I lost over 25 lbs in less than an hour...

And I didn't even work up a sweat... lol Had to slightly modify the positive terminal, or it would have taken abt 15 mins.

I just kept the stock tray & OEM tie-down for now. Saved 25.5 lbs.

These lithium batts are serious. I had this in my GT-R, so plenty of cranking power for the FR-S.

86BRZ 12-06-2012 08:46 PM

The Brand / model and price please?

fluffy-reindeer-slayer 12-06-2012 08:48 PM

looking into doing this on my car where did you get the battery and how much, also what modification was needed for the terminal?

2manysubies 12-06-2012 08:49 PM

No charging system changes? Just a "direct" bolt in?? If you have to charge it, is there a different charger? Curious.

I also everyone above lives in warm climate... How bout cold climate?

googled "L680 lithium battery" and came up with this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/lpp-l680

yikes, $899.

Mikepage 12-06-2012 08:52 PM

Good Modification for the money compare to a normal battery but it's expensive when your OEM battery is brand new, maybe a good choice when you need to replace the OEM battery when she's dead.

You can lose more, maybe up to 50lbs with this model : http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680series.htm

150$ for the PCM680

Hanakuso 12-06-2012 08:55 PM

Title made me think this was spam

50 lbs? The stock batt is just under 30 lbs.

Here's the weight.

Also, these batts LAST...

I have a Shorai Lithium battery that I used this year in my Miata for autocrossing that I'm thinking about trying in my BRZ next year. Only weighs 24 oz and cost less than $150

#87 12-06-2012 09:30 PM

Came for pics of rolled over 86.

Where are they

Kido1986 12-06-2012 09:35 PM

He handed me that battery last night and I nearly shit and how light it was.

I want one but that price... it wont be the single most expensive mod on my car for the foreseeable future hahah

GTB/ZR-1 12-06-2012 09:58 PM

Not sure how it would do in a cold climate. I do know that I would go 1-2 wks @ a time between starting the GT-R, and it cranked as hard as it did if I had started it the day before.

I unbolted the end of the terminal, where it goes to the post, then had to take a 3/8 bit to slightly hog out the ends, so I could bolt them directly to the batt. Worked like a charm.

I had other L/W batts in my Evo (Odyssey etc), but they died quickly. These will last 4-5 years per manufacturer.

How long do they last from typical use?

vubaru 12-06-2012 10:18 PM

I saw some similar batteries at SEMA 2012, and looks like Lithium Ion lightweight batteries are getting more and more popular.

The weight savings are good; but 25 lbs for $899 is pretty steep. I hope the pricing comes down as manufacturers are able to achieve economy of scale and the products become more widely available.

There are lightweight lithium ion batteries available that will work in our cars for a heckuva lot less than $900, that will save 25 lbs or more.

vubaru 12-06-2012 10:27 PM

Cool deal. It looks like I need to do some research, although this is a mod I'll leave for when the OEM battery dies.

GTB/ZR-1 12-06-2012 10:30 PM

The reason I 'bucked up' was that I needed to take as much weight out of my car as possible (SCCA Solo on National level), so... KA-ching! Actually, Titan has been bery, bery good to me on pricing--so me no pay $900-1k. ;-)

RRnold 12-06-2012 10:36 PM

Whoa, you guys ain't playing with your $750-900 batteries! :eyebulge:

Asterisked Accolade 12-06-2012 10:39 PM

I'd likely go for an 11lb. battery from Braille Battery. $700 is just too steep for something like that, IMO.

Braille batteries are just rebranded Deka batteries with a different label and marked up quite a bit.

vubaru 12-06-2012 10:53 PM

I saw the Brailles at SEMA 2012 and liked them. Did not know they were knock offs, bummer.

More power to those who want to get really lean by getting lightweight batteries, not criticizing that at all. And more power to those who can get inside-deal prices.

I am an average Joe, have no connections, and tend to pay full price for everything unless it's a GB, promotion, or used part. That's still a nice mod to be aware of, though, OP, so I appreciate the post.

kanundrum 12-06-2012 10:57 PM

Ill be going with this most likely, I know the owner and we can get group buys if people are really intersted

Battery ...sooner or later ... Eventually .... Will die. Spending $800 on this need to think twice.

Oh i see. I presume you can go to an official Deka Battery website and buy them for less(?)

Lol, I only had to think once. For people who race/track though, it's a no brainer I'm sure. Burning your tires up in a a few weekend afternoons also is something I would never do, but these guys do it all the time and all those tires costs more in the long run than that battery replacement once or twice.

track_warrior 12-06-2012 11:56 PM

Looks good man, i have a different setup.

Does any one know which Deka model to replace? There are a few different models listed on Amazon.

Braille or Deka, cut 20+ lbs in a much lower price point is a reasonable upgrade.

Captain Insano 12-07-2012 03:17 AM

Look at cold cranking amps of stock battery and try to get a lightweight that matches if you drive car daily especially in cold season.

For people doing this with the lithium ion batteries can you post back after running these in cold weather?

I don't run mine in cold weather. Just like my race/summer performance tires, my lightweight lithium and AGM batteries come inside for the winter.

Captain Insano 12-07-2012 09:53 AM

I see. I will probably run a Deka year round (Braille is rebranded Deka). I ran the ETX30L on my 4.2L V8 Audi with no problem through winters. I've also run the 11.0 lb option on 2.5L EJ257 STi engines and 2.0L EJ205 WRX engines.

For the 2.0L F4 in this car probably will get the 15.5 lb option. Half the weight of the OEM beattery still with 310 CCA (OEM 390 CCA I think).

I have a friend who lives in North Toronto and runs this battery just fine, also the owner runs it on his BMW 5 series in Minnesota with no issues during the winter.

i'm still waiting for this...
