthy investment for ToyaBaru to get their car on this show as the RPC.

TOMIMOTO 12-07-2012 06:15 PM

Does anybody have a link to his review off of the DVD? YouTube took it down.

Anyone who watches Top Gear is already aware of this car by now. I doubt that sales will change as a result of an appearance on the show. They are already selling every one they can make. Availability is the limiting factor, not exposure.

Yeah but Top Gear has a way of getting people really excited about cars. If they see a raving review by Jeremy Clarkson, they're going to much more seriously consider buying one. Even women watch that show where they may not normally follow car news.

Jordo! 12-07-2012 09:40 PM

Nice -- congrats!

I'm still surprised that Jeremy -- as opposed to, say, Hammond -- loves it so much. That totally seems like a car for the Hamster. He tends to like the tossable cars, Jeremy the uber-powerful ones, and James the lux. Go figure.

Definitely looking forward to seeing it on (the next season of?) Top Gear.

Only if they make an exception and throw on some good tires...otherwise, the track time won't really mean much.

Enemies 12-07-2012 11:24 PM

Some of the comments on that website were giving me a headache. People who have never sat inside the car trying to tell others it's horrible.

VZ86 12-08-2012 01:20 AM

Aww, look at that giddy grin!

bebopblues 12-08-2012 01:52 AM

I guess his check from toyota cleared. :bellyroll:

"the grip is poor, by which I mean excellent" - Jeremy Clarkson

Nah, I was expecting this from Clarkson since he adored the RX8 too (citing many of the strengths that the FT86 also has).

And if the three of them don't show up with an FRS, BRZ, and GT86, it'll be the biggest wasted opportunity in tv history.;)

The FRS is not sold in the UK and lots of us were not really aware of Scion (before the version was announced) so I doubt it will make an appearance.

schoenberg 12-08-2012 12:22 PM

I'm keeping a copy of this article in my glove compartment for whenever a friend calls the car "impractical."

In other news the Mazda CX5 won COY in Japan.........
